      13. Hannah4 Gann (Adam3, Samuel2, Johannes1) was born 1797 in Washington Co, TN, and died 1865 in Johnson Co, IL. She married (1) George Washington Massingill November 15, 1813 in Washington Co, TN, son of William Massingill. !March 1816 term of Washington County, TN Court Hannah Massengale brings a case for divorce a gainst her husband, George Massengale. Since Hannah was not yet twenty-one, she had to have a n adult stand with her. "Hannah Massengale by Pleasant Wallace, her next friend, v. George Ma ssengale."

!The minutes from the March 1816 Term show that a subpoena had been issued and returned, a pr oclamation made, and the defendant was called but "came not." This was on the fourth day of c ourt. On the ninth day of court, the case appeared again, indicating that the same thing happ ened. George was served again and failed to appear a second time. The court ordered that a su bpoena be issued for George's appearance for the "next term of the Court to answer this petit ion on the first Monday of September next [1816]. Otherwise, the Court would proceed exparte . The Court also directed that this Order be published four times in the Rogersville Gazette , a newspaper of the time published in nearby Rogersville, Tennessee.

!Several years later in 1822 George sued to recover the costs he had expended in fighting th e divorce. The Court levied these costs against Hannah and her new husband, Moses Nelson. "f i fa" issued March 1822 at Jonesborough against Hannah Massengil now Nelson in favor of Georg e Massengill. On Aug 12, 1822 in Jefferson County, TN J. Bradford, Sheriff, levied the fi f a on "an undivided moity or tract of land lying on the south side of french broad river on Mc guires creek adjoining the lands of Henry Parrott and others and after advertising accordin g to law offered for sale at the courthouse door in Dandridge on the ?? and not sold for th e want of bidders no other property found in my county" September 7, 1822. J. Bradford, Shf f of Jefferson Cty. The costs which George was trying to recover totaled $12.90. This effor t was unsuccessful, so George apparently never received the money.

!George served in the War of 1812. In the 3rd Tennessee Militia, he was in
combat situations in Mobile Bay and New Orleans. In 1820 George and Polly were living in Har din Co., Tn; in 1830 in Henderson Co. Years later, in answer to the call of Sam Houston fo r settlers to come to the Territory of Texas where land was free for those who desired to bec ome permanent homesteaders, Polly, George, and their ten children joined a wagon train of 10 1 people, all of whom were reportedly related by blood or marriage, and arrived in Nacogdoche s Territory in 1837. The records of the Nacogdoches County Board of Land Commissioners lis t George Washington Massengill and three of his sons, Isaac, Henry, and John, each being gran ted 1,280 acres of land by "Headright Certificates." The dates of issue extend from Decembe r 1837 to July 1845. In 1841, George and Polly moved to the Walker community (new Redland) wh ere he and his son, John, built a combined sawmill-gristmill on the creek four miles north o f Lufkin, Texas.
