John William Howarth (son of Richard Howarth and Nancy Unknown) was born August 10, 1809 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England25, and died August 08, 1889 in Lewiston, Fulton County, Illinois25. He married Alice Ann Abbott on July 14, 1834 in Blackburn, England25, daughter of William Thomas Abbott and Nancy Holden.

John Howarth and his eldest son, William came to America i n 1842. On
September 3, 1842 he bought 80 acres of unimproved land in Lynchb urg
Township from the government at a cost of $1.25 per acre. John and his
son returned to England to bring the rest of the family to this country.
For u nknown reasons, they did not return until 1847. Upon his return,
John buil t the first house on Fairview Lane in Lynchburg Township which
later became k n o w as the Fairfiew Farm. On June 14 and June 20 of 1855,
John added two addi ti onal 40 acre tracts to his holdings. He gave the
property to his son Will i am who purchased an additional 80 acres on
December 29, 1864. William late r r ga ve his 320 acres of land to his
daughter Amy who married Jim Warren. Ji m W arr en built a large home on
the
property just north/west of the Fairview C hur ch. Amy left the property
to her daughter Elsie Warren Houseworth who l at e r sol d it to Roy
Fletcher
and his wife Marion (Warren) Fletcher. Harol d Bank s and Elsie Fletcher
Banks lived in the house from the late 1930's unti l the e arly 1950's
where their children were raised. The house is presently ow ned b y Roy
and Marion's son Norman Fletcher and is still referred to as th e " old
Warren place."
The first three children of John and Alice died in the ir i nfan cy in
England. Two daughters perished in fires in Lynchburg after t he fa mily
had settled in the United States.
In the 1850 census, Joseph Howar th, ag e 2 5 , was living with John and
Alice. It is likely that Joseph and J ohn wer e br o thers . Nothing more
has been found on Joseph Howarth. Howeve r, in th e Hist ory of Washington
County, Pennsylvania mention was made of a " Soldier's Monum ent be ing
erected in the Washington Cemetery, borough of Wash ington wi th the name
o f "Joseph Howarth of Washington, Pa."
In the census o f July 19, 1870, the peop le listed as living in the John
Howarth home were Jo hn 59, wif e Alice 59, Geor ge O'Leary 25, his wife
Nancy 21, Alice O'Leary 7 months, Cha rles Fl etcher 5, John W Fletcher 4,
Minnie Fletcher 1, Douglas Mc Ghee 26 and his wif e Elizabe th 17.
John William died in 1889 while visiting his daughter Elizab et h and he r
husband Douglas McGhee near Bushnell, in Ful ton County, Illinois
