Notes for George Washington Gann: From Joy Gann Brown, Hillsborough, NC. From Wm R Gann, 7406 Englewood Ln, Raytown, MO 64133-6913 (816) 353-7172. !Military record in the Adjutant's office states that George Gann deserted on 4 March, returned on 27 April, was fined $10 and then transferred the same day to Capt. Register's Company and served until the expiration of his service on Aug. 1, 1814. Apparently, the reason for the desertion of many men was the misunderstanding of time and service. Sometime before their arrival in the Creek Indian territory in Alabama, they were mustered in for another six months' term. Somehow this additional length of service was not clearly understood by members of this unit. In his bounty land application, George states that he was in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He may have been in the battle, but his participation was not noted in the extant military records. The Battle occurred on 27 Mar 1814 and lasted all day. Some 1,200 Creek warriers, under the leadership of Chief Menewa, had created a fortified position for themselves on a small peninsula of approximately 100 acres formed by a bend of the Tallapoosa River. Major General Andrew Jackson's forces, some 3,000 in number, were victorious against the Creek warriers, who refused to surrender and all but about 50 were killed. Afterwards, Gen. Jackson commented that "...the carnage was dreadful." This battle broke forever the military power of the southern Indians. Later that summer in August at Fort Jackson, the Creeks were forced to cede more than half of their lands in Alabama to the United States. Unfortunately, the friendly Creeks who fought gallantly against their "brothers" also lost their lands. On 14 Nov 1850 in Hamilton County, George applied for bounty land and gave his age as "about 66." His boyhood chum and lifelong friend, Moses Nelson, 53, was a witness for this application. Again on 26 March 1855 George Gann, aged 79, applied for additional bounty land. Moses A. Nelson signs as witness as he had to George's previous land transaction. |

Notes for William Gann: From Wm R Gann, 7406 Englewood Ln, Raytown, MO 64133-6913 (816) 353-7172. From Joy Gann Brown, Hillsborough, NC. !Enlisted 20 June 1813 "to serve during the War." He was described as "5 feet 8 inches tall with a light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He received his first wound in his right thigh in 1813 somewhere in the Territory of upper Ohio or Michigan while engaged in one of the many battles with the British. He participated in the Battle of Lundy's Lane, often called the "charge at Bridgewater" in Col. Miller's regiment against the troops of Britain's Lord Wellington on 25 July 1814. The five-hour battle of Lundy's Lane was described at the time by Col. James Miller as "one of the most desperately fought actions ever experienced in America." The Americans lost 850 men either killed, wounded or missing, the British 875. Even though the battle was a "draw," it halted American advances into Upper Canada. On 4 Sept. 1814 in the Battle of Erie (Fort Erie was located south of Niagra Falls), William received a severe wound, a shot in his right arm, which resulted in the amputation of his arm on 10 Sept. 1814 by hospital surgeon, Dr. Trowbridge of Rochester, New York. As a result of this war wound, he was honorably discharged on 24 Jan 1815 by Brig. General Henry Burback, Greenbush Cantonment. William received a pension with a "three-fourths disability" status. This new physical condition did not deter him in his quest for a life of adventure as a risk-taking pioneer and patriotic citizen. At the time of his discharge, his age was recorded as 18, hence a birth year of 1797. He returned home to Jonesborough, Washington Co., TN. On 13 Sept. 1815 he gave a power of attorney to Samuel Powell, Esq. to "procure and receive from such office, person or persons as should be legally authorized to grant the same, a warrant for the quantity of land to which I am entitled for the services rendered as a private in the Army of the U.S." He received 160 acres, bounty land warrant #2514. !William moved to Hardin Co, TN about 1819. Sometime in 1835, William, Ruth Ann and their small children left Tennessee in a wagon train commanded by David Crocket. At Clarksville, TX, Davey Crockett, wanting to go directly to San Antonio, gave command of the wagon train to William, who was then about 29 years old. The wagon train arrived in Nacogdoches Co on 1 Mar 1836 on the eve of Texas independence. Texas soon became a Republic under Sam Houston as the first president. |

Notes for Solomon Gann: From Bobbie Gann Bishop, 1404 W. Ave H, Lovington, NM 88260-5014. 5/14/94 !His brother-in-law, George Washington Massingill, was getting together a wagon train to go t o Texas to help Sam Houston with his fight against Mexico. Soloman and his family joined u p with George and sister, Mary Polly, and 100 other folks. Because of harsh winters in thei r part of the country, the group did not get started until the spring of 1837. They arrive d in Texas in the fall of 1837. The fight for independence from Mexico had been won by the c ourageous people of Texas, and they were ready to settle their state. The Republic of Texa s was generous with its most available natural resource, its public land. "Headright" grant s evolved to encourage immigration and also to reward native citizens. Heads of families wh o were living in Texas on Mar. 2, 1836 were eligible for grants of 4,605 acres. Those who im migrated from Mar. 1, 1836 to Oct. 1, 1837 could receive 1,280 acres, while those who immigra ted from Oct. 1, 1837 to Jan. 1, 1842 could be granted 640 acres, with sons 17 years of age r eceiving 320 acres. In Dec, 1837 Soloman Gann was granted 640 acres of land in what was the n Nacogdoches County. As head of family, George Massingill received 640 acres, also his marr ied son, Henry, 640 acres. So the Tennesseans settled in the Shawnee Prairie areas which lat er became a part of Angelina County. A son, Isaac, was born that December. It is said he wa s born in an Indian bark hut because there had not been time for the new settlers to build ho mes. The land was fertile and produced fruit, nuts, and wild game. In the 1850 census of An gelina County, Solomon is listed: age 52, a stackkeeper, Malinda age 38 and children Mary 17 , Nathan 13, Isaac 12, Matilda 10, John 8 and Samuel 6 months. Soloman came to Hamilton Count y to live along the Leon River. Soloman worked for James Kuykendall. In Aug. of 1884 at th e age of 86 Soloman's long journey was over and he was buried beside his wife Malinda. |
