Researched by Joseph Moore, Compiled 26 March 1997..................................................................... ................................ (Updated August 01, 2002) ELIAS S. NORTON (full name believed to be Elias Stanley Norton, see later), died 1845-49. It is presently thought that he was a son of William G. and Celia Norton of Fayette County. Elias S. Norton married in Fayette County, 13 September 1839, Miletta (or Malidda) Hearn. The William G. Norton household in the 1840 Census included a male age 20-30, born 1810-20, a female age 15-20, born 1820-25, and a female age under 5, born 1835-40, aside from William G. Norton himself and his wife Celia. (The household also contained a lady whose age was given as over 100; she is not presently identified.) It is the writer's present belief that this group consisted of Elias S. Norton, his young wife Miletta Hearn, and an infant daughter who evidently died as she is not found in the 1850 Census. Elias S. Norton was deceased by 1850 and his wife Miletta (given as Malidd Norton) was by then head of the family. Four children were born to Elias S. Norton and Miletta Hearn, based on the 1840 Census household of Willaim G. Norton and as listed in the 1850 Fayette County Census household (948) of the widow "Malidd" Norton: (1) Daughter, born by 1840 Census, evidently died by 1850. (2) William E. Norton, born c. 1840 (age 10 in 1850 Fayette County Census, age 20 in 1860 Clayton County Census, age 29 in 1880 Clayton County Census). He married in Clayton County, Georgia, 1 September 1861, Malissa A. Allums, and was living in the 1870 Clayton County Census in household 892, and in 1880 in Clayton County Census household 48. (Household 49 was that of his mother "Malattie" Long; household 50 was that of his brother-in-law and sister James M. and "Cealie" A. Henderson, who had living with them her sons Green Norton, age 18, and Elias Norton, age 16.) (3) Celia Ann Norton, born c. 1842 (age 8 in 1850 Census), married in Fayette County, 19 December 1858, her cousin Winslow ("Windsor") G. Norton, see below He was killed in Confederate service in 1864 and she married second, 15 December 1867, James M. Henderson, and lived thereafter in Clayton County, Georgia. See her Norton children listed below under Winslow G. Norton. (4) Martha Norton, born c. 1845 (age 5 in 1850 Census), not listed in the 1860 Census with her mother and step-father Marcus Long, whereby it appears that she was deceased by 1860. Miletta (Hearn) Norton married second in Fayette County, 28 December 1851, Marcus M. Long, and thereafter lived in neighboring Clayton County, Georgia, where the Marcus Long farmhouse northwest of Jonesboro was an important landmark to the Union army during the 1864 Battle of Jonesboro. Miletta Hearn and Marcus Long had several children of their own; by 1870 she was again a widow. Norton, called Windsor, was born c. 1820 (1860 Census) or c. 1823 (1850 Census), and was killed in the fight at Griswoldville, Georgia, 21 November 1864. He married first in Fayette County, 22 December 1842, Manerva Measles (her last name is doubtful as no one else by that name appears in any Fayette County records; "Measles" is thought to be a clerk's error and her correct name is unknown), and second in Fayette County, 19 December 1858, Celey (Celia) Ann Norton, born c 1842, daughter of Elias S. Norton and his wife Miletta Hearn, see above. Celia Ann Norton married second, 15 September 1867, James M. Henderson, and thereafter lived in neighboring Clayton County, Georgia). Winslow Norton and his first wife Manerva had two children: (1) William H. Norton, born 1843/4, private in the Bethsaida Rifle Guards, Company E, 27th Georgia Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia, 9 August 1861. (2) James B. Joseph Norton, born 1844-49, as James B. J. Norton he married 6 September 1860, E. M. Yates of Fayette County (his extremely young age at marriage, apparently sixteen at the oldest, suggests possible errors in his census ages, which are inconsistent). Winslow Norton and his second wife, who was his cousin Celia Ann Norton, daughter of Elias S. and Miletta (Hearn) Norton and believed grand-daughter of William G. and Celia Norton, had three children: (1) Manerva (Nerva) Norton, born c. 1860. (2) household in the Clayton County, 11 Georgia, Censuses of 1870 and 1880. Green Norton, born c. 1862. (3) Elias Stanley Norton, born c. 1864 (believed named for his maternal grandfather Elias S. Norton), married 1 February 1891, Fayette County, Mentory Cook. He married CASSAFIRA BROWN November 19, 1837 in Fayette County, Georgia. She was born 1818 in Georgia, and died 1873 in Fayette County, Georgia. Notes for NAZARETH NORTON: NORTON FAMILY CEMETERY, FAYETT COUNTY GEORGIA. Georgia Genealogical Society Quarterly in 1976, Vol. 12, No. 3). "The exact number of graves in this cemetery cannot be determined, since the area is heavily wooded. There are no headstones or grave markers, but it appears there are from ten to fifteen graves. Known to be buried in this cemetery is an Eason child, who died at the age of two years (sometime in the 1880's), and who died quite suddenly of an unknown cause. Later the mother missed a gold thimble, which had been in her family for quite a while, and it was believed the child may have swallowed the thimble and choked to death. A sister of the Eason child, Mrs. Nonie Banks, is still living in the Fayetteville area. Also buried in this cemetery were Polly and Nazor Norton, who were related by marriage to the mother of Mrs. Bessie Roberts (Fannie Mae Jackson) The spelling of Nazor is not certain. The Norton's daughter, Celie, married Bill Jackson, who was a half brother of Fannie Mae Jackson. Bill and Celie Jackson lived on the property now owned by Mr. Johnson which was known as the Spring Place until some time around 1886, when they moved to Louisiana with their two children, Dave and Mollie. Mrs. Roberts has a letter which has been written to her father from a Mollie Crain, believed to be the daughter of Mollie above, which was postmarked 'Ida, Louisiana' about 1918. Fannie Mae Jackson married J H Neely, who had lived with the Bill Jackson family on the Spring Place before they moved to Louisiana. J H Neely bought the property later in 1892 and owned it until he died in 1926. At his death, his property went to his widow, Fannie. Bill Jackson also had a brother, Dave Jackson, who lived in the area until 1879 when he moved to Alabama with his wife, Lissie and one year old daughter, Minnie in a one horse wagon. Fannie Jackson visited him for the first time after the move 48 years later, in 1927, after her husband died. Another brother of Fannie Jackson, J. M. Jackson (wife Mignon) was a commissioner in Morgan County, Alabama in the early 1920's. His daughter, Hessie died at age 17 after giving birth to a little baby girl, which also died three days after birth. They were buried in Cedar Creek Cemetery in Alabama. Hessie's husband, Buell Gordon, died at age 25 of tuberculosis, which he contracted while he was serving in the Phillipine Island area." The directions for the Norton Family Cemetery are as follows - Hwy 85 N to Hwy 314 N. Cemetery on right 2.2 miles. This is .2 miles from Roberts Road and is at 541 Hwy 314. Nazareth, his wife Cazzyfair, and their daughter Martha Jane Norton wer members of the Baptist church in Fayetteville from July 1851 to 18, September 1868 (The Armchair Rescarcher, as previously cited). They are undoubtedly, buried in the Norton Family Cemetery north of Fayetteville. NOTES ON SOME NORTON ESTATES AND FAMILIES IN FAYETTE COUNTY, GEORGIA.
