Notes for Sarah Gist: "My family researcher placed Sarah Gist and husband John Kennedy in Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania and later in Wilkes Co. or Orange Co. North Carolina, on the Yadkin River area. John was believed to be a longhunter and one of Lowry's Indian Traders. (Lowry being stationed out of Pennsylvania.) John may have had a son named Andrew Kennedy, and Andrew may have had a daughter named Margaret. The Kennedy name may have been spelled Cannaday or Canady or a similar spelling in North Carolina. Andrew's mother could have been Indian, and Margaret's mother was believed Indian. It was common for Indian traders to take Indian wives on the side, in addition to their white wives. Margaret Canady is believed to have married William Hitchcock Taulbee, who then settled in Breathitt County, Kentucky, establishing the Kentucky Taulbees. William Hitchcock Taulbee was born in Wilkes or Orange Co. North Carolina. Has anyone come across any information on this Sarah Gist line which the Dorseys left as unknown? Have you seen any references in any other Gist or Canady sources or in your family trees? The Indian blood in my family tree has been consistent through oral histories from all branches of my family. The family researcher who was working on this line had two proofs connecting Margaret Canady to Sarah Gist thru John Kennedy, but he died before giving me those proofs. Any assistance would be greatly apreciated. Sincerely, Pamela Patrick pj-shannon@erinet.com |
