More About SIR KNIGHT THOMAS GARDNER: Fact 3: New England Families Gen. & Mem. by Wm. R. Cutter pub. 1914 Child of SIR KNIGHT THOMAS GARDNER is: 2. i. GEORGE2 GARDNER, b. 1601, England; d. 1679, Newport, RI. Generation No. 2 2. GEORGE2 GARDNER (THOMAS1)1 was born 1601 in England2, and died 1679 in Newport, RI3. He married (1) HERODIUS LONG4 Abt. 1642 in Newport, RI5. She was born Abt. 1620, and died Unknown in Newport, RI6. He married (2) LYDIA BALLOU7 Abt. 1660, daughter of ROBERT BALLOU and SUSANNAH. She was born Abt. 1640 in Newport, RI, and died Bef. 1722 in Portsmouth, RI. Notes for GEORGE GARDNER: Ref Cutter's: George Gardner, believed to have been the son of Sir Thomas Gardiner, knight, was born in England and died in Kings county Rhode Island. He was admitted an inhabitant of Aquidneck, RI, September 1, 1638, and in 1640 was present at a general court of election. He married (first) about 1640, Herodias (Long) Wickes, who declared that when she was between thirteen and fourteen years of age she was married in London to John Wickes, without the knowledge of her friends. Soon after they reached Rhode Island, he deserted her, going to New Amsterdam, or, as she expressed it "to the Dutch", taking with him most of her property, left to her by her mother. Her marriage to George Gardner was rather irregular in form consisting in their going before some Friends and declaring themselves husband and wife. She refused to take the usual ceremony, as she was a member of the Society of Friends and was so bound to her religion that she cheerfully waked from Newport to Boston to receive a whipping at the post because of her religious beliefs, carrying a young child in her arms the whole distance. According to her own account, George neglected to provide for her numerous family adequately. It may have been her pressing needs, and it may have been the superior attractions of John Porter, with his great wealth of lands (he being one of the original Pettaquamscutt purchasers) and his promise to provide for her children, that awakened her religious scruples about the legality of her marriage with George Gardner. At any rate, she petitioned the general asembly for a divorce, which was granted, thus proving the legality of her marriage. She then married John Porter, who faithfully kept his promise, giving large farms to each of her sons, and possibly her daughters, for the land of John Watson, who married two of her daughters, joined the Gardner lands. Ref. NEGHR, the first known divorce in Rhode Island was granted early in the 1640's to John Hicks of Newport and his wiffe Herodias Long. In a petition of 1665, Herodiahs stated that "not long after my coming to Rhode Island, there happened a difference between the said Hickes and myself so that the authority that then was under grace, saw cause to part us..." Hicks removed to Long Island never to return and Herodias lived with George Gardner for twenty years without benefit of civil marriage. After the death of George, Lydia married William Hawkins, of Providence, and went to that town to live, taking with her the five young children she had by Gardner. The following is from the State records of Rhode Island: 1638. George Gardner was admitted an inhabitant of the Island of Aquidneck. 1639. He was freeman. 1641-2. He was Senior Sergeant. 1644. He was Ensign. 1660. George Gardner with others was witness to a deed given by T. Socho, an Indian, to William Vaughn, Robert Stanton, John Fairfield, Hugh Mosieck, James Longbottom, all of Newport, Rhode Island, of land comprising what is now the city of Westerly, R. I. 1662. He was commissioner from Newport at court held at Warwick, R. I., on October 28. 1668. He was made overseer of the will of Robert Ballou, his father-in-law. 1671. Ben (an abbreviation no doubt for Benony) Gardner, Henry Gardner, George Gardner, Nicholas Gardner were among the list of inhabitants of the Pettaquomscut Plantation. 1673. George Gardner was Juryman. It is believed that the descendants of George Gardner are more numerous than those of any other Gardner who settled in Colonial New England. All the sons of George and Herodias Gardner settled in the part of Narragansett lying now mostly in South Kingston, Washington Co., RI. They all became large land owners and wealthy men. BENONI3 GARDNER (GEORGE2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1643 in Newport, RI, and died 1731. He married MARY. She was born 1645, and died 16 November 1729 in Portsmouth, RI. Notes for BENONI GARDNER: Ref. The Gardiners: In 1727, when he had become a "sojourner at Portsmouth" he gave his age, in testimony, as ninety and upward. But this would give the date of his birth as 1637, before his mother was left by her first husband. Consequently it must be an error, and accounts for the family traditions of the great age attained by these men. In 1671 he took the oath of allegiance, and had been married previously to this time, as his son William was born this year. September 18, 1705, he and wife Mary deeded to son Nathaniel one hundred acres, "being west half of farm," where Benoni then dwelt, and on the same day deeded son Stephen dwelling house, orchard, etc. In 1713 he and wife Mary deeded land to son Isaac. November 17, 1705, he, Henry, George, William and Nicholas Gardner, and John Watson, all of Kingstown, and Mary, Joan, Tabitha, Elizabeth and Hannah Gardner, and Rebecca Watson, their wives sold John Potter 410 acres for 150 pounds; said sum to be paid to Thomas Hicks, of Flushing, Long Island. She was born Abt. 1662, and died Aft. 1696. Notes for LT. SAMUEL GARDNER: Ref "History of Swansea," Lt. Samuel Gardner of Newport on Oct. 1, 1687 for L250 in silver, bought of George Lawton of Freetown, then in the Colony of New Plymouth, a farm of 400 acres, situated i n the part of Old Freetown, which, in 1803, became the township of Fall River. Soon after this purchase, Lt. Gardner moved to Freetown, and the next year, 1688, was made Selectman of the town. He held this office for three years; served as Assessor for two years, Town Clerk for three yearsr, ad Treasurer for one. He represented the town once in the Colonial Legislature of New Plymouth, once in the Province of the Massachusetts Bay, and was active and efficient as a member of the Town's Council of War. On Nov. 14, 1693, Samuel Gardner sold his Freetown farm, and on Dec. 30, 1693, bought with Ralph Chapman, for L1700, the neck of land, then owned by Rev. Ebenezer Brenton, now know as Gardner's Neck, South Swansea. On the 14th of the following February, Gardner and Chapman divided their purchase. Gardner receiving the southern part. What was known as the Stoddard tract in the town of Pomfret, CT remained for many years in the hands of its non-resident owners. Samuel was among the first settlers of the southwest corner of Pomfret. By 1720 about twenty families had gathered in the south part of Pomfret. Samuel was made ensign of the military company formed in 1724 in Canada Parish, Windham, CT. More About SAMUEL GARDNER: Fact 3: Rep.
