Joshua bap. 5 Nov 1630 (Crewkerne Eng) d. young George was a "surveyor, Indian trader, magistrate, statesman and founder of a prominent branch of the Hull family in America". (Weygant). Apparently he descended from an educated family as his brothers, Joseph and William both graduated from St. Mary's Hall at Oxford and were ministers of the Church of England. Further evidence of his background is gleaned from the fact that his wife was the daughter of a "well-to-do yeoman of Stockland" (Ibid) in Dorsetshire. George sailed for the American colonies from Plymouth 30 Mar 1629 / 30 on the Mary and John; his youngest son, Joshua was baptised at Crewkerne 7 months after this date, indicating that Thomasene and the young family were left in England while George became part of the "Great Migration". He shared the voyage with friends including George and John Ludlow and future son-in-law Humphrie Pinney. He was a short time in Boston and went on to help settle the town of Dorchester where he was on the first board of selectmen and was made a freeman 4 Mar 1632/3 and was the town's first representative to the General Court. In 1636 he moved to Windsor Connecticut where he surveyed both Windsor and Wethersfield. In exchange for this service, he received his choice of homelots in Windsor where he again represented his town in the General Court. It was here in 1638 that he and Pinney, through the graces of the General Court, received a monopoly on the beaver trade on the Connecticut River. In 1638 he followed his friend George Ludlow, now governor of Connecticut, to Fairfield where he became the General Court designated assistant to the governor. In 1651, '53, '54 he was appointed by the governor as associate magistrate for the towns by the seaside. He was apparently well connected on the political scene of the blossoming colonies; Cotton Mather mentions him as does Connecticut state historian Trumbull who groups him "with those whose names are worthy of perpetuation". Stiles, too says that he was "a citizen of worth and distinction." From what was there and from the sources listed below, we know that he came to Windsor with his father and brother-in-law, Humphrey PINNEY in 1637. He was a defendant in a lawsuit there in 1645 and served on the Grand Jury 16 July 1660 as well as deputy to the General Court in 1659, 1660 and 1662. He was a member of the church in Windsor where, on 18 July 1659 he is recorded as having paid 6 shillings for a seat in the Meeting House; he sold this seat on 7 Mar 1664 after his move to Killingworth. He moved to Killingworth in 1663 as a proprietor of the new plantation which was originally called Hammonascett. As a prelude to the establishment of the new community, the General Court in March 1663 issued the following grant: "Wm Wadsworth, Ens. Avery and Lnt Smith a committee to view the lands at Homonoscitt and, if they judg be not fitt for a plantation, and will not be very prejudiciall to Say Brook, then they are to lay it out to Mr. Math: Allyn, Cap't Tallcott, John Allyn and Mr. Willis and according to the grant of the court, but if it be prejudicial to Say Brook they are to lay out what they judge right to the town of Say Brook and the rest to Mr. Matthew Allyn, Cap't Talcott, Mr. Willys, Mr. Joseph Haynes or Mr. Daniell Clerk." On 3 Jun 1663 the surveying committee reported that the area would be a "comfortable plantation" for thirty families to "subsist comfortably". Accordingly, the General Court, in Oct 1663 issued an order for the settlement of the area that was to become Killingworth. The order required that at least 30 families be settled in the plantation by 1665 and that they stay for at least 4 years. The original planters were Bryan Rossiter, Josiah HULL, sen'r, John Clow, sen'r*, Jonas Westover, William Huydon, Simon Mills*, John Clow jur.*, Josiah Gibberd*, Edward Griswold, William Kelsey, Josiah Ellsworth*, William Barber, John Meigs, senr John Stedman*, Samuel Buell, Matthew Berquett*, John Skinner*, William Wellman, Robert Howard*, Richard Warkley. {* = never settled in Killingworth, bold = ancestor of Jana Wellman Ulrich; hyperlink added where possible.} The Killingworth town records indicate that lots were laid out in accordance with the requirements of the settlement order. These "homelots" were on what is now Main Street of Clinton CT and were allotted to Thomas Smith; William Barber; John Meggs; William Kelcey; Mr. John Woodbridge; Josiah Rositer; Henry Franham; William Wellman; George Chatfield; Thomas Stevens; Edward Griswold; William Huyton; Samuel Buell; John Kelcey; Robert Williams, granted; John Bettleton, granted; Annanais Turney, purchase; John Rositer, by agreement; John Meiggs, granted; John Shether, purchase of Jonathan Dunnin; George Sanders, granted; William Stevens; Josiah Hull senr; Eliezer Isbel, granted; Isaac Griswold, purchase; Jonathan Dunin Josiah Hull was the first town recorder of Killingworth, serving in this capacity from 2 Oct 1665 to 5 Nov 1675. One of his official duties included proving the will William Wellman; Josias also witnessed this document. He