seems to have moved to Raznany to marry Anna Piga.
Notes for Anna Piga:
Anna Piga was born in Raznzny. Both parents had died by the time she was
eighteen. She got married a few months after her mother died. We suspect that a marriage was arranged with
John Triscs from Jarovnice so he could take over the farm and keep the family
together.

22. Anna4 Triscs (John3, John2,
Mathias1) was born 01 November 1862 in # 93 Raznany, (Nyars ardo)
Saris, Hungary, Austrian Empire, and died Abt. 1930 in age 75. Polanovce, Spis,
Czechoslovakia. She married Andríj
Kolcun Abt. 1884 in Austria-Hungary, son of Michael Kolcun and Catherina
Kolcun. He was born 10 September 1856
in Ruská Vol'a, Saris, Hungary, Austrian Empire, and died 08 July 1922 in
Polanovce, Spis, Czechoslovakia1.
Notes for Anna Triscs:
Anna Triscs (Trishch) was born 1 Nov 1862
in Raznany, which was then called Nyars
ardo in Hungarian. We don't know where
or when she met her husband, Andrij Kolcun.
Notes for Andríj
Kolcun:
The story passed on by Andrij's
grandchildren is Europe was that Andrij left home in Ruska Volya as a young man
to find work. He sent money home with
the goal of buying land in Ruska Volya.
After several years of saving, he went back home to find that someone
had spent the money. He got angry and
left and never moved back there again.
We don't know how he met his wife Anna
Triscs or when they married. The first record of them together is the birth of
Mary their first child in 1885. Mary
was baptized in Rencisov, Saris County.
It is just a few miles from Uzovske Peklany, where Anna's family had
moved in about 1879.
The baptisms of four of the first five children of Andrij and Anna are recorded
in Rencisov. The residences given in
the records are scattered throughout the country. We think that Andrij moved around for work. In 1888 he is listed
as a "famulus" in Latin, which is a servant or assistant. In later years he is listed as an auriga, in
Latin, or driver. Anna may have stayed
in the family home in Uzovske Peklany while he traveled. Or they both traveled and she went home to
have her babies.
Their second child, Helen, was born while
they were living in Cervenica, Saris County. This is only 10 or 20 miles from Rencisov. Helen was baptized in the nearest Greek
Catholic Church in Lutina, Saris County.
Andrij's family was Greek Catholic and Anna's was Roman Catholic. Their children were baptized in a Greek
Catholic church or the baptism was
recorded in a Greek Catholic church after the ceremony was performed by a Roman
Catholic priest.
After the first five children were born
the family moved to Polanovce in Spis County, which remained the family home up
to the present day. Andrij and Anna worked for a wealthy Hungarian noble named
Csaky. The family owned the famous Spis
Castle, which is about 3 miles from Polanovce.
The Csaky family lived in a large manor house in Bijacovce which was
close by. The remaining Kolcun children
were born in Polanovce. The Polanovce
records are not available after 1895.
The children's baptisms were recorded in the nearest Greek Catholic
Church in Olsavica as was Andrij's death in 1922.

Austria-Hungary, and died 02 April 1970 in Charleroi, Washington, Pennsylvania,
USA3.
Notes for Helen
Kolcun:
According to Helen's baptismal record, her
parents were living in Voros Alma (Hungarian) or Cervenica (Slovak) in Saris
County, Austria-Hungary, when Helen was born. She was baptized in the nearest
Greek Catholic Church in Lutina, Saris Co. Helen was baptized by Anthony
Rojkovics. Her godparents were Andreas Stekni, Roman Catholic from Voros alma
(Cervenica) and Anna Seshayi, Roman Catholic, from Voros alma (Cevenica).
In the baptismal entry Helen's father is
listed as a "famulus" in Latin, which is a servant or attendant.
While Helen was still a child, the family moved to Polanovce, Spis County, where Helen grew
up. Polanovce remained the family home. Helen followed her older sister Mary to
Charleroi, Pa. as a teenager. There she
married John Gernat of Circ, Saris County.

