Descendants of Thomas Richardson Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS1 RICHARDSON was born Abt. 1570, and died Bet. 1633 - 1634 in Westmill, Herts, England. He married KATHERINE DUXFORD. She was born Abt. 1565, and died Abt. 1631. Notes for THOMAS RICHARDSON: Ancestors of President Franklin Pierce. Child of THOMAS RICHARDSON and KATHERINE DUXFORD is: 2. i. EZEKIEL2 RICHARDSON, b. Abt. 1604, Westmill, Herts, England; d. 21 October 1647, Woburn, MA. Generation No. 2 2. EZEKIEL2 RICHARDSON (THOMAS1)1 was born Abt. 1604 in Westmill, Herts, England, and died 21 October 1647 in Woburn, MA1. He married SUSANNA Abt. 1625. She was born Abt. 1604, and died 16 September 1681 in Woburn, MA. Notes for EZEKIEL RICHARDSON: Ref. Richardson Memorial: After the death of Ezekiel Richardson, his widow Susanna married Henry Brooks; of Woburn, as we learn from sundry conveyances of land. For instance: Susanna Richardson (now Brooks), widow of Ezekiel Richardson, quitclaimed, March 23, 1655, thirty-five acres of land in Charlestown to Thomas Moulton and John Greenland. [Midd. Deeds, ii. 36.] Again: March 27, 1657. Samuel Richardson, brother of Ezekiel Richardson, now deceased, quitclaims forty acres of land in Woburn, on the side towards Reading, to my sister Susanna Richardson, now Brooks, during her lifetime, and then to my cousin [nephew] Theophilus Richardson. This land is described as bounded south by land of Samuel Richardson (himself), north by land of our brother Thomas Richardson, west by a running brook,(*) east by the common, i. e. by the common unappropriated land. [Midd. Deeds, ii. 72.] And again: Dec. 13, 1659. "We, Henry Brooks and Susanna Brooks, resign one-half of Ezekiel Richardson's house and lands." [Midd. Deeds, ii. 154.] This Henry Brooks was formerly of Concord, and while a resident there was made freeman, March 14, 1639. He is noticed in the Town Records of Woburn as an inhabitant, and a proprietor of land there, near Horn Pond, Jan. 10, 1652. He was one of the selectmen of Woburn, 1669. His wife Susanna died Sept. 15, 1681. He died April 12, 1683. He had children by a former wife, John, Timothy, Isaac, and Sarah. (*)This running brook must be the Aberjona River, on which the mills are in Winchester We come now to the principal subject of this volume, the posterity of the three brothers, Ezekiel, Samuel, and Thomas Richardson, who, with four others, laid the foundations of Woburn, in 1641. Ezekiel Richardson was a man of great respectability and worth. His name often occurs on the Charlestown records. He was, in 1633, appointed by the General Court a constable, then an office of much responsibility. In the following years, he was appointed by the town on several important committees. He was one of the first board of selectmen in Charlestown, chosen Feb. 10, 1634-5; also in 1637, 1638, 1639. He was a deputy or representative of that town in the General Court, chosen Sept. 2, 1634, and also the following year, 1635. In 1637, a lot of land was granted to him on "Misticke Side," or Malden; also to each of his brothers, of whom more in the sequel. He was a follower of Ann Hutchinson and John Wheelwright in the Antinomian Controversy of 1637, as were most of the members of the Boston church, and was one of the eighty or more persons who signed the Remonstrance in Mr. Wheelwright's favor, presented to the General Court on the ninth of March in that year.