was Lieutenant of the Train Band (1666) and was again elected to serve as deputy to the General Court in 1667 and 1674. His homelot in Killingworth was on the north side of what is now Main Street, west of Indian River in what is now Clinton CT. A map of the original plantation shows the original land allocations as follows: East of the Indian River, south of the "Swamp", north side of turnpike and moving west in order: John Hodge, Henry Crowe, Matthew Allen, John Rossiter, Lower Green, Wm Kelsey, Jonathan Deming, Parsonage South side of turnpike moving west in order: John Vettleton, Rot't Williams, John Kelsey, Thos. He was born May 24, 1832 in Harrison Co., Ohio813,814,815, and died March 31, 1891 in Shell Rock Twp., Freeborne Co., MN816,817,818. Notes for BENJAMIN ROBINSON: Benjamin's obituary written by Jesse Charles Robinson both sons of Aaron Robinson. Mr. Benjamin Robinson died in Shell Rock, Freeborn Co. MN March 31st 1891 aged nearly 61 years. Our brother was born May 27, 1832 in Harrison Co. Ohio. In the spring of 1839 we moved to Athens County Ohio and settled in the forests with scarcely a tree missing from the vast forest around us. Here the log cabin was built and a small opening made in the forest. But a sad accident removed father from us just when we seemed to need him most. Mother was left in this wilderness home with seven small children. Benjamin and an older brother, though mere boys, cheered by the word and deeds of their mother, went bravely to work to clear in the forest a home for us all. Thus he labored until his 19th year when he went to learn the blacksmith trade, at which he labored for a number of years. He was married to Miss Phoebe ann Williams the 23rd of August 1854, and to them were born nine childern, five of whom with his wife survive him. In the spring of 1854 he moved to Freeborn Co. and settled on the farm where he died. Here he passed through some of the hardships of apioneer's life. Twenty seven years were spent in his Minnesota home. In March 1868 he was converted, and on the 23rd day of the month he was baptized and united with the Free Baptist Church in his communityand remained a member until the church lost it's visibility. He never united with another church, but although he spent years of inactivity, he never gave up all hope. He had been in poor health for several years, and for the last few monthes was confined to the house, and suffered more than tounge can tell, but he endured as seeing him him who is invisible, often said that he was trusting in Jesus to save. The funeral services were held in the Eckert schoolhouse on April 19th by Rev I.N. English; he preached from Rev. xiv and a part of the 13th verse. His neighbors and friends followed the remains to their last resting place. He will be missed, for he was widely known; no man enjoyed company better and in his home friends knew they were always welcome. To the widow and children we would give hearty sympathy in their sad bereavement. The sad farwell has been said; the body so often rocked with pain lies quietly in the grave, but we hope to meet again where we shall be forever with the Lord. She married EDWIN FRANK WINICK May 05, 1937 in Mason City, Iowa. He was born February 10, 1908 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN, and died November 03, 1967 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara Co., CA. Notes for EDNA ELIZABETH KOOPMAN: Notes by Marilynn Munoz, daughter of Edna Elizabeth Koopman-- 11-28-99 Edna Elizabeth Koopman was born January 15, 1904. There were barelycarson the road and no a i rplanes in the sky. She lived to see all ofthatdevelop and more. She watched a man walk o n t he moon and a President(or2) assasinated. She had a very full life and was well-loved b y everyonearound her. She had many disasters in her life and many joys. Theseare afew: Edna legally changed her name to June. She hated her middle name o fElizabeth, she didn't want to be called Lizzie. She also didn't want to use the name Edna, but she did use it as a middle name. She had the nickname "Tootsie", probably from the song "In the Good Old Summertime"( or something like that). June was a very independent woman who lived as a liberated woman. She didn't know or care about women's rights. She just lived them. She ran away from home when she was about 16 and went to live in the big city(Minneapolis). She met her first husband, Perley Hasek Oliva there ( went under the alias of Livingston) and married him when she was about 18-19.Her first child ( Perley Wencel) died of a brain tumor when he was about 8 months (The record says Bronco-pneumonia, not brain tumor, but Mama always said it was a tumor). She gave birth to her second child June Pearl Oliva on October 26,1924,and her third child Gene H. Oliva on April 14, 1929. She divorced Perley when both children were quite young(another liberating event in her life ) . He had been unfaithful to her and that was something she would not tolerate. On May 5, 1937 (In Mason City, Iowa) she married the love of her life,Edwin Frank Winick . It was a match made in