      9. Elmer Leroy3 Olsen (Andrew2, Ole1 Olson) was born April 19, 1890 in Chetek, WI2, and died June 1976 in Dousman, WI2. He married Lottie Emma Gisin December 26, 1919 in Superior, Wisconsin, daughter of Gotlieb Gisin and Mary Schiller. She was born July 25, 1886 in Leadville, CO, and died December 23, 1971 in Brookfield, WI.

Notes for Elmer Leroy Olsen:
A veteran of the World War.

Inducted into service at Superior, WI, June 18, 1918. First trained at Camp Grant, Illinois. Later sent to Camp Mills, NY, where he trained with the 332nd Machine Gun Battalion. Sailed for France September 12, 1918 where, upon arrival, was assigned to reserve duty back of the first line trenches at various points. At Chaumont he spent several weeks at General John J. Pershing's headquarters. Reached New York, December 24, 1918; discharged at Camp Grant in January, 1919.

Notes for Lottie Emma Gisin:
Born in Leadville, CO and very shortly thereafter moved to Northern Wisconsin. Settled in Ashland. Was very active throughout her life in the Lutheran Church.

Notes for Mabel Olsen:
Only child of Andrew & Bertha not mentioned in "History of Barron County." Although the History mentions eight children, only seven are listed. Ironically, it was Mabel who signed Andrew's death certificate.

A veteran of the World War.

Inducted into US Service at Chetek, April 28, 1918; sent to Camp Grant, Illinois (see Elmer Olsen). Sent to Camp Mills, LI, NY, June 4, 1918. Set sail from NY June 13; joined a convoy at Halifax, NS; reached England June 30, France July 3. Attached to radio corps of the 89th Division. From July 13-24, he was in the reserves in the third line. Took part in the St. Mihiel drive, was gassed September 4. Confined to hospital until February 1, 1919, with the exception of four days when he was out to participate in the Armistice Day celebration. Later assigned to the Army of Occupation. Sailed from Brest May 16, 1919; detained for a while at Camp Upton, LI, NY. Discharged at Camp Grant, IL, June 5, 1919.

Dewey was a real character. He was the favorite uncle of William Olsen. Fun loving, carousing, free spirit. Likely never graduated High School. The "History of Barron County" indicates he was "employed on the Great Lakes," likely in a sailing capacity. Bill Olsen worked summers (ca. 1939-1941) in Ashtabula, OH at Dewey's restaurant. The Chetek Alumni Directory places brother Rex in Ohio during the same time. Nothing is known about his seven wives and for all his marriages, his daughter, Pauline, was his only child; she by his sixth wife.

He married Carol Jane Mauritson September 25, 1947 in Whitefish Bay, WI, daughter of Henry Mauritson and Margaret Olson. She was born August 17, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN.

Notes for William Leroy Olsen:
Born in his home at 1805 Banks Ave, Superior, WI on a cold, snowy November night. Delivered by a Native American nursemaid, who held him outside the window in the cold night to ward off disease.

First ever Eagle Scout in the history of the City of Superior.
Graduated Superior HS, 1939, matriculated Superior State Teachers College, 1939. Matriculated Virginia Tech, 1940. Matriculated University of Wisconsin, 1941.

Joined Marine Corps after outbreak of World War II. Sgt. William L. Olsen, A Company, 5th Engineering Battalion, 5th Marine Division, V Corps, USMC. Joined the Marine Corps in April, 1942; activated in 1943. His only combat mission was at Iwo Jima (D-Day February 19, 1945). March 12, behind enemy lines, was there wounded in the left shoulder by a Japanese sniper. He made it back to the US lines where he passed out. He woke up 12 hours later on the duck en route to the hospital ship.