Notes for John Gernat:
John Gernat was often called "Big
John". He was born in Circ in
1885, and baptized on 30 Aug. 1885 with godparents Andrew Labas and Helena
Andrij. He came to the U.S. in 1903. According to his naturalization
applications he left Bremen, Germany on 4 or 7 April 1903. He traveled on the steamship Barbarossa of
the North German Lloyd line, landing in New York about 18 April 1903. The
application says that he has been living in Pennsylvania since 19 April 1903.
We have a copy of the passenger list of the Barbarossa. Also on the ship were Vazul Kovalak, age
18, of Circ and Lawrence Gernat, age 39, of Ruska Volya. Kovalak was going to
Passaic, N.J. and Lawrence Gernat was going to Johnsonburg, Pa. A George Ivaniszus, age 30, was going to
Charleroi as well.
On the passenger list his last name is
misspelled as Gerlat. His age is 17 and
he is traveling from Circ to Charleroi, Pa.
He has $18 with him and has not been in the U.S. before. The list says that he is traveling to
Charleroi to meet his brother, John Gernat.
We suspect that it should be his cousin, John Gernat, later of Tarentum,
Pa., who was already living in Charleroi.
In 1906 he married Helen Kolcun in Charleroi,
Pa. The priest was Rev. Emil Seregelli. In 1907 John served on the Council of Administration
of Holy Ghost Church in Charleroi, Pa., which rebuilt the church. The original wooden church was destroyed by
tornado. The church was rebuilt of
stone on the same site. John and Helen lived in Charleroi, Pa.
through 1912. They rented a house on Fallowfield Avenue. In 1913 they lived Blairsville, Pa. John's cousin, John Gernat, was also living
in Blairsville at that time. There was
a glass plant there, and it's likely that they both worked there. John and
Helen were back in Charleroi by 1917, where they stayed until the 1930's.
In 1923 John and Helen were living at 312
Ninth St. in Charleroi. John was a
glassworker. He became a U.S. citizen
on 20 May 1925. His witnesses were Mike Pavilak and George Stys, both
glassworkers.
In
the 1920's John worked for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. in Charleroi. In 19??
the Charleroi plant of PPG closed. John
began working at the PPG plant in Ford City, Pa. For several years he commuted
between Ford City and Charleroi. Eventually, the family moved to Ford City, Pa,
living at 1015 Sixth Avnue.
John retired from PPG in 1950. John and Helen moved back to 312 Ninth St.,
Charleroi for their retirement. Their daughter Olga had been living next door
in Ford City with her husband Mike Chechak. They bought and moved into John and
Helen's house in 1950.
On 10 February 1966 they celebrated
their 60th wedding anniversary. Both
John and Helen were members of the Greek Catholic Union, Branch No. 22 of
Stockdale, Pa. since 1905.

Pauline's birth record lists the residence
as Fenyohaza, in Hungarian, or Lubochna, in Slovak, house # 32. We believe that Pauline's father may have
been working there but that the birth occurred near Rencisov, where the baptism
was recorded.

"GIRL KILLED AND NINE OTHER PERSONS
INJURED IN COLLISION OF AUTOS---
A sixteen year old girl was killed and
nine other persons injured in a collision between two automobiles at Donora
about 10:30 last night.
The dead girl is Margaret Varkola, 16,
daughter of Michael Varkola of 1015 McKean avenue, Charleroi. She succumbed at 4:15 this morning in the
Memorial hospital at Monongahela from her injuries which included a fracture of
the skull, punctured lungs and cuts and bruises. Anna Gernatt, 16, of 312 Ninth street, Charleroi, her companion
is a patient in the hospital suffering from head injuries and lacerations. Others injured included Steve Livkulich of
828 Meadow avenue, Charleroi, and Mike Verbich of 1380 Meldon Avenue,
Donora. Verbich was the driver of a
Ford roadster in which the other three were passengers.
According to an investigation made by
Donora police, Verbich, who admitted having had a drink of wine was (d)riving
recklessly south on McKean avenue at the borough limits and crashed into a
Studebaker sedan driven by J.R. Hill and his passengers, his wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Coates and Mrs Edward Bowen and infant son, all of Donora. Hill noticed the Ford approaching and
attempted to avoid a collision but the Verbich car crashed into him, almost
demolishing both machines. All the
passengers of both cars were cut and bruised and the two Charleroi girls and
Livkulich were taken to the hospital.
Livkulich after having his injuries dressed was permitted to go home
after being released on his own recognizance.
The dead girl has been looking after her
three younger sisters and brothers following the death of her mother three
months ago."---- Monessen Daily

Notes for Susan
Kolcun:
In Susanna's birth record the residence is
listed as Fenyohaza in Hungarian or Lubochna, in Slovak, house #80. This is about 100 miles to the west of
Rencisov. We suspect that her father was working there, but the birth occurred
near Rencisov, probably Uzovske Peklany, where Susan's grandparents had lived.
The baptism was recorded in Rencisov and was performed by Anthony Mraz, the
priest of Rencisov. Susanna's godparents were Andreas Palocsko, roman catholic
and Tereza Tacz, roman catholic, from Jernye or Jarovnice, Saris County.
On Susan's Petition for Naturalization she
states that her birthplace is "Bondi" which we believe is Bunde, in
Saris county. We believe the family
lived there when Susan was young, before moving to Polanovce.
Susan left Bremen, Germany on the vessel
Kronprinz Wilhelm and arrived in New York on 28 Aug 1906, according to her
Petition for Naturalization.

