He married (3) ELIZABETH BAILEY3 26 June 1654 in Barnstable, MA4. She was born Abt. 1627 in Barnstable, MA, and died 09 February 1683/84 in Bristol, RI. Notes for JOHN FINNEY: Ref "Finney Families", according to Plymouth, MA records, John Finney was in that town as early as 1630 with his mother, his brother Robert, and his sister Catherine. Tradition has it that the father died while crossing the sea. No definite information has been found as to the boats upon which they arrived or their place of birth in England. Some investigators claim that the family came from Wales and others that they were from Pontypool in Monmouthsire, a county which once belonged to Wales but was taken over by Henry VIII to become a part of England early in the 16th century. John Finney probably lived in Plymouth for several years; his two sons by his first wife were born there. He next moved to Barnstable, MA where seven of his children were born, and eventually to Bristol, RI. He had seven sons. The eldest, John Jr., settled in Barnstable and founded what is known as the Barnstable branch of the family; his descendants have usually spelled their surname "Phinney". Josiah made his home in Plymouth and thus established the Plymouth line. Jonathan, Jeremiah, and Joshua all went to Rhode Island with their father, and their descendants form the so-called Bristol branch. The Phinney spelling is sometimes found in the Plymouth and Bristol lines also, especially in the later generations. We do not know the name of Mrs. Finney. It was possibly Catharine; but she was always known by her neighbors and in the records, as "Mother" Finney, by which kindly name her posterity will know her. Her children were: 1. Catharine, born in England, married Gabriel Fallowell. He died at Plymouth, December 28, 1667, aged eighty years. Their daughter, Ann Fallowell married July 22nd, 1637, Thomas Pope, of Plymouth and Dartmouth. Ann died before May, 1646. 2. Robert, born in 1600, died at Plymouth, January 7, 1688. He married, 1641, Phebe Ripley, born in 1619, died December 9, 1710. No children. Nephew, Josiah, appointed to administer estate September 18, 1712. 3. John, born in England. JOHN FINNEY. John Finney, son of Mother Finney, was born in England, came to America with her, on or before 1631, and settled in Plymouth, Mass., before 1631. He married for his first wife, Christian (???) who died at Barnstable, Cape Cod, Mass., September 9, 1649. John moved to Barnstable before 1649, and was admitted inhabitant of Bristol, Rhode Island, September, 1681. A deed at Taunton, Mass., dated 1702-3, shows him living in Bristol County, Mass., at that time, probably near Swansea. He married second wife, Abigail Coggan, widow of Henry Coggan, June 10, 1653. She died childless. He married third wife, June 26, 1654, Elizabeth Bailey, who was buried in Bristol, Rhode Island, February 9, 1683-4. Children, first wife, Christian: 1. MILITARY: "He served in King George's War, 1774, under command of his brother-in-law Capt. Simeon Potter on privateer 'Prince Charles of Lorraine.'" "Mark Anthony, the younger son, educated in a French school at Guadaloupe, was brought some time previous to 1744, as a young man of about 17, by Capt. Simeon Potter in one of his ships to Bristol, R. I., where he settled, marrying Capt. Potter's sister Abigail. 'Speaking several languages he became Capt. Potter's clerk, in which capacity he sailed several voyages.' He wrote the name with the French contraction, D'Wolf, as the writer has assumed his father had done in Guadaloupe." Bristol VR lists negro child of Capt. De Wolf's drowned May 28, 1767, age 7 yrs. New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Volume IV (V) Captain Mark Anthony de Wolf, son of Charles (2) and Margaret (Potter) de Wolf, was born November 8, 1726, and died September 17, 1793, in Bristol, Rhode Island. He became acquainted with Captain Simeon Potter, who made many voyages to the West Indies, and became a warm friend of de Wolf. The latter accompanied Captain Potter to his home in Bristol, where he settled before 1744, and became a noted navigator. He was educated in a French school at Guadaloupe, and was familiar with several languages, thus becoming very valuable to his employer, Captain Simeon Potter, with whom he sailed on many voyages. In 1744, immediately following the outbreak of the war between England and France, they sailed from Bristol on the ship "Prince Charles of Lorraine," and on December 22 of that year surprised and captured the French settlement of Oyapoc, in French Guiana, making heavy reprisals upon the inhabitants of that place. Later, de Wolf settled at Bristol, where his house was burned by the British, in 1778. This stood at the south corner of Hope and Burton streets, in that town. After the destruction of his home, by which he was greatly impoverished, he removed to a farm in Swansea, Massachusetts, and engaged in farming. By his industry he largely recovered his fallen fortunes, and some years before his death, in 1793, he returned to Bristol. His sons became eminent in commerce and wealthy men of Bristol, where they visited in youth under different circumstances. When the youngest was but sixteen years old they travelled on foot from Swansea to Bristol, where they shipped on board a vessel belonging to their uncle, Simeon Potter, and thenceforward were always identified with commerce. Mark Anthony de Wolf married, August 26, 1744, Abigail Potter, born February 2, 1726, in Bristol, daughter of Hopestill and Lydia Potter, and sister of Captain Simeon Potter. She survived her husband more than fifteen