Returned to University of Wisconsin, Fall, 1946. Met Carol Mauritson, married September 25, 1947. Employd by Merritt, Chapman & Scott as an engineer. Lived in Peekskill, NY, Nitro, WV, Oak Ridge, TN, 1947-1949. Hit by truck 9/23/49 & broke back. Bed ridden for over one year. Left Oak Ridge December, 1949 & lived in Shorewood with Henry & Margaret Mauritson. Between 1951 & 1955 lived in Poughkeepsie, NY, New Paltz, NY, Utica, NY, Canadensis, PA, Alton, IL. Late 1955/early 1956 moved to Argentia, Newfoundland; returned to Lewiston, NY, 1958 where he was involved in construction of the Niagara Falls power plant. Moved to Oradell, NJ, early 1962 & Brookfield, WI in August, 1962. In 1965 left Merritt, Chapman & Scott and joined Hunzinger so he would not have to relocate & raise his family. Remained with Hunzinger until retirement in the Spring of 1989.

Regarded in Milwaukee business community as solid man in his profession; always ethical in his business dealings. "He put the industry first, his company second, and himself third."

Earliest memory - skating on double runners in Diamond Park, Mpls. Summer of '43, '44, or '45 spent in Minneapolis to avoid polio outbreak in Milwaukee. Same summer Hilma Halvordson died in Minneapolis.

Graduated Shorewood, HS 1946; matriculated to University of Wisconsin, Fall, 1946. Met William Olsen; married September, 25, 1947. Lived in Peekskill, NY, Nitro, WV, Oak Ridge, TN, 1947-1949. Left Oak Ridge December, 1949 & lived in Shorewood with Henry & Margaret Mauritson. Between 1951 & 1955 lived in Poughkeepsie, NY, New Paltz, NY, Utica, NY, Canadensis, PA, Alton, IL. Late 1955/early 1956 moved to Argentia, Newfoundland; returned to Shorewood, mid 1957 & attended 1957 Braves World Series victories. Returned to Newfoundland mid 1958 and later moved to Lewiston, NY, 1958. Moved to Oradell, NJ, early 1962 & Brookfield, WI in August, 1962. Lived at 1860 Melody Lane from August, 1962 until August, 1996. Most liked by the friends of her children, always opening home, welcoming others. In 1982 began travelling the world. Visited Hawaii, Alaska, England, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Lichtenstein, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Japan, Hong Kong, China; visited Egypt with Eric in 1983, Australia 1990. Visited Western Canada with Bill, fall, 1988.

HISTORICAL EVENTS as told to Eric Olsen:

12/7/1941: "I was in the Shorewood movie house - Sunday Matinee - when they announced [the bombing of Pearl Harbor]. Everything went quiet. I went home and my dad was white as a ghost, he had a really long face."

4/12/1945: "When FDR died, I was having a coke with a bunch of kids after school at the local drug store on Capital & Maryland. Most of my friends at that time were Democrats!"

5/7/1945: "I don't remember VE Day."

8/5/1945: "I believe I was in school when the A-bomb was dropped."

8/14/1945: "VJ Day (& night) was a big celebration. My friend, Lois Winter, and I took the street car downtown -- Wisconsin Avenue was closed to cars, etc. & it was wall to wall people hugging and kissing anyone and everyone. There were tons of sailors in town from Great Lakes, Illinois.

October, 1957 (Game 7): "I listened to the game on the radio (I was at work)."

2/20/1962: "I watched on TV John Glenn orbiting the earth. [I was] at home in Lewiston, NY with Eric."

1/1/1963: "Your dad and I were taking down the Christmas tree while the three of us watched the [Rose Bowl]."

11/23/1963: "I was taking a nap with Eric (pregnant with Nancy). My parents came up for a carry out fish fry and told me about the shooting [of Kennedy]. I did not have the TV or radio on until then! It was a horrible weather day - storms and raining buckets.

12/31/1967: "I'm sure your dad and I watched the Ice Bowl - or tried to with three little ones running around!"

7/18/1969: "IWe watched the first moon landing from our home (1860 Melody Lane) on TV . I only remember reading all about Chappaquiddick."

8/9/1974: "Nixon resigned on Sally's birthday. I listened [to his resignation] on the car radio while driving the girls and Amy Ricketts to Girl Scout Camp north of Madison."
