Notes for Edward James Duncan:
Edward James Duncan, known locally as "Mr. Ed", was an integral part of the growth and success of Alexander City. An innate businessman, he founded Duncan's Furniture Store and Funeral Parlor in 1890. Generations of families in Alexander City and surrounding areas traded at that furniture store until it closed in the 1980's. The funeral parlor had closed much earlier.

Mr. Ed learned the undertaking business from his father. Two years prior to the construction of Martin Dam, Alabama Power Company officials were faced with the major task of moving certain cemeteries that would be immersed when the water was "backed-up" to become Lake Martin. The power company asked Mr. Ed to "conduct the exhumation and removal of the bodies that would cause no offense to the living relatives. They would pay him $42 per grave plus a mileage fee for the distance the body wa hauled for re-interment. " "Putting 'Loafing Streams' to Work" by Harvey H. Jackson, III.

Mr. Ed's compassion and sympathy for the families more than qualified him for this unpleasant job.

'Putting Loafing Streams to Work' The building of Lay, Mitchell, Martin, and Jordan Dams, 1920-1929 by Harvey H. Jackson, III. This is the story of the human effort that went into completing one of the most complex feats of engineering in Albama history, the building of four major hydroelectric dams by the Alabama Power Company.
