Descendants of Fredrick Schiller

Generation No. 1

      1. Fredrick1 Schiller was born Bet. 1826 - 1827 in Germany, and died Bet. 1870 - 1890 in Michigan or Wisconsin. He married Johanna Herzer June 18, 1855 in Germany1. She was born February 18, 1830 in Germany1, and died Aft. 1906 in Ashland(?), WI.

Notes for Fredrick Schiller:
Born Johan Georg Friederich Schiller ("Die Bibel ober Die Ganze Heilige Schrift," published Leipzig, 1849). Does not appear with Johanna in photographs taken after 1887 in Ashland; apparently deceased.

Arrived in NYC on September 28, 1855 from Bremen on the "Atlantic." Immigration list gives occupation as a farmer. Was accompanied by Johanne (wife) and Ernestine (likely a sister). The Schillers were likely from the Southern Area of Germany as that was the source of most of the early German emmigration in the 1850s and 60s.

There is ample evidence of Schillers throughout Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the 1890s and early 1900s.

A note on the names of the children of Friedrick and Johanna Schiller: There are three captioned photographs (ca. 1890s) of Albert, Earnest, and Edward Schiller. The Leipzig Bible lists six children of Friedrich and Johanna. The only clear name is Marie's; the others are all German and not decipherable. The birth dates are clear for all children. The link between the photograph captions and the names in the Leipzig Bible is uncertain. The Elmer Olsen/Judy Patten letter lists Ernest, Marie, Albert, Edward, and George.

The placement of the Schiller descendants other than Marie's are sketchy. Della Williams married a Schiller, a Laurine (?) figures in the family somewhere as does Helen Schiller Quigley and Laura Schiller.

Notes for Johanna Herzer:
Dates on Johanna Hertzer & Children from "Die Bibel ober Die Ganze Heilige Schrift" published Leipzig, 1849.

Arrived in NYC on September 28, 1855 from Bremen on the "Atlantic." Was accompanied by Frederich (husband) and Ernestine (likely a sister-in-law) Schiller.

Moved from Michigan to Ashland, WI between 1857 & 1887. Appears in Ashland in 1887 living with the Gotlieb Gisin family. No photograph of Friedrich is known to exist.

Children of Fredrick Schiller and Johanna Herzer are:
  2 i.   Ernest2 Schiller, born March 28, 18562.
+ 3 ii.   Mary Schiller, born May 22, 1857 in Rockland, MI; died September 30, 1934 in Superior, Wisconsin.
4 iii.   Albert Schiller, born December 16, 18582; died Unknown.
5 iv.   Willhelm Schiller, born August 16, 18602; died Unknown.
  Notes for Willhelm Schiller:
Only child of Friedrich & Johanna not listed in the Elmer Olsen/Judy Patten Letter of May, 1971.

  6 v.   Edward Schiller, born September 02, 18622; died Bet. 1900 - 1950.
+ 7 vi.   George Schiller, born June 22, 1864; died Unknown.
Generation No. 2

      3. Mary2 Schiller (Fredrick1) was born May 22, 1857 in Rockland, MI2, and died September 30, 1934 in Superior, Wisconsin. She married Gotlieb Gisin March 05, 1884, son of John Gisin and Elizabeth Gisin. He was born November 22, 1855 in Switzerland3, and died Aft. 1934 in Wisconsin.

Notes for Mary Schiller:
Born: Johanna Marie Schiller ( "Die Bibel ober Die Ganze Heilige Schrift" published Leipzig, 1849).

Where, when and how Gotlieb met Mary Schiller is uncertain. The birth of Caroline Gisin in 1862 places the Gisin family in Houghton, Michigan, 40 miles from Mary Schiller's birthplace of Rockland. A photograph dated 1884 places Mary with (future?) sister-in law Emma Gisin Baker in Leadville, CO. Gotlieb and Mary were in West Point in the early to mid 1880s and were likely married there or in Colorado. No evidence exists of any other Schillers being in Nebraska or Colorado at the time.

Lottie was born in Leadville, CO in July, 1886 and appears later that year in a photograph taken in Minneapolis. Subsequent dated photographs in are all identified as being from Ashland or other points in Northern Wisconsin.

Moved to Superior in 1886 - lived at 1823 Tower Avenue (per Mary's death Certificate).

