Aunt Emma was twelve when her mother was born. Mother says that Emma took care of her, combed her hair, made her clothes, and dressed her. I'm sure that this was not an easy job because my mother was a little live wire who would get frequent spankings for not doing what she was told. She was the baby of the family and I suspect she may have been just a bit spoiled by the seven older sisters and brothers.
Aunt Emma and her husband Edgar Romaine moved to Los Angeles in the Forties, mother followed in 1944. When I was a little girl they lived in a little house on Saint Andrews Place. Aunt Emma was a very good seamstress. When Diane and I were little she made us long off-the-shoulder dresses. She taught me how to sew a skill that proved to be very valuable. I made all of me clothes in high school including my prom dress and when my daughter was little I made all of her clothes.
Aunt Emma and Uncle Edgar never had children who lived. Mother told me about three children who died at birth. It's too bad because she loved children and I think she would have made a very good mother.
