His widow, Ann (Downman) Peachey Downman, also left will (ca 1801) naming his daughters as such. Does anyone know their mother's name? Left as wards of John McRae of Petersburg, VA, the two DOWNMAN girls later assign title "mother" to Violet ( ?) Claiborne Bates, who probably was their foster-mother and may have been a McRae. Was she really their mother? |
