West Point, the county seat of Cuming County, is situated on the Elkhorn River, southeast of the central part of the county. The Sioux City & Pacific road (Elkhorn Valley Branch) passes through it , the growth of the town dating from 1870, the railroad having reached West Point in November of that year. It is now a town of 1,100 inhabitants, and is quite a shipping point for grain and livestock. For the five months ending January 31, over one hundred car-loads of live stock and thirty-five of grain have been shipped from this point. Its general trade is also good, and, through the exertions of the West Point Manufacturing Company and the Butter and Cheese Association, the town bids fair to be considerable of a manufacturing and dairy center. It has a fine court house, a splendid schoolhouse in process of erection, and its business edifices are, many of them, built solidly of brick. West Point has grown and is growing.

West Point was surveyed and platted by Niels Larsen, County Surveyor, in October, 1869, and recorded in May, 1870. The land upon which the town site was located embraced the homesteads of John D. Neligh, Thomas King and J. B. Hulst, and portions of David Neligh's and M. J. Hughes'. The streets were laid out eighty feet wide, except Sheridan, Willow and David, which were sixty-six feet in width. Additions were afterwards made as follows: Douglass' Addition, in April, 1870; Blair's, in April, and Hughes' and Coburn's in August, 1871; Neligh's First Addition in June and the Second in August, 1875.

The town was incorporated by unanimous vote of the County Commissioners, May 17, 1869, the following being appointed Trustees: J. B. Thompson, John D. Neligh, John J. Bruner, John Bromer and Herman Kloke.

West Point became a city in 1872, J. D. Neligh serving as the first Mayor. Then, in order, came J. C. Crawford, Herman Kloke, William Drahos, J. D. Neligh, and Otto Bauman. In 1879, by State enactment, a return was made to a town form of government. Its present officers are: Trustees--Chairman, Otto Bauman; G. A. Crowell, Jerome Vostrovsky, James Mortison and David Neligh; Clerk, H. J. Stevens; Treasurer, Jerome Vostrovsky; Policeman, Carl Schwenk

DAILY NEBRASKA STATE JOURNAL, LINCOLN, SUNDAY 5 JUNE 1887
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Immigrant Issue" of
Lincoln State Journal
Sunday 5 June 1887, pages 15 & 16

This special edition was intended to PROMOTE Nebraska as a state and provide the towns with an opportunity to advertise their status, attract new residents.

WEST POINT
--------------

County Seat of Cuming County - On the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad - Eighty-eight Miles From Lincoln - Population Two Thousand One Hundred

West Point, the county seat of Cuming county, is beautifully located on the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley railroad near the Elkhorn river and contains a population of 2,100. It is surrounded by a well settled and exceedingly fertile agricultural district and is numbered among the most prosperous and promising towns in the Elkhorn valley. Its retail trade is probably not exceeded by that of any town in the valley. It has manufacturing plants in which upwards of #325,000 are invested - these industrial enterprises consisting of a paper mill, a flour mill, a creamery and foundry. It contains large and sightly school houses, six churches, a brick court house and jail (constructed at a cost of $40,000) the grounds surrounding which are now being improved at a cost of $800. It has also many sightly residences, beautiful homes and substantial business blocks and houses, may of which are constructed of brick. While West Point is not what might be called a "booming" town it is a solid one which has a prosperous present and a bright future. Its magnificent water power and established manufacturing interest gives West Point prominence over many other interior towns and insures for it a steady and permanent growth. It is a good town to invest money in, and careful, energetic men who establish here are sure to succeed in any of the commercial enterprises incidental to the west.

The Neligh House. This hotel, the largest in West Point, was erected in 1873, the work being finished January 9, of that year. In May the house was opened to the public by Reid & Lipsey, who continue as managers until September, when Mr. Neligh took charge. In December the management passed into the hands of Mr. Randall, who occupied the house till February, 1874. A. D. Breemer next ran the place until November, 1878, after which Mr. William Sievers occupied it two months. The ownership of the property now passed from the hands of Mr. Neligh, and Mr. Hale, the purchaser, had charge until November, 1879. He was followed by E. L. Eno, who remained until August, 1881; at that time, W. D. Moulton became proprietor and has since continued to run the house. The building, a fine three story brick, is conveniently located and has facilities for accommodating sixty guests. The whole property at present is worth $12.000. Both the comfort of the internal arrangements and the care and skill of the proprietor tend to render it the popular hotel of the place.

