 Includes NotesNotes for James GILMORE:
A letter written by Rachel Gilmore, a granddaughter of James Gilmore and the daughter of Andrew Gilmore and Jane Work Gilmore. She was born October 20, 1820. The following is an excerpt from a letter written January 10, 1905.
" My father never was in Ireland. My grandfather came to America in 1771 and settled in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He sent back to Ireland for his two sisters and brought them to America. He Married Jane Robinson. To them five children were born. He married Rachel Black for his second wife and to them two children were born. He moved to Washington County , Pa. about 1790 and settled on a farm of four hundred acres near the town of Washington and went into the business of breeding merino sheep and made a success of it as he did with nything he undertook. My father was not much of a money maker--he was too good hearted. The Gilmores and Works as far back as I know anything of them, were Presbyterians. I do not think there is much chance of your getting information about your forefathers. The second and third generation are dead except for myself and I am in my 83rd year. I would like to see you."
The sisters for whom James Gilmore sent back to Scotland were Elizabeth and Ann. Elizabeth became acquainted with a man by the name of Berry. He enlisted in the army on landing. The Gilmore sisters enlisted as nurses. This was too mild for Elizabeth and she enlisted as a soldier during the Revolutionary War. Over on Robinsons Run in Washington County, Pa., the D.A.R. erected a monument to the memory of Elizabeth Gilmore Berry. She married John Berry in 1780. Ann Gilmore married a soldier, Hugh Boyle.
This excerpt is taken from a Geneology of the Gilmore and Massie families which was compiled by Dr. George H. Gilmore, Harry T. Massie and Dr. John E. Gilmore.