(*) At the session of the General Court held in November following, he and several others desired that their names might be erased from that paper, which the Court had judged to be of seditious tendency. Thus acknowledging his fault, he was exempted from the censure inflicted by the Court; in other words, he was not disarmed, as were nearly all of the Remonstrants. It is creditable to his memory that he was willing to abandon an enterprise in which he had conscientiously, but unwisely, embarked. ESTATE: In 1635 Ezekiel Richardson surrendered back to the town five acres of land Mystic Side [ChTR 14]. In the same year he was granted five shares of hay ground, which was increased to six shares [ChTR 19, 20]. On 24 October 1636 the town of Charlestown "agreed to allow Ezek[ie]ll Richeson 2 acres of ground besides the two due to him, to make & keep two sufficient gates for the highway between Mr. Mayhew's & New Towne, & the highway to have 6 pole in breadth" [ChTR 23]. On 3 March 1636/7 "Goodman Ezek[ie]ll Richeson had ½ a cow's grass appointed by Tho[mas] Squire" [ChTR 26]. Ezekiel Richardson had five acres of land Mystic Side in 1637, and also four and three-quarter cow commons [ChTR 27, 33]. On 23 April 1638 he had Mystic Side allotments of 35, 85 and 5 acres [ChTR 36]. On 30 December 1638 he had 6½ cow commons in the stinted common [ChTR 42]. In the 1638 Charlestown Book of Possessions "Ezechell Richardson" held thirteen parcels of land: three acre homestead in High Field; one acre meadow at north end of aforesaid three acres; one half acre meadow in High Field; one acre meadow on northeast side of Gibbon's Field (which "he bought of William Nash to whom at first it fell by lot"); one acre arable land in East Field; two acres meadow bounded to the south on Cambridge Field and to the north on Gibbon's River (later annotation: "sold to Thomas Brigden"); six acres meadow in Mystic Field; five acres woodland in Mystic Field; thirty-five acres woodland in Mystic Field; three acres meadow "lying to the northward of Mount Prospect") ninety acres of land in Water Field; six and a half milch cow commons (four and three quarters granted to him, one and a quarter bought of William Nash, and a half bought of George Whitehand); and four acres arable land in Line Field [ChBOP 3-4]. In his will, dated 20 July 1647 and proved 1 June 1648, "Ezekiell Richardson of Woebourne" appointed "my wife Susanna and my eldest son Theophilus joint executors"; and bequeathed to "Josias my son £30" at twenty-one years of age; to "James my son £30" at twenty-one years of age; to "Phebe my daughter £30" at "twenty years of age or within six months after the day of her marriage"; if any of these three should die before they come of age, the legacies be shared among the survivors; in case "my son Theophilus die before he shall accomplish one and twenty years of age, then his portion shall be equally divided to my other children"; discharged demands against "my brother Samuell Richardson"; to "my brother Thomas Richardson, his son Thomas, 10s."; overseers Edward Converse and John Mousall of Woburn, if either of these die, then the survivor with the consent of Thomas Carter, pastor of the church in Woburn, to choose a replacement overseer; 30s. to each overseer; residue to my executors, "provided that my wife may peacably enjoy her habitation in the house so long as she shall live" [SPR Case #72]. The inventory of the estate of Ezekiell Richardson was taken 18 November 1647 and totalled £190 6s. 6d., with no real estate included [SPR Case #72]. On 6 March 1649/50 Edward Converse confirmed to the heirs of Ezekiel Richardson an earlier sale of twelve acres of meadow & upland in Woburn [MLR 2:71]. On 27 March 1651 Samuel Richeson of Woburn "having formerly sold unto Ezekill Richeson my brother (who is since deceased) forty acres of arable & meadow land" in Woburn, confirms the same to "my sister Susanna Brookes (who was the wife of my deceased brother Ezekill Richeson" [MLR 2:72]. On 23 March 1654/5 "Susanna Richeson now Brookes formerly the wife of Ezek: Richeson" confirmed a sale made eight years earlier by "Ezekill Richardson & Sussanna Richardson my wife" to Thomas Moulton and John Greenland of thirty-five acres of land in Woburn [MLR 2:36]. On 13 December 1659 "Henry Brookes & Susanna Brookes of Woburn," in accordance with an award of the court, deeded to