Generation No. 1

      1. Ole1 Olson was born 1800 in Trondhjem Norway, and died 1850 in Norway. He married Irene Stephenson. She was born 1802 in Trondhjem Norway, and died Unknown in Norway.

Notes for Ole Olson:
Disputed Last Name:

Olson (Elmer Olsen letter to Judy Patten, 5/26/71)
Aritson (?) - Andrew Olsen Death Certificate
The name Hockling/Hoechling was apparently the farmstead where Ole was born, about 14 miles outside Trondhjem, NOR.

For many centuries Norwegians had only one name -- their Christian, or first name, given the child when it was christened. The second name was the patronymic form -- that is, if a man's first name was Hans, his daughter was (firstname) Hansdatter and his son was (firstname) Hansson. In the 1870's legislation was passed which stated that women should use the masculine form for their patronymic. Therefore, Guri Johnsdatter became Guri Johnson.

Those who lived in rural areas also used a third name to indicate where they lived -- the farm name. When people moved from one farm to another, their last name became the name of the new farm. It wasn't until after 1900 that legislation mandated that people must take permanent family names. Some took the name of the farm while others took the patronymic.

The latter date is accepted.

For many years a business man of Chetek, and at one time proprietor of Hotel Douglas, in that city, was a successful man, conservative, and solid in business, and his death was sincerely mourned. He was jovial and genial, he was friendly and sympathetic, he loved children and animals, and was especially fond of good horses. He was ever ready to do a kindly deed, and his benefactions were many.

Born in Trondhjem, Norway, October 16, 1844, son of Ole and Irene Olson (see Hockling), and was there reared and educated. As a young man he married. In the 1870s he came to America and entered the employ of Knapp, Stout & Co., at Menomonie, Wis., altering between their yards, sawmill, and store. His wife died in Norway soon after he came here. His daughter, Gusta, preferred to stay in [Norway], but a son, Olaf, and a daughter, Martha, joined their father [in the USA].
He arrived in Chetek in about 1882, and opened a place of refreshment which he conducted until 1910. He then conducted the Hotel Douglas, with the assistance of his wife until his lamented death, September, 5, 1917.

Married in Chetek, June 12, 1883 to Bertha Kathrena Jensen.

("History of Barron County Wisconsin"; Gordon, Curtiss-Wedge; H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co.; Minneapolis; 1922; pp.958-959).

The History of Barron County also lists Andrew as the first 1st Ward alderman in Chetek's history, elected in 1891. Also mentioned is that Andrew opened a drug store next to the Saloon; it was operated by Einer Kleve. (pp. 1102-1103)

Known also as "Black Andrew". Owned a tavern in Chetek, WI. Reportedly offered $1,000 in gold coin to anyone who could pull him over the bar. Nobody ever did. (William Olsen, family lore, 1977).

Chetek's favorite horse was Patrick, first owned by Walter Hathaway, then by Andrew Olson.

Notes for Bertha Kathrena Jensen:
Disputed Date of Birth:
June 28, 1853 ("History of Barron County Wisconsin"; Gordon, Curtiss-Wedge; H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Co.; Minneapolis; 1922).
June 28, 1863 (Lottie Olsen, family records, 1961; Elmer Olsen/Judy Patten letter; Grave marker).
The latter date is accepted based on ages at childbirth and two independent sources. Although the narrative from the History of Barron County was most likely supplied by Bertha, Elmer, Mabel, or Claude, the likelihood of a transcription error exists.

Daughter of Nels and Mary Jensen, pioneers, who came to this country from Denmark in the 1870s, and took a homestead of 160 acres of wild land at Moosear, Chetek Township, where they farmed for many years, until 1900 when they moved to the City of Chetek.

Mrs. Olsen proved a loyal helpmate and loving and understanding mother. She shared her husband's genial and helpful temperament, and has delighted in making her home a center of hospitality for her friends and her husband's friends, and for the friends of her children from early childhood up. She is a most estimable woman, and is highly regarded by all who knew her, as well as adored by her family.
