Notes for J
OHN W. MACIVALE/MCINGVALE:
From the Memphis-News-Scimitar of 17 years ago, the following brief skitch was taken.

J. W. McIngvale was born in Alabama on March 9, 1850, which according to our way of figuring makes him about 62 years old. But he is a live wire just the same. You know a man is only as old as he feels, and our friend, Mac, feels like a three year old. Mr. McIngvale moved with his father and mother to the delta in Tunica County, in 1859. He is a soldier's son, and his father was killed in the battle of Shiloh. In 1869, Mr. McIngvale moved to Hernando, Miss., where he has lived since that date, with the exception of about two years in Arkansas. He is a successful dealer in general merchandise, produce, and the "News Scimitar". He entered the news business when the Morning News was first issued, and sold the first issues in Hernando. Beginning with 10 subscribers, he has gradually built up his list until he now has 53 regular customer for the News-Scimitar. Mr. McIngvale has another distinction that does not come to many men. He is the father of ten children, and the older ones are doing well in a business way. Mr. Mac believes in handling newspapers just like he does business in othre lines--"strictly on business principles." He says, "I think the News-Scimitar is the best busy man's paper."

J. W. McIngvale's father was a Confederate Soldier and was killed at the battle of Shiloh. In 1869 J. W. Moved to Hernando. He was married three times. His second wife, Jenny Wood. J. W. and Jenny had five children. Herbert Wesley was the only one to stay in Hernando.

J. W. McIngvale is buried in the Hernando Cemetery, Hernando, MS in the Johnson plots. His first wife Louisa S. Johnson is buried in the Johnson plots. Her marker says, Louisa S., wife of J. W. McIngvale, died Nov. 11, 1877 - Age 19 years.