SPORTRAITS: by Johnny Bunardzya
Mail Sports Editor
"No newspaperman has a penchant for
including eulogies in his works, especially when he has to write about great
guys the likes of Dr. John E. Dubnansky, leading Charleroi dentist who passed
away yesterday in a Pittsburgh hospital. When the Good Lord tapped 'Doc' on the
shoulder, he not only removed one of Charleroi's most successful professional
men but also a true sportsman. Shame of
it all is that 'Doc's' time to go came too soon--much too soon-- for he was
only 41 years old. Death was attributed to uremic poisoning. Because we came to Charleroi in 1946, we
didn't know 'Doc' as well as most folks here did. But in the short time we've been here, we came to know and
respect 'Doc' as one of the best friends a sports writer could ask for, he was
that obliging and helpful. Our first
meeting came when 'Doc' was president of the Charleroi Booster Club, an
organization made up of sports-minded men from all walks of life for the
betterment of high school athletics in the Magic City. A charter member, 'Doc' devoted much time
and effort in his spare monents to make kids, especially athletes, happy. 'Doc's' friendliness to athletes and
love for sports stems from the time he himself took part in athletics while
attending CHS. Always a husky fellow,
'Dub' (as he was known then) was one of Charleroi High's better basketball
players. He liked football, baseball
and other sports, but basketball was his first love. As a player, 'Doc' played guard on the crack CHS team of
1926-27 which won 21 out of 22 games and captured the sectional championship,
only to lose to stronger Bellevue High quint in the first round of the WPIAL
Playoffs.
That same 1927 basketball team, whose loss
to Bellevue was a keen disappointment to its followers who envisoned the WPIAL
title, salvaged some prestige by winning the Class A Washington County
championship. Unlike today when
all five members of a team are expected to perform equally as sharpshooters,
basketball guards in 'Doc's' day did just that--guard. It was rarity for a guard to break into the
scoring lineup for more than one, two or possibly three points then only
because of free throws. But in the final
game of the 1927 Washington County title series, 'Doc' helped spark a 20-12
triumph over Canonsburg with three field goals as a result of his long-range
shooting. He made eight points in all
to lead the Cougars to victory and emerged as the game's leading scorer. 'Doc', whose playing always had been
consistent, hard and unsung until that last game, was honored by tourney
officials who named him to a first team position on the all-Class A Washington
County Team. Upon graduation from high
school in 1927, 'Doc' enrolled in the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa,
Ala., staying there for one year before transferring to Pitt where he received
his degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1931. He returned to Charleroi as a full-fledged dentist and became one
of the community's leading professional men.
A sportsman of the first water, 'Doc'
never turned his back on any worthwhile project that had to do with the betterment
of youngsters through the medium of recreation and sports. There was a day last
summer in Bill Lee's restaurant when this writer and James (Rab) Currie,CHS
football and basketball coach, were seated at a table discussing the Midget
League ( organized baseball for boys between 9 and 12 years) which was still in
its infancy here. 'Doc' who
usually lunched in Lee's, sauntered over tho the table and after politely
excusing himself, he started singing the Midget League's praises as one of the
finest movements ever undertaken here for the welfare of kids. When he finished, 'Doc' asked if there was
anything he could do to lend assistance to the Midget League. Told that everything was working to
perfection, 'Doc' reached into his pocket and tossed a $20 bill on the table as
his personal contribution toward the cause, without benefit of solicitation. That's just one of the instances which make
'Doc' stand out in the hearts and minds of his many admirers. He was as unselfish, understanding, popular
and likeable as they come. He was
well-liked by those who knew him personally and by those who only heard about
him. He had few, if any, enemies. Although his death is is regarded as an escape
from long suffering through illness, it came untimely and tragically. In the prime of life, he had everything to
live for and his departure to the Great Beyond is felt keenly by the entire
community. Because the Grim Reaper
got to him sooner than anyone had a right to expect, we deeply regret that
'Doc' isn't aroung to see for himself just how much he meant to Charleroi. That's because newspapermen , for some
inexplicable reason, get around to writing eulogies when it is too late."

