1850 Prince William County, Va. census lists him as: age 31, M, tenant, Va. Listed in his household are:

According to a letter written by PATTIE descendant, E. R. CONNER III, Benjamin Franklin PATTIE and his wife Mary Lewis NEWMAN lived at "Rock Hall Farm" in Prince William County, Va. He was a tenant farmer and owned no land when the 1850 census was taken. It is suspected that he lived at this farm until his death.
According to this same letter, Thomas Gordon PATTIE, g.grandson of Benjamin, was told by his father that Benjamin F. PATTIE came to the Prince William County area from West Virginia before the Civil War. Before he lived in Catharpin he lived in a log cabin located in an old pine field on what later became "Bell Farm". Thomas states that the cabin had a shingle roof with holes in it through which the family could see the stars at night. This property has since been cut off from "Bell Farm" and made into a subdivision. When Benjamin lived on the property it was owned by George CHAPMAN, a wealthy miller and land owner.
