Gernat:
Simeon Gernat and his wife Anastasia Tacak
are the oldest members of the Gernat family that we can document. Most of the
Gernats who lived in Circ in the 1800's are descended from them. The Gernat
families of Tarentum,PA, Charleroi, PA, Punxsutawney, PA and Gowanda, NY are descendants. We believe that all of the
Gernats in Circ were related, but we cannot prove that for the descendants of
John Gernat and Anna Duranik.
Many of Simeon's children and
grandchildren used the alias, Juritskov. An alias was used to distinguish
people with the same last name. It probably refers to an ancestor Juri, or
George.
Simeon was a witness to a wedding in
January 1793 a month before his daughter Eva was married. Simeon died in 1816 at age 70 of unknown
causes. He did receive the Last Rites
of the Church.

Tacak:
Anastasia's last name, Tacak, (Tat-sak) is
only known by the reference in her son Mychal's second marriage entry in
1837.
There are several Tacak families in Circ,
but we don't know how Anastasia is related to them. With Jakob Gernat and Eva Kotula, Anastasia was a witness
(godparent) to the baptism of John
Plavcsan in May 1786 and Michael Plavcsan in 1788. Jakob Gernat was a godfather several times between 1780 and
1803. We don't know who he is.
Anastasia was also a godmother to Anna
Kulik in 1789, Susanna Kulik in 1797 and another Susanna Kulik in 1799. The date of Anastasia's death is
unknown.

son of Simeon and Anastasia. John's son
Elias is later recorded with the alias, Juritskov, the family nickname. The
estimate of John's age matches well with the birth in 1775. The name of the
child was not recorded. Witnesses were Vasily Shima, Ioan Garanchovsky, Yuliana
Mlinar, wife of Yurko, and Maria Zvalaren, wife of Peter.

Elias was baptized on 31 June 1853, with godparents Andreas
Varchola and Maria Havrilla. Elias is
listed in the 1969 Census as living with his parents. It says he was born in
Circ in 1854 though the actual year was 1853. He was a student, and could read
but not write.
We don't know much about Elias
Gernat. He was the youngest of six
children. He was only married for four
years when his first wife, Anna, died shortly after childbirth with twins. The twins had died a few days earlier. We
don't know what happened to his first son, Stephan.
Only a month later, he married Eva Andrij
on 26 May 1879. She had been a widow for about a year. Sudden remarriage after the death of a
spouse was a common practice in Circ. It
shows up often in the records. She had two children in her first marriage. The first died at age three. The second who had been born after his
father's death, died later in the summer of 1879 at age one.
Eva and Elias went on to have two children
together, Anna and John.
Anna stayed in Europe
and married while John eventually emigrated to the U.S. and settled in
Charleroi, Pa. Tradition tells us that
Elias came to the U.S. and was present at his son's wedding in Charleroi in
1906. After that he left. One report was that he died in Taylor in
eastern Pennsylvania. There is a Greek
Catholic Church there, but no record of his death or burial has been found.
According to his great grandson Nick
Dubnansky, Elias lived in house # 143 in Circ.

Eva Andrij's family was a mystery for a
while. The 1868 census lists her
father, John Andrij's birthplace as Circ.
But there were no Andrij's in the early record. It is now clear that the original family
name was Zsintsar. The alias, Adriov,
was often included. At some point the
alias became the family name, Andrij.
Some of John's grandchildren were listed as Zsintsar Andrij in the birth
entries.
Eva's first marriage lasted about four
years until her husband Michael Cserkala died of typhus at age 29. Her second child was born a few months after
her husband's death. Both children from
this marriage died young. Eva remarried
Elias Gernat, a widower in 1879. Eva
and Elias had two more children together,
Anna and John. Anna married and
stayed in Europe. John moved to the
U.S. as a young man and settled in Charleroi, Pa. Eva died on 14 February. 1918 at the age of 65.

We know from his children that when John
first came to the U.S. he went to Springville, N.Y. to work on the railroad
with a relative already there. Springville is south of Buffalo in western N.Y.
state. He tried several different jobs. While working at a condensed milk plant, he
met Adele Harms, his future wife. John
later began to develop health problems and
was advised to spend more time outdoors. John and Adele then bought a
farm in nearby Gowanda, New York and raised a family of ten children. We are not sure when the second
"t" was added to the family name.