years, dying February 7, 1809. Children: Charles, mentioned below; Mark Anthony, born January 9, 1747; Margaret, September 9, 1748; Abigail, 1750, died young; Simon, November 12, 1753; Abigail, July 1, 1755; Samuel Potter, baptized June 19, 1757; Nancy Potter, born March 3, 1759; John, May 17, 1760; Lydia, May 29, 1761; William, December 19, 1762; James, March 8, 1764; Levi, April 8, 1766; Mary and Elizabeth (twins), born and died in 1768. CHARLES DE WOLF, b. 25 February 1744/45; d. 20 August 1820. Notes for CHARLES DE WOLF: New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Volume IV VI) Captain Charles (3) de Wolf, eldest child of Mark Anthony and Abigail (Potter) de Wolf, was born February 26, 1745, in Bristol, and was among the most distinguished citizens of that town, where he died in 1820. He was a master mariner, engaged in the West India trade, and became very wealthy for his day. He belonged to the Jeffersonian party, then called Republican, and was one of the first signers of a protest addressed to the pastor of the Congregational church in Bristol (of which he was a member), against the political sermons delivered in the church. Because of this disaffection he and many others subsequently united with St. Michael's Protestant Episcopal Church of Bristol. He subscribed one hundred and twenty-one dollars to the erection of the first public library in that town, in 1798, and also gave one hundred dollars toward the erection of a building, completed in 1809, the first floor of which was to be the property of the town as a free school forever. One-half the expense of this building was borne by the Masonic fraternity, which used the upper floor as a meeting place. He and his son General George de Wolf were the principal owners of the full rigged ship "Juno" of 250 tons, which sailed from Bristol with a crew of twenty-six men, August 13, 1804, to trade along the northwestern coast of the United States. His residence was on Thames street, at the foot of Constitution street, with terraced garden sloping down to the shore, one of the most magnificent of its day, the walls covered with imported paper. The summer house which stood in the garden is still preserved, and graces another garden in Bristol at the present day, the home of his descendants. In the course of time the house was moved from its location to make way for a saw mill, and was converted into tenements for the employees of the mill. It was finally destroyed by fire. Captain de Wolf married (first) April 28, 1771, in Bristol. Mary Tyler, who died June 19, 1786, a daughter of Rev. Barnabas and Martha Tyler, of Bristol. He married (second) June 3, 1789, Elizabeth Rogerson, who bore him three daughters: Lucia, Eliza and Sophia. He married (third) Abigail Greene, who left no issue. Children of the first marriage: Charles, died in Cuba, 1834; William, died unmarried; Martha; Abby, born 1777; George, mentioned below. The intellectuality of the de Wolf family seems to be in the descendants of this Charles de Wolf. All of his descendants are very prosperous and several of them are distinguished, as Senator Le Baron Bradford Colt and Colonel Samuel Pomeroy Colt, of Bristol, Rhode Island. Charles de Wolf himself was a distinguished man and he is well known in the annals of Rhode Island, during our revolution and the war of 1812, he taking an active part. He was an intimate friend of Governor Bradford and General Knox. General Knox visited him in Bristol and Charles de Wolf returned his visit. There are still in the family several pieces of silver-ware that General Knox gave Charles de Wolf. He must have become acquainted with Washington during his visit to Bristol to consult with Governor Bradford. New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Volume IV (VII) General George de Wolf, eldest child of Charles (3) and Mary (Tyler) de Wolf, was born June 15, 1778, died June 7, 1844, in Bristol. He was a ship owner and merchant, and also engaged as a planter in Cuba, where he employed many slaves, and became one of the wealthy citizens of Bristol. Through reverses he lost much of his fortune, but was always respected and esteemed by his contemporaries. He was a brigadier-general in command of the First Brigade of Rhode Island troops, composed of Newport and Bristol county men, in 1818-19-20-21, and was major-general in command of state troops in 1822-23-24-25. He is said to have been among the most handsome men in military forces, making a splendid figure on horseback. His homestead, "Linden Place," at Bristol, was constructed in 1810 at a cost of sixty-five thousand dollars. It is still standing, the finest residence in the central portion of the city, with a long approach of marble pavement, a fine portico and lofty Corinthian columns, and an old-fashioned balustrade of intricate pattern surrounding the roof. Here, in 1817, General de Wolf entertained President Monroe. This is now occupied by his grandson, Samuel Pomeroy Colt, son of Christopher (2) and Theodora Goujand (de Wolf) Colt, the latter a daughter of General George de Wolf, born 1820, died 1901. General de Wolf married, October 17, 1804, Charlotte Patten Goodwin, born November 11, 1786, died June 5 1857, daughter of Henry and Mary (Bradford) Goodwin (see Goodwin VI). Children: George Buckmaster, mentioned below; Henry of Saxony, in 1423 became a favorite at the Saxon Court, and was created a Baron in 1427. He then changed his name from the French to the German, and was known thereafter as "de Wolf." His direct descendant, Maximillian de Wolf, founded the Belgian branch of the family, and from him, also, descended the de Wolfs of Holland, Prussia and Livonia. 