present intersection of Rt. 66 and Fifth Avenue. After school he would bring
the cow back. The cow's name was
"Cherry" and this became a nickname for Pete.
When Pete was older, he was known for
sitting on the front porch reading Western paperback novels. One of the cowboy heros was named
"Chappy" and this became another nickname for Pete.
Pete graduated from Ford City High School
on 26, May 1932. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the National
Athletic Society. He lettered in Baseball in 1930.
In 1935-1937 Pete belonged the the
Pennsylvania National Guard. From a photograph we know that he was in trainning
at Indiantown Gap, Pa. from 16 August
through 31 August 1935. His unit was
called up for guard duty during the disasterous floods of 1936. He was assigned to the Vandergrift, Pa.
area. With him in this unit were John Varholla and Whitely Suhorsky.
Pete served in the U.S. Army during World
War II. From his discharge papers we know the following. He was inducted into
the Army on 18 Jan 1943. He entered
active service on 25 Jan 1943 at Camp George C. Meade, MD. His organization was Company C 239th
Engineer Construction Battalion. His
military occupational specialty was Rigger 189. He served in the following campaigns, New Guinea and South
Philippines Liberation. Pete received
the following decorations and Citations: American Theater Ribbon,
Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon w/2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon
w/1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal World War II.
Pete departed the U.S. for the
Asia-Pacific Theater on 6 Jan 1944 and arrived there on 3 feb 1944. He departed
for the U.S. on 31 Dec 1945 and arrived on 16 Jan 1946. He received an Honorable Discarge on 23 Jan
1946 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. His rank was Technician Fourth Grade.
While in the Pacific Pete met several Ford
City natives including Andy Zubik and Mike Wolosonovich.

Chronicler of Ford City life, Mikula
dies--- By Patrick Shuster , Staff Writer.
FORD CITY--- John Mikula, former Leader
Times reporter and columnist for more that 40 years, died at his home
yesterday. An obituary appears on Page
3. Mikula, who was a reporter for the
Leader Times from May 1948 to January 1987, continued to write weekly columns
for the paper after his retirement.
During his nearly 40 years as a reporter, Mikula covered Ford City
Council and Armstrong County courts and commissioner, state and local police
and wrote feature articles. He also
wrote about weddings, births, deaths, high school dances and graduations. Mikula was born in Tarentum July 6, 1914,
to Andrew and Susan Mikula. His father,
a glass melter for PPG, moved the family from Tarentum to Charleroi and then to
Ford City. When Mikula graduated from
Ford City High School, he got a job as a glassworker with PPG, while at the
same time attending classes at the University of Pittsburgh. During his journalism and literature
studies at the university, Mikula gained writing experience by reporting and editing
for the Pitt News and the Pitt Panther magazine, as well as the Pittsburgh
Plate Glass company magazine. While
in college, Mikula served 30 months in the Navy During World War II, where he
landed on the beach of Normandy, escorted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to
the Yalta Conference and the king of Saudi Arabia to a meeting with the
president and kings of Egypt and Ethiopia. Mikula began his career at the Leader Times after his
graduation from Pitt in May of 1948 when he asked former editor Wayne Owen for
a job. Owen wanted him to start on a Saturday, but Mikula had a company picnic
to attend at PPG. His first Leader
Times story was coverage of the company picnic. John Englert was Ford City Borough Council president when
Mikula coverd the body. He said: "He was a good man. A fair man. He
had a heart of gold. John was a good reporter and always
believed in presenting the truth no matter what," said Englert. "He was able to be fair and tell the
whole story from both sides. John
knew how to spin stories about people. He told real people stories and could always see the funny side of
serious things," added
Englert. Englert who served on the Ford
City Hall of Fame board with Mikula, also said, " As the oldest member of
the group, he always gave us good advice on how things should be
done." John Lukowsky of Ford
City, a friend and poker buddy of Mikula's, said, "He lived a normal life
like everyone else." Lukowsky,
who met Mikula when they stayed at the same rooming house at Pitt, said he knew
Mikula for at least 50 years and were close friends the entire time. "He was friendly and very easy to get
to know. What friends he had were very
close to him," said Lukowsky.
The two also played poker together once a month with a group called
"FRSTMRS" which was derived from the first initials of the players,
he said. "John was a fairly good poker player. He liked to play cards.
John was well respected by everyone he knew. Some people got angry with him at times for stories he wrote, but
he wrote things the way he saw them," he said. "He didn't have an ax to grind with people." Michael O'Hare, current managing editor of
the Leader Times, worked with Mikula in the early 1970's.
"John's style of reporting is missing
in journalism today. Not an event went on that he missed. For much of his career he worked six days a
week and had to go out on his one day off, Sunday, to cover events, like awards
banquets and the like." John B.
McCue, former solicitor for Ford City Borough Council, said, "John was a
well-respect man. At the meetings we
would joke about whether to accept the secrretary's minutes or John's news
story." McCue knew Mikula for
years since they were neighbors in Ford City and while they both attended Pitt
at the same time. "John wrote
stories about the people of Ford City.
Someone should staple them together and make a book from them. His
stories captured the essence of the people and life in Ford City," he said
of Mikula's work. " John was a
kind man and a fair reporter. He was a
good husband and father and he was very active in the community," he
said. "He was one of the most
outstanding citizens of Ford City."
"I stopped in to see John last week and he was not well. He was in a weakened state, but I had no
idea he was close to death," said McCue. "He told me once to stop by
anytime and I did. I'm glad I got to
see him before he passed away."

