Notes for T
ISDALE H. HOWARD:
Letter written by Tisdale from Durhamville, NY on 2-12-1862
I've your letter of last week & in answer I would say: my health is some better. I have to cough much yet & am not able to do anything of the work kind. As to our business matters: I wish to do right. If I do not have a will, all will come in for an equal share, now John has had two hundred & twenty dollars in money & he gave his notes for $39 to his hands on the boat & sign my name to them. I told them to go to New York and put an attachment on the boat. They did so and had to pay $51. I scolded him on that and he replied he had a right so to do: when Harry came home he said let him go, so I withdrew: there remains a claim against me of probably $130 on that boat which will have to be paid or have a lawsuit. So you see John has had more than $360 and now George Low offers to take the property and pay the debts and maintain me and pay the funeral charges and fulfill a will in the following order:
to you we send $25 sometime in the ensuing summer that is to pay your expense down here last fall. Then $200 after my decease and $200 to Justin V., $100 to Desdimona A. and $100 to Harriet, $100 to each of Charle's children and $300 to Edwin and to Harry $600 and as much more as he can afford after setting the debts. Elizabeth C. is to have all the household furniture. This is about as I have made up my mind to do. Now if you can get up a will that will be any more just or equal please write soon. If you are satisfied and think that is about right send them. Note is and we will send the $25 as soon as convenient. If I have wirtten so you can read and understand my meaning. You think it proper for you to come down here, you had better come soon for life is very uncertain at best. Old Mr. Frazee was buried last week and George Williams last week and John Newcomb is but just alive, and now because my letter I am tired and have the headache and I have had more of tha complaint in three weeks than I ever had in all my life and now may your conduct for the remaining part of your life be (?) your conscience shall approve and merit the approbation of Heaven. This is the best wisk of your friend & Father.