41. iii. His father, Simon DeWolf, and his uncle Mark Anthony, older brothers of Captain Jim, were lost at sea while John, an only son, was an infant in arms. Forced thus to shift for himself while still a boy, he went to sea at thirteen, and at twenty-four, having returned in 1804 from a series of voyages as chief mate...was offered the command of the 'Juno", a fine ship of about two hundred and fifty tons burden...The voyage was of a sort in which the young New England shipmasters were distinguishing themselves, but it was unique in two of its sequels--Norwest John's overland crossing of Siberia on his way home via St. Petersburg, and the narrative of it all which in his old age he wrote and published (1861) under the title "A Voyage to the North Pacific and a Journey through Siberia more than Half a Century ago." The performance of the 'Yankee' contributed both to the winning of the War of 1812 and to the enrichment of James DeWolf, chief owner of the little privateer...Since he possessed the modern businessman's imagination he extended his chief shipping interest by ventures into whaling and commerce with China; foreseeing the future of cotton manufacturing in New England, he established the Arkwright Mills in Coventry, Rhode Island, as early as 1812, and owned and directed them until his death twenty five years later; in Bristol he practiced agriculture on an extensive scale, as also on several plantations in Cuba; and like many later businessmen in politics, he played for many years an important part in the government of his town and state. Nearly every year for more than twenty years before 1821--as again for eight more terms before his death in 1837--he represented Bristol in the Rhode Island legislature, and was Speaker of the House in that body for the second time when in 1820 he was elected to the United States Senate. Men," Governor Dimond went to Cuba in early life and there lived for some years. Later he became United States consul at Port au Prince and afterward held the same position at Vera Cruz, Mexico. His thorough knowledge of the country and government, and s well of the language, on the breaking out of the war between Mexico and the United States, made him of great service to his country. It is stated that 'when the expedition against Vera Cruz was planned he was summoned to Washington, where his accurate memory quickly supplied the greatly needed chart of the Mexican harbor.' It was his intention to have been an eye-witness of the bombardment of the place, but on leaving Havana, en-route, the vessel in which he embarked was wrecked and he did not reach the place of his destination until the day afterr the bombardment. For his valuable services, and because of his being so beloved and respected by the inhabitants, he, having reached the harbor in time, was assigned the honor of entering the city with the victorious American army and acted as the official interpreter. He was appointed collector of the captured city, and the U.S. government, in recognition for his services and great kindness to Texas prisoners, awarded him a tract of land. During his earlier life for a time he resided in New Orleans. Returning in later years to his native town, he was elected lieutenant-governor of Rhode Island from 1853 to 1854. On the resignation of Gov. Philip Allen, Mr. Dimond became his successor for the unexpired part of his term of service. Gov. Dimond later becme interested in the building of the Southern Pacific railroad and was president of the company which had started the enterprise. He passed his declining years in his beautiful hom, one of the former houses of the De Wolf family, and which is still the home of one of Gov. Dimond's daughters, the wife of Col. Samuel Norris. REF. N.E. FAM. GEN. & MEM. VII) Francis More, second son of Captain Royal and Elizabeth (Martin) Dimond, was born June 8, 1796, in Bristol. In early life he resided for a time in New Orleans, whence he went to Cuba and remained there several years. He was appointed United States consul at Port Au Prince, and afterward held the same position at Vera Cruz, Mexico. During his long residence in the West Indies he had become thoroughly familiar with the language spoken by the natives, and gained a thorough knowledge of their government, and on the outbreak of the war between Mexico and the United States, was of great service to his native country. When the expedition against Vera Cruz was planned, he was summoned to Washington, where his accurate memory afforded the greatly needed chart of the Mexican harbor. It was his intention to be an eye witness of the bombardment of the place, but the vessel on which he sailed from Havana was wrecked, and did not reach Vera Cruz until the day after the bombardment. He was assigned the honor of entering the city with the victorious American army, and acted as official interpreter. He was esteemed and respected by the inhabitants of the city, and his usefulness was thereby much enhanced. He was appointed collector of revenues at the captured city, and the United States government, in recognition of his service and great kindness to Texas prisoners, awarded him a tract of land. Returning to his native town, he was elected lieutenant-governor of Rhode Island for 1853 and 1854. On the resignation of Governor Philip Allen, Mr. Dimond became his successor for the unexpired term of service. Later Governor Dimond became interested in the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was president of the company engaged in that enterprise.
