From: MARGARET.A.KAROL@sargentlundy.com Hi Ali, Thanks for contacting me. Susan is correct I do have a great deal of information on Jacob Jennings Deems - he is my great great grandfather. I happen to have a copy of a "Deems" family history which was prepared by one of his daughters. I have transcribed that document and am attaching it to this e-mail. There are some errors in the document, but for the most part - it gives you a really good starting place to document the data provided. In the "Deems Family history" I am the Margaret Ann Connelly, listed as daughter of Margaret Louise Merchant and Charles Vincent Connelly. Of course I have a lot of data on my particular line which I will be happy to provide. I am fixing my FTM database because I had confused Jacob Jennings' father as the Jacob, son of Johannes and then just couldn't figure out why everything was just right! Susan send me a report prepared by _______(the name escapes just now -isn't that awful!) which helped me to see where I had gone wrong. So I am in the processes of inputting my questions/data in that report - then I will send to the author asking for comments. I have attached that file also -BUT PLEASE IT IS JUST A ROUGH DRAFT _ DON"T USE IT AS GOSPEL. Maybe you can review that file and make any additions or corrections. When I get my thoughts and facts together then I will fix my database and will be glad to send you a report. Thanks so much for contacting me, I look forward to working with you. Peggy 10-1-2002 Hi Margaret, Thank you so much for replying. I have a copy of the originals of the document {Deems Jacob and Louisa Family.doc} you sent me. I got it from my Grandmother Doris Jean Monroe Farrell daughter of Oliver Perry Monroe and Grace Andrews Graham {Clara Graham Jeambly's Sister}. Thank you so much for typing it all its so much easier to read than my faded grey typewriter copy and now I can print a copy large enough for my mom and grandma to read so they can help make corrections and additions. I am printing the version you sent and will compare it with my copy to make sure we both have it all. I also have the Graham side{Grace and Clara's Father's} Clara wrote. I can make copies and send it to you snail mail if you would like a copy of it. I'm also printing the {Jacob_J._Deems__Long_PK_add_10_4_02.rtf} {it opened with word}so I can see if I have the same information as you do and know what to send you as additions. I'm also still in the never-ending:) process of adding people to my Family Tree File. Which program do you use? Right now I only have Family Tree Maker 4.4. Which uses gedcom files. Which one of Jacob Jennings children is your great grandparent? I haven't found your name yet.. I will have more time to look at all this information this weekend. I look forward to working with you also, Thanks So much, Ali Tue, 22 Oct 2002 16:45:26 -0500 Hi Ali, I have family treemaker 10.0 so I am not sure if the 4.4 level can read data from the 10.0 level. I will look in my manual to see if it says anything about that. I would like very much to have the Graham side of the story also. I would be happy to pay for copying and mailing costs. Did I give you my address? Peggy Karol 547 W. Madison Lombard, IL 60148 My Jacob Jennings line is as follows: Jacob Jennings m. Louisa Arnold Deborah Anna Deems m. I. Ora Townsend Margaret Louise Townsend m. Temple Orvel Merchant Margaret Louise Merchant m. Charles Vincent Connelly Margaret Ann (Peggy) Connelly m. Wayne John Karol = ME! As I said before I know there are mistakes in the Deems family history - but I admire Clara for undertaking to do it - what a great document for us to have. I know I have a copy of the ME Church anniversary story somewhere - there is some stories of Jacob's contributions to the Church, Doane's College, etc. Someday - I will transcribe that also! There is so much data and so little time! If I remember correctly, Jacob donated land to start Doane's college, so hopefully his kids got to attend tuition free. I did contact someone at Doane's College who looked up the years my Grandmother attended and what she studied. Then she referred me to another person. I have pasted in those e-mails ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Here is the e-mail I received from Doanes College: 12-18-00 Peggy, Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I was able to check our database and find out that Margaret Louise Townsend Merchant attended Doane starting in 1905, and either attended all or part of two years. She was a music and a special student, which means she was in a music program here and took some classes but may not have been degree seeking. She did not graduate. The last address we had on file for her was Denver. I am not a genealogist, nor do I profess to know much about the system of gathering information, but I will forward your message to Janet Jeffries, who works in our office, and is much more knowledgeable on this type of thing and see what advice she has. She also is a bit of an historian for the college and may have some answers for you as well. Thank you for your inquiry and we will see what is available. Karen Morris Director of Alumni Affairs Doane College 1014 Boswell Crete, NE 68333 402-826-8258 Then I heard from Janet. Here is her address JJeffries@doane.edu Here are her e-mails 12-18-2000 Hi Peggy, Karen Morris forwarded your questions about Deems family information to me for reply. I do "know your family!" In fact I grew up on an acreage that adjoined the old Deems homestead. What information do you have? Census? Obituaries? I think I have all of these things at home in my Crete history files. I worked for a long time at the Nebraska State Historical Society in the Preservation Dept. We worked with the National Register program, local history project around the state, etc. I researched the Deems family when we located a walnut log cabin on the banks of Walnut Creek on section 26 Crete Precinct. I also have some info on them from our local Methodist history, since the first Methodist services were held in this cabin. The cabin was torn down in the last 10 years. I took slides of it going down that I use in one of my architectural shows. I will check at home tonight and see what I have. I will be glad to send copies to you. 1-03-01 Hi Peggy, Thank you for the great information. I will gather up what I have and send it to you. I think I have an obituary for Isaac Goodin. Do you have that? I will have to check. It might take me awhile. The church Jacob Deems founded was the Grace Methodist Church -- not Lutheran. I will get you some church history. That is my church. I will be in touch! Janet And that was the last I heard, even though I did send a couple of follow-up e-mails. As far as the file I sent (Jacob_J_Deems_long etc.) I am continuing to add to that before I "cut and paste" into my FTM file. So any help would be appreciated. I have a lot more data that needs to be transcribed. But then don't we all!
