James Robinson Gilmore (son of Andrew Gilmore and Jane Work) was born 1811 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died July 27, 1893 in Weeping Water, Nebraska. He married (1) Catherine WALKER on 1831 in Highland, Ohio. He married (2) Elma Johnson on October 2, 1850, daughter of David Johnson and Annie McCoy.

On the first day of November, 1861, James Robinson Gilmore volunteered his services for three years in the Civil War. He was enlisted in Company E, 70th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, under the command of Captain Wilson. He was engaged in the battle of Shiloh and fought with his company on the 5th, 6th and 7th of April 1862. He was disabled in the Battle of Shiloh and from that date he acted as assistant to the surgeon on bone injuries and fractures. On the 23rd of December, 1862 he was discharged, on account of disability and returned to his family. His first son born after his return from the army, was named Wilson Gilmore in honor of his captain-Captain Wilson.

The service record of this family is outstanding, having four sons and two sons-in-law in the service of the Union.

In 1863, he moved with his family to Wilshire, Indiana, and in 1866 he returned to Ohio. From there, he moved with his family, in the Spring of 1869 to Cass County, Nebraska and located on a farm one mile South East of the present town of Weeping Water, Nebraska.

For many years he was elected as Justice of the Peace for Weeping Water Precinct; numerous legal actions, including railroad litigations, were settle in his court. Many of those wishing to join in the holy bonds of wedlock came to his door. They were admitted and the ceremony performed.

In 1883 he purchased the East half of the North East quarter of Section 28 in Mt. Pleasant Precinct, Cass County, Nebraska.

On July 27, 1893, while visiting in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Cox, he suddenly passed away from heart failure at the age of 81 years. His wife Elma Johnson Gilmore, followed his in death on January 6, 1906, at her home in Mt. Pleasant precinct. Both are at rest in Oak Hill Cemetary overlooking the village of Weeping Water.
