Sam Spileos Sr. of Newton Centre, a restaurateur, died Monday at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton. He was 76. Born in Boston, Mr. Spileos was raised in the South End. He moved to Newton in 1956 and resided there until his death.
He attended Boston University , graduating in 1954. After college, he and his brother founded Spileos Brothers, a construction company based in Boston that specialized in restaurant construction.
Mr. Spileos was also the founder and operator of Sam's Beef and Ale House in Boston's Theatre District. He ran and operated the restaurant with his wife and family for more than 25 years, until his retirement.
He was active for many years in the Theatre District Neighborhood Association, the Lafayette Lodge of Perfection and Mass. Consistory, the Norembega-Brookline Lodge, A.F. and A.M., the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, the George K. Menichios Post 324, the American Legion of Boston and the Aleppo Shrine in Wilmington. He was also past master of the Boston University Lodge of Masons, a former member of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association and was a 33rd-degree Mason.

Sam Spileos Sr., 76, of Newton died Sunday, May 28, 2000, in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center of cancer.
He owned and operated Sam's Beef & Ale House of the Theatre District of Boston for about 25 years until his retirement in 1990. Many performers would drop in for refreshment after a show, some awaiting reviews from the first edition of the paper.
Before opening the restaurant, he owned and operated Spileos Brothers Construction Co. with his brother, Louis.
Born in Boston, he graduated from Boston University in 1954.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Mary (Reynolds) Spileos; his daughters, Sheila A. Long of Bellingham and Pamela E. Masters of Charlestown; his sons, Robert E. Spileos of Boston and Sam Spileos Jr. of Newton; his sisters, Helen O'Niell of Braintree and Pauline Naoum of Dorchester; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Claire Callindes and Louis Spileos.
Services were held in the Chapel of the Brasco & Sons Memorial, Waltham, Thursday, June 1. A Masonic Service was held Wednesday, May 31.
Burial was in Newton Cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
