Descendants of Velox Cuntz

Generation No. 16

34. Sarah16 Kuntz (JohnJacob15, JohnBernhard14, JohnJacob13, JohnGeorge12, Anstett11, Michael10 Cuntz, Sebastian9, Cuntz8, Hensel7, Hans6 Cuntzen, Schultheiss5 Cuntzel, Schulthiss4 Cuntz, Cuntz3, Cuntz2, Velox1) died June 02, 1876. She married Charles Steward, son of Robert Steward and Marie Kleppinger. He was born in Pennsylvania, and died September 02, 1884 in Amanda Township, OH..

Notes for Sarah Kuntz:
The Kuntz family was also prominent in Lehigh Township of Northampton County, but Sarah Kuntz has not been identified. These families are said to be the discendants of John Jacob Kuntz who was born in Niederbroun, Alsace, 19 Feb. 1692. He arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam, Holland, 9 Nov. 1738, on the ship "Charming Nancy". Many of his sons and grandsons settled in Northampton County. Two of the sons of his grandson, Peter Kuntz a miller, married Kleppinger girls. Henry Kleppinger married Elizabeth Kuntz, and Elias Kleppinger married Elizabeth's sister, Sybilla Kuntz. (See probate record of Peter Kuntz 1846.)
Sarah (Kuntz) Steward died 2 june, 1876, and Charles Steward on 2 Sept. 1884. They are buried in the Dutch Hollow Cemetary almost in view of their home. Beside them are buried tow of their grandchildren who died in infancy: Sarah Minerva Steward who died 9 Sept. 1876 at the age of two months (daughter of James Milton Steward and Amelia Dunnick Steward); and Charles G. O. Riegle who died 19 April, 1879, age two months and eighteen days. He was the son of Thomas Riegle and Susannah C. Steward Riegle.

Notes for Charles Steward:
The census records are confusing. The index for 1830 lists 16 Charles Stewards (and Stewarts) in as many counties in Pennsylvania. The size of none of these families seem to reflect the know children and their ages. The closest fit seems to be Charles Stuard, Lynn Twp., Lehigh County (page 144) 1M 10/15; 1M 30/40; 1F under 5; 2F 20/30. Accessibility for Robert Steward in 1830 (page 107) in Lehigh Twp., Northampton County is 1M 20/30; 1M 60/70; 1F 15/20; 1F 20/30; 1F 50/60. Much more information and proof is needed to locate and identify the members of these families and to find Sarah Kuntz. It is hoped that some Steward family memebers will have clues to aid in this search. It is rumored that Florence Steward Pollard did some research on this a number of years ago. She died in Fort Worth, Texas in the summer of 1957. The children of her closest sister, Effie Steward Herrnstein, who lived and died in Circleville, Ohio, have been unable to find any of the records. Any such information will be most welcome.

CHARLES AND SARAH STEWARD IN OHIO: Charles Steward was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio in 1836, locating first in Washington Township in Pickaway County, and coming from there to Clear Creek Township, Fairfield County and then to Amanda Township, where his death occurred, his burial being in Duthc Hollow Cemetary. He married Sarah Kuntz, and of the fifteen children born to this union, four died in infancy......Lewis Wilson Steward...of Amanda Township was born in Clear Creek Township November 14,1837, and is the son of Charles Steward and a grandson of Robert Steward, who was of Scotch-Irish descent. This quotation from C. C. Miller's History of Fairfield County, Ohio, Arnold Publishing Co., Chicago, 1912 (p. 621) is all that is presently known of the Steward family move from Pennsylvania.
On April 9, 1838, Charles Steward purchased about 100 acres of land from Levi Grover and his wife Cassia. This deed, recorded in the Lancaster, Ohio, Court House (Deed Book 4, p. 44) describes this as part of Section 33, Township 13 (Amanda), Range 20 in Fairfield County. The Stewards lived the rest of their lives on this farm. Five more children were born on this farm. In 1885, after the death of Charles Steward, Lewis Wilson Steward purchased it from the rest of the heirs. (See Deed Book #58, pages 7-9). It is said that Charles Steward and his sons made the bricks and built the house which is about one-half mile north east of the Dutch Hollow Church. The long lane to it leads from State Route 22 (Lancaster-Circleville Pike). The house is still there although it has been altered after severe damage from a tornado in 1959. The barn was destroyed in the same storm, but from early photographs it appeared to have been a typical "Pennsylvania Dutch" barn. The farm is now owned by the Rupp family (1978). The Steward men and boys, while living here, were carpenters and cabinet makers as well as farmers.
The area in this rolling creek valley was know as "Dutch Hollow"; and was so named from the preponderance of German families who came from Pennsylvania (often via Maryland) to settle there about the time that the State of Ohio was formed in 1803. All of the land in Fairfield County, which was larger than it is now, was sold by the Federal government in land patents fromthe Land Office in Chillicothe. The Lancaster-Circleville Pike is also the township line between Amanda and Clear Creek Townships in Dutch Hollow. This road was a part of Zane's Trace from Wheeling to Chillicothe.
In October, 1812, Israel's Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Church was begun in Dutch Hollow. The first log building was built on the north side of the road and was used as both school and church. For many years the program of both the school and church was conducted in the German language. In 1846 a new chruch building was erected across the road on the site of the present church. (The Church is still in operation, and has services every Sunday.) as of 1978. Beside this building is the "old" cemetary, and the New Cemetary occupies the original site. Thus, there are two Dutch Hollow cemetaries in differnt townships. The Steward family became active members of this church and the records contain many entries of births, baptisms and confirmations. I have been able to locate and photograph the grave stones of twelve members of the Steward family who have been buried in the "new" cemetary during the past one hundred years.
This farming community of Dutch Hollow was not an incorporated town, but the people of the area met at the church and school. Thus the usual intermarriage of the neighboring families took place. Early atlases (1866 and 1871) show that the names of the Steward spouses were from farms within a few miles. These include such names as Christy, Doner, Nigh (Nye), Zehrung, Bauman, Riegle, and Dunnick. Some of these families were among the earliest settlers in the area.

After the death of her mother, Sarah E. Steward lived on the old home farm taking care of her father. After his death in 1884, and the sale of the farm to her brother, Lewis Wilson Steward, she purchased a home at the bottom of Dutch Hollow and lived there until her death. She later took in her niece, Abigail Riegle, and "raised" her until her marriage to Owen T. Hobson in 1908.