Death Notices, Psak-- Carol A., 22, of ...
Charleroi, died Saturday, July 17, 1982, at 10:48 p.m. in Spencer Hospital,
Meadville, Pa., from injuries received in a boating accident on Conneaut Lake
earlier that day... Solemn Liturgy in Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church,
Charlelroi.--- Valley Independent, Monessen, PA, 19 July 1982.
District woman killed in lake boat crash:
Two women, including a 22-year-old Carroll
Twp. resident were killed Saturday night in a boating accident on Conneaut Lake
when the 50-foot ferry boat they were aboard with other members of a college sorority
was slammed in the darkness by a 17-foot cruiser. Killed in the accident were Carol A. Psak, ...of Charleroi,
and Carol Aiken, 19, of Reynoldsville.
In addition, 32 other persons were injured in the crash... Miss Psak ...
had graduated cum laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in May and was
employed as a systems analyst with Westinghouse Telecommunication Center of
Pittsburgh. The accident occurred
at 9:40 p.m. as 23 members and guests of IUP's two Delta Gamma sorority,
including Miss Psak and Miss Aiken, were aboard the Redwing, a steel-hulled
ferryboat that had just begun making its last run of the day from Conneaut Lake
Park. There were 37 people aboard
the 50-year-old ferryboat, which links local beaches, the town of Conneaut Lake
and the amusement park. The craft can
carry 50 passengers. The sorority sisters
were spending the weekend at the Conneaut Lake home of Lynn Remo when the group
decided to take the ferry to the popular amusement park. Ruth Riesenman, the sorority's faculty adviser, said the
gathering was "a reunion weekend.
It was open to our recent graduates.
It was a chance for them all to get together." ... Authorities were
trying to determine the 17-foot speedboat , occupied by three people, hit the
ferry. The sorority members were on the top deck of the craft when the accident
occurred. State Fish Commission
officials, who have jurisdiction in the case, were questioning witnesses and
examining the two craft in an effort to piece together the details of the
accident. "It was a very dark night,
no stars and no moon ," said Lloyd Holland, president of Conneaut Lake
Cruises, Inc., which owns the Redwing.
" It's always hard to see on the lake, but it seems to me you could
always pick up silouettes. "... The cruiser collided with the ferryboat
just forward of amidsips, according to authorities. Holland said the
ferryboat, piloted by Zane Teslik, 20, of Zelienople, 20, had running lights on
its bow, stern, and amidships... The rescue attempt was one of the largest in Crawford
County, according to the Meadville edition of the Times-News. Ambulances from six surrounding communities
rushed to the scene and the Crawford County Scuba Team assemblrd at Midway
Beasch and entered the water to search for victims... The ferryboats are a
Conneaut Lake tradition and have been part of of the resort life there since at
least the turn of the century. In the
1920's there were dancing boats on the Lake... Carol
A. Psak was graduated with high honors and first in her class in 1978 from the
Donora Campus of Ringgold High School. She
was born Feb. 29, 1960 in North Carleroi... She was a member of Holy Ghost
Byzantine Catholic Church Charleroi. Miss
Psak had been listed in "Who's Who in American Colleges and
Universities," and had been a University Senator, charter member of Delta
Gamma and a Phi Beta Lambda officer.
She also had an LIEP intenship, Pi Omega Pi Honorary and MENSA and had
been a residence hall counselor at IUP and a secretarial assistant in the
university's School of Business. Last
fall, she was Data Processing and Accounting student instructor at Altoona Area
School District...----- The Valley Independent, Monessen, PA, 19 July 1982.