heavan. They were very much in love and had a very close and loving relationship all their days together. Their daughter Marilynn Jane Winick was born on May 14,1941in Minneapolis. About 4 years later they (the 3 of them) moved to Forest Lake, Minnesota where they lived until June of 1959. They moved briefly to Hood River, Oregon but finally settled in Palo Alto,California where Edwin's sister Margaret was living with her daughter Judy. They bought a little house in Palo Alto and made their little heavan on earth. On November 3, 1967 Edwin died of a massive heart attack, and the sun went out of her life . She was never the same after that. After he died she mourned for such a long time that her family had to intervene as it seemed that she was willing herself to die. In fact, 2 years later she had an operation for colon cancer, probably due to the fact that she would not eat. She survived the cancer and eventually regained her will to live. She was able to live a very full life with her daughters and son and all her grandchildren. She remodeled her home, built a room on to her house (nearly single-handed), and was able to do many, many things likethe craftswoman that she was. She loved to fish and whenever possible would do so at the drop of a hat. She could sew and crochet and knit and bake and was extremely talented and creative. After her recovery from cancer and being all alone she started traveling every summer to Minnesota and back all by herself. She did this for about 8 years. She visited every summer wit h all of her sisters, and her son Gene and all of her extended family. When she was 78 years old she had tests done and it was discovered that she had lung cancer (she had been a life-long smoker). She had the cancer removed, but the operation was much more than she should have endured (for her age), and she suffered withextreme pain for the next two years. On June 16, 1984 she died. The night before she told me she was going home to her "Daddy". She lived 80 and one half years, and is missed greatly by her family to this day. Hehadtwo sisters and thr e e brothers and he was the oldest boy. When hewasabout 13-15 years old his father deserted t h e family, or so itseemed. The family never really knew what happened. It was reported thath i sfather died under mysterious circumstances in a hotel in Sanfrancisco.Daddy once told th e s tory that one evening a year or so afterhis fatherhad disappeared he saw him looking int o th e living room windowfrom theoutside. When he noticed his father, his father turned and r an off. Thatwas the last time anyone in the family ever saw or heard from himagain. Life was not easy after his father left, and he was burdened with a lotofresponsibility . h e and his older sister Jessie had to work very hardtohelp their mother keep food in thei r mo uths and it was a family ofeight. There were times that his mother Mary had to take the t wo o rthreeyoungest children to the orphanage to live for awhile. She wouldcome andget them o u t when she had enough money again. It was somethingpoorpeople could do in those days (the d a ys of the Great Depression),and notfear giving up their children forever. She had to do i t 3 -4 timesduringthose hard years. Edwin was a very talented man. He hated working for anyone else, andreally marched to the b e at of a different drummer when it came toanoccupation. He was a real craftsman. He could bu i ld a house fromthefoundation up--all by himself. He knew how to do anything and do itwell. He waited to marry until he found his perfect match, June Edna(Oliva)Koopman. A woman wi t h a ready-made family. They were marriedApril 5,1937. He really doted on her. Anything sh e w anted she got(withinreason). He was a very affectionate man, with everyone. He wasn'tafra id to touch people and be vulnerable with them. He was a mancomfortable inhis own skin. Ther e w ere no pretensions with him and hedidn't toleratepretentiousness in others. He could real l y burst yourbubble if you wereall puffed up, and rightly so. He had a large share ofthe Wi n ick senseof humor and their laugh. You can tell a Winick laughright away-- andthey all lau g h the same. They all got it from MaryWinick--the matriarchof the family--all 4' 9" of her. Eddie was not a large man. He was 5'7" and took a man's size 7 shoe. But,he had the bigges t h eart in the world. He would do anything foranyone. If you needed help, he was right ther e t o do it. He was verygenerous atall times. After they moved to Palo Alto, California he decided not to work sohardand stopped buildi n g houses for a living and just painted them. Theveryday he died he had been working in th e m orning and then came homebecausehe didn't feel well. We all think he knew he was going t o di e. ItwasNovember 3, 1967 and he died that day of a massive heart attack. Hislossreally d eve stated his family as he was much beloved by all, especiallyJune and Marilynn. He did liv e lon g enough to see and know histwograndchildren, Michael and Robin. Robin has his cheery b lue e yes andMikehas his sense of humor. When he died he was 59 years old.
