Roberts - On the Trail of Cornelius Roberts d. 1788 VA

Updated May 23, 2006

About Our Family Research

I am a direct descendant of Cornelius Roberts and his wife Mary through their daughter Mary "Polly" Roberts who married Shadrack/Shadrick Monk.

This is where I will post MY theories and documentation on the ancestors of Cornelius and Mary as I find evidence.

Taxes: Cornelius is listed on the 1767 Pittsylvania List of Tithables taken by Peter Copland/Copeland. The other Roberts listed is James. This may be his father, uncle or brother.
8 years later, there is a Joseph Roberts who is named as part of the protection of the county.

Committee for Pittsylvania county, chosen 26 January, 1775.

Crispin Shelton, [Dixon & Hunter, 11 Feb., 1775.]

Since Halifax is the parent county of Pittsylvania, I'm researching the Halifax County Robert's on documentation prior to 1766.

Friends, Neighbors, In-laws and Outlaws:

I am interested in the relationship to the families found in deed and death records: Anderson, Childress, Monk, Riddle, Dickenson and Frost.
Frost: After the death of Cornelius, Mary married Rev. John Frost. Mary's daughter Amelia married Edward Frost and this family lived in GA. (looks like step bro & step sister married)

Military:

Cornelius is shown on the Payroll in Capt. David Looney's Militia of Fincastle Co. VA (Now the State of Kentucky).

Cornelius is also listed under Capt. Herbert's Milita for "Battle of Point Pleasant" also know as "Lord Dunsmore War".

Cause of Death:

Cornelius was killed (scalped) on Black Mountain in 1788 hunting for valuable herb, ginseng, so no Rev. War. Pension file exists.