Child of Christiana Gisin and John Neligh is:
+ 9 i.   Fred Neligh3 ??, born 1905.

      5. Gotlieb2 Gisin (John1) was born November 22, 1855 in Switzerland1, and died Aft. 1934 in Wisconsin. He married Mary Schiller March 05, 1884, daughter of Fredrick Schiller and Johanna Herzer. She was born May 22, 1857 in Rockland, MI2, and died September 30, 1934 in Superior, Wisconsin.

Notes for Gotlieb Gisin:
Based on known birth dates and birthplaces of Gottlieb (Lottie Olsen Records) and Caroline (Schlickbernd Home Page), immigration to USA occurred between 1855 and 1862.

Where, when and how Gotlieb met Mary Schiller is uncertain. The birth of sister Caroline places the Gisin family in Houghton, Michigan in 1862, 40 miles from Mary Schiller's birthplace of Rockland. An undated photograph taken in West Point, NE shows Elizabeth and her seven children. Carolyn Kloke appears younger than she does in another photo dated 1889. Gotlieb looks like he is in his late 20's/early 30's. Another photo places Mary with Gotlieb's sister in Leadville, CO in 1884. This suggests Gotlieb and Mary were in West Point, NE in the early 1880's and that they went to Leadville, CO in search of silver in the 1883/1884 rush. They were likely married in either place.

Lottie was born in Leadville, CO in July, 1886 and appears later that year in a photograph taken in Minneapolis. Subsequent dated photographs in are all identified as being from Ashland or other points in Northern Wisconsin.

All surviving photographs place Gotlieb and Mary in Wisconsin through at least 1934.
================================================================

Most of the information I have comes from my grandmother, Lottie Gisin Olsen; she was very good about labeling her photo albums. From what I know, John had seven children, of whom Gotlieb is my ancestor.

I know that Gotlieb was born in Switzerland in 1855, Caroline was born in Michigan in 1862, and that the family settled in West Pount, NE in the 1870s. From what I have picked up, there was a large German community there. Gotlieb married Mary Schiller whom he met while in Michigan. In the 1880s Gotlieb & Mary headed to Leadville, CO to follow the silver strike. Apparently, he didn't strike it rich because by the late 1880's the family moved back to Northern Wisconsin where Gotlieb, Mary, and their 4 children took up residence with Mary's mother.

Moved to Superior in 1886 (per Mary's death Certificate).

As of 1896 - were living at 1628 Oakes Ave, Superior, WI

By the 1920s, The Gisin's owned a shoe store at 634 Tower Ave. Superior, WI.

Notes for Mary Schiller:
Born: Johanna Marie Schiller ( "Die Bibel ober Die Ganze Heilige Schrift" published Leipzig, 1849).

Where, when and how Gotlieb met Mary Schiller is uncertain. The birth of Caroline Gisin in 1862 places the Gisin family in Houghton, Michigan, 40 miles from Mary Schiller's birthplace of Rockland. A photograph dated 1884 places Mary with (future?) sister-in law Emma Gisin Baker in Leadville, CO. Gotlieb and Mary were in West Point in the early to mid 1880s and were likely married there or in Colorado. No evidence exists of any other Schillers being in Nebraska or Colorado at the time.

Lottie was born in Leadville, CO in July, 1886 and appears later that year in a photograph taken in Minneapolis. Subsequent dated photographs in are all identified as being from Ashland or other points in Northern Wisconsin.

Moved to Superior in 1886 - lived at 1823 Tower Avenue (per Mary's death Certificate).

All surviving photographs place Gotlieb and Mary in Wisconsin through at least 1934.

Children of Gotlieb Gisin and Mary Schiller are:
+ 10 i.   Lottie Emma3 Gisin, born July 25, 1886 in Leadville, CO; died December 23, 1971 in Brookfield, WI.
+ 11 ii.   Albert Gisin, born September 18, 1888 in Wisconsin; died July 1971.
+ 12 iii.   Edna Marie Gisin, born December 18, 1891; died December 1984 in Superior, Wisconsin.
+ 13 iv.   John Gisin, born Bet. 1892 - 1895; died Bef. 1971.
