Notes for Matthew Mead: Matthew Mead was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Revolution. He enlisted in 1755 as a private in the French and Indian War. In 1758 he was Quartermaster of the 4th Regiment in the expedition against Crown Point and Ticonderoga. In 1773 he was commissioned Captain of the Wilton company in the Norwalk, Connecticut Militia. At the outbreak of the Revolution he was commissioned Captain of the 5th Regiment of Connecticut, Continental Line. In 1777 he was made Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Regiment. In that year he was in the Battleof Germantown, Philadelphia. He commanded the 8th Regiment of Connecticut, Continental Line, at Valley Forge. |

Notes for John Mead: John Mead was commissioned Lieutenant of the West Company of Greenwich in 1757, Captain in 1767, and Major in the 9th Regiment in 1774. He was a Brigadier General during the Revolution. He served during the Battle of Long Island in August 1776 and had command of the last troops leaving New York. Later that year he fought at the Battle of White Plains, on Oct. 28, 1776. General Mead was short but very stout. There is a story that his tailor made him a vest and, as an experiment, buttoned it around himself and four other men. John was a member of the Connecticut Legislature for 20 years from 1768 until 1788 |