All surviving photographs place Gotlieb and Mary in Wisconsin through at least 1934.

Notes for Gotlieb Gisin:
Based on known birth dates and birthplaces of Gottlieb (Lottie Olsen Records) and Caroline (Schlickbernd Home Page), immigration to USA occurred between 1855 and 1862.

Where, when and how Gotlieb met Mary Schiller is uncertain. The birth of sister Caroline places the Gisin family in Houghton, Michigan in 1862, 40 miles from Mary Schiller's birthplace of Rockland. An undated photograph taken in West Point, NE shows Elizabeth and her seven children. Carolyn Kloke appears younger than she does in another photo dated 1889. Gotlieb looks like he is in his late 20's/early 30's. Another photo places Mary with Gotlieb's sister in Leadville, CO in 1884. This suggests Gotlieb and Mary were in West Point, NE in the early 1880's and that they went to Leadville, CO in search of silver in the 1883/1884 rush. They were likely married in either place.

Lottie was born in Leadville, CO in July, 1886 and appears later that year in a photograph taken in Minneapolis. Subsequent dated photographs in are all identified as being from Ashland or other points in Northern Wisconsin.

All surviving photographs place Gotlieb and Mary in Wisconsin through at least 1934.
================================================================

Most of the information I have comes from my grandmother, Lottie Gisin Olsen; she was very good about labeling her photo albums. From what I know, John had seven children, of whom Gotlieb is my ancestor.

I know that Gotlieb was born in Switzerland in 1855, Caroline was born in Michigan in 1862, and that the family settled in West Pount, NE in the 1870s. From what I have picked up, there was a large German community there. Gotlieb married Mary Schiller whom he met while in Michigan. In the 1880s Gotlieb & Mary headed to Leadville, CO to follow the silver strike. Apparently, he didn't strike it rich because by the late 1880's the family moved back to Northern Wisconsin where Gotlieb, Mary, and their 4 children took up residence with Mary's mother.

Moved to Superior in 1886 (per Mary's death Certificate).

As of 1896 - were living at 1628 Oakes Ave, Superior, WI

By the 1920s, The Gisin's owned a shoe store at 634 Tower Ave. Superior, WI.

Children of Mary Schiller and Gotlieb Gisin are:
+ 8 i.   Lottie Emma3 Gisin, born July 25, 1886 in Leadville, CO; died December 23, 1971 in Brookfield, WI.
+ 9 ii.   Albert Gisin, born September 18, 1888 in Wisconsin; died July 1971.
+ 10 iii.   Edna Marie Gisin, born December 18, 1891; died December 1984 in Superior, Wisconsin.
+ 11 iv.   John Gisin, born Bet. 1892 - 1895; died Bef. 1971.

      7. George2 Schiller (Fredrick1) was born June 22, 18644, and died Unknown. He married Della Williams Bet. 1885 - 1893. She was born Bet. 1870 - 1877.

Notes for George Schiller:
Any lineage from George Schiller is sketchy and based only on names and undated photographs.

Photos place Schiller Brothers in Waukesha, WI, and in Oregon ca. early 1900s. The Lottie Gisin photo collection and momentos are domincated by George over all oher Schillers suggesting Lottie was very close to her Uncle George.

Notes for Della Williams:
Undated photos show a young looking Della with George. The look of the photos suggests a person possibly younger than someone who would be born in the 1870s.

Children of George Schiller and Della Williams are:
  12 i.   George3 Schiller II, born October 26, 18935; died October 19735.
13 ii.   Helen Schiller, born Abt. 1900. She married ? Quigley.
Generation No. 3

      8. Lottie Emma3 Gisin (Mary2 Schiller, Fredrick1) was born July 25, 1886 in Leadville, CO, and died December 23, 1971 in Brookfield, WI. She married Elmer Leroy Olsen December 26, 1919 in Superior, Wisconsin, son of Andrew Olsen and Bertha Jensen. He was born April 19, 1890 in Chetek, WI6, and died June 1976 in Dousman, WI6.

Notes for Lottie Emma Gisin:
Born in Leadville, CO and very shortly thereafter moved to Northern Wisconsin. Settled in Ashland. Was very active throughout her life in the Lutheran Church.
