ARCHCEPHUS (ARCHA) B.3 PARNELL (HENRY2, HENRY1) was born December 23, 1837 in North Carolina, and died September 23, 1887 in Cook Cemetery on Cane Creek, Perry County, Tennessee. He married (1) SALLIE A. WALLS, daughter of UNKNOWN. She was born February 13, 1843 in North Carolina, and died October 01, 1878 in Cook Cemetery on Cane Creek, Perry County, Tennessee. He married (2) TINNIE (TINA) SAUNDERS October 31, 1878 in Hickman County, Tennessee. She was born Unknown in Wayne County, Tennessee, and died Unknown in Riverside Cemetery Hohenwald, Tennessee. Notes for ARCHCEPHUS (ARCHA) B. PARNELL: The Cook Cemetery located on Cane Creek near the Old Enon Church has a square fence enclosing four graves. They are Archa Parnell (1837-1887), Sally Wall Parnell (1843-1887), and Molly Parnell (1862-1883), John R. Parnell (1869-1887). Little is known of Archa Parnell's early life. It can be stated with reasonable certainty that he was a sickly hunchback child with a sore leg. He had an Irish Brogue that may indicate a recent arrive from Ireland or acquisition of his speech from his parents. In the 1850 census of Humphreys County, there was a Henry, age 80, who lived on Blue Creek. His wife was 42 years of age. Both are listed as having been born in North Carolina. In this household lived Archephus, age 13. The writing was indistinct, could have been 18 o13, if it were 13, then this would place the birth of Archephus in 1837, which is the birth of our Archa. Archa lived in the household of David Rice Harris sometime after the census of 1850 until his marriage sometime in the late 1861. It was during this time that Archa because of his infirmities, became a trucker rather than a farmer. He hauled freight between the Beardstown stores and Nashville via Leepers Fork and Hillsboro which is on the Natchez Trace. Archa started working with Mr. Egbert Haywood Shepard and lived on his farm in the house on the right hand side of the road going up Cane Creek. Presumably all the children were born in this house on the Shepard farm. As with all pioneer families, life was hard and short for most people and the Parnell's were no exception. Sally Walls Parnell was 19 when her first child was born, and 33 years old when her seventh child was born. She was dead two years later, leaving a sickly hunchbacked husband age 41 and seven children: Molly (16), Samuel (12), Robert (10), E.H. (8), Clara (6), Elizabeth (4), and Egbert Haywood (2). They continued to live in the small house on the Shepard property. Archa married Tinnie Saunders from Wayne County sometime in 1879. The first child of this family was Donna, born 1880. A second child Fannie was born in 1883. The family broke up when the second wife was unable to handle the problems of two infants and five Parnell children. John had died of measles in 1887, and Mollie died in 1883. By this time, Sam Parnell had married Julia Duncan, this young couple reared little Egbert together with their own children. Mr. Moore in Centerville took Elizabeth, a teacher in Beardstown by the name of DePriest took Clara, and Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Shepard took E. H. (Dick) to live in their house. Fannie Parnell Arnold and her mother Tina Saunders Parnell are buried in the Riverside Cemetery near Hohenwald, Tennessee. Donna Parnell Lynch is buried in Salem Cemetery in Wayne County. Note on Shepard, Egbert Haywood: Egbert was born in Wilson County, TN on 12 October 1825. He was 1 of 8 children born to William Shepard and Jane Britewell. William and Jane were both born and married in VA. they came to Perry Co in 1829 and settled on Cane Creek. When Egbert was 18, he married Naomi Wilburn of Perry County. She died 17 November 1879. They were the parents of 6 children, 5 living at the time of the writing. On 17 November 1881, he married Mary Jane Smith. They were the parents of Samuel Clinton. In 1849, Egbert located on his 1100 acre farm near the junction of the Buffalo River and Cane creek. In November, 1862, Egbert enlisted and served in the 10th TN Confederate Cavalry until his capture which took place while raising a battalion for this regiment. Afterwards he continued farming and then became involved in merchandising in February, 1882 at Beardstown. Formerly a Whig, at the time of the writing he had become a Democrat.
