Notes for GEORGE MOOD:
WAR RECORD OF GEORGE AND JOHN MOOD

The following account was given to Virgil Mood and Troy Mood by Captain John D. Alexander of Springfield, Indiana, in 1930, when he was 91 years old:

George Mood enlisted in Company E, 97th Indiana Regiment on August 18, 1862 at Solsberry, Indiana. His brother, John, enlisted the dame day. It was a nice bright day and the Drum and Bugle Corps was out drumming up volunteers. A large crowd was present and excitement was high. These boys enlisted under Captain James T. Oliphant, now buried in Bloomington.

George was killed at Rasacca, Georgia on May 14, 1864. He was on the skirmish line and he lay all day in the hot sun before they were able to get to his body, which was brought in late that night. Coen Cullison was killed the same day and buried in the same grave. They were wrapped in their blankets, laid side by side, covered with pine boughs and covered with dirt some four or five feet deep.

John help to bury George. The boys were together when George was killed.

John was killed at Columbia, South Carolina, on February 16, 1865, on the return trip from Savannah to Washington. They had been following the Confederates all day. They stopped at Congree Creek at the bridge which was the sight of the Confederate Fort at Columbia. The Confederates were shelling the Union lines. Most of the Union soldiers had run behind the breastworks which they had just built. John was standing outside the breastworks when he was killed with a piece of steel form an bursting shell. The shell cut his spine completely in two. Preston Flynn was killed by the same shell - his head was cut clean off. John was buried right where he fell. This spot is three miles west of Columbia, South Carolina near the bridge on Congree Creek. The State Capitol Building can be seen from the spot where he was buried. John was a non-commissioned Corporal. He was a clean soldier. Both boys were good marksmen, good soldiers and always ready for duty. They never refused to go when called upon.

After teh enlistment at Solsberry, the boys went into the camp at Camp Dick Thompson near Terre Haute. They drilled there until September 20th when they were mustered into the service of the U.S. Army. From here they went to Camp Morton at Indianapolis. They were then sent to Louisvill and then to Kentucky. They came back to Louisville, from there to Memphis; Memphis to Oxford, Mississippi; Oxford to LaGrange, Tennessee; then back to Memphis and from Memphis to Vicksburg. They fought Johnston's Army at Jackson, Mississippi; then back to Vicksburg; back to Memphis and then to Chattanooga on foot. At Chattanooga they fought on Missionary Ridge form November 25th to December 1st when they were ordered to East Tennessee; to Knoxville; then back to Chattanooga on foot and from there went to Scottsburough, Alabama, where they were in winter quarters from December to March, 1864. The first of May they went on the Atlantic Campaign. From Scottsburough they came back to Chattanooga on foot. It was this trip north that George was killed thirty miles south of Chattanooga.
