Here's a quick sketch of the line: John Payne/Paine of Westmoreland Co., VA, got a land grant in June 1664 - the first known evidence of our line in North America. He was married to a woman named Millicent. His son named John was the next generation. He was married to a woman named Elizabeth. He also had a son named James, but I don't know of any descendants of James. He had a grandson named John, but I don't know of any descendants of that John. His grandson named William was the next generation in our line. He married Elizabeth Poindexter, which is apparently the reason Poindexter turned up as a given name later. William died by Sept. 1735 in Hanover Co., VA. His widow married Reuel Shrewsberry, which is another name that turned up as a given name - my direct ancestor Shrewsberry Payne was a son of Thomas Payne Sr. William and Elizabeth had moved from Westmoreland Co., VA, to Hanover Co., VA, in about 1722-23. Almost all records from that county have been lost or destroyed, so we don't know how many children of their marriage there were. Thomas Payne and William Payne showed up in Halifax Co., VA, in the late 1750s. They each named one of their sons Poindexter, apparently because that was Elizabeth's maiden name. Thomas named a son Shrewsberry, apparently because that was Thomas's stepfather's name. There were 3 men named Thomas Payne, 3 men named William Payne, and 3 men named John Payne in Halifax/Pittsylvania County at essentially the same time - apparently from at least 2 and perhaps 3 different lines of Paynes. Put that together with the lack of Hanover County records to show us who to look for in the generation following William and Elizabeth of Hanover County, and you've got a real puzzle. It looks as though 1 John, 1 Thomas and 1 William were sons of William and Elizabeth (Poindexter) Payne. You probably descend from one of the 3 John Paynes who were in Pittsylvania/Halifax - the one who died in 1781. Since your DNA matches that of others who descend from William and Elizabeth (Poindexter) Payne, your John was probably their son - and thus a brother of Thomas and William. =20 John (d. 1781) left a will naming sons William, Charles, Reuben, Samuel, Josah/Joseph, John, and maybe more that I don't recall off the top of my head. He may have had 4 sons that he didn't name in his will, since Phillip, Sylvester, Thomas and Jonathan all were sons of someone named John Payne of Pittsylvania Co., VA, and seemed to have been orphaned at about the time of his death - 3 of them were "bound out" to other people in 1782 to raise them. The sons of John named Charles and William went to Tennessee after the Rev. War to the area that became Hawkins County. A son of William named Poindexter went to TN with them. Another of William's sons, named Daniel, went to TN too, but I'm not sure when - he was with his uncle Thomas for a while in NC. It looks as though the sons of John (d. 1781) named Reuben, Samuel, perhaps Joseph, and John went to Georgia via NC. Thomas and his children, of course, went to GA via NC, too - arriving in 1784-5. The first "divide," then, is at that trio of men in Halifax/Pittsylvania who appear to have been sons of William and Elizabeth (Poindexter) Payne - John, William and Thomas. After that, the branches get numerous real fast. Hi Harold,

We are all descendants of John Payne born Abt. 1722 married to = Millicent...which puts us all in Lineage 2 on the DNA chart.

And you and I most probably belong to John Payne, Sr. from Pittsylvania = Co., VA, somehow Charles is relation to him.

I am sending Bob a copy of this because I think he can correct me if I = am wrong.
