James Wesley Keen was born before the Civil War on Nov. 3, 1859, in Charlton Co., GA, son of David Myre and Nancy Walker Keen. (Keen was spelled "Keene" in the family Bible of David Myre and Nancy Walker Keen. James's father, David Myre Keen, was killed in the Civil War. James had to go to work at an early agg to help support his family, He went to work on the railroad for 23 cents a day. James Wesley Keen married Charity Mary Jane Tanner, born Jan. 1, 1856, daughter of John "Josh" Tanner and Eliza Bradley Tanner, and they had 14 children. He made his living as a farmer and a timberman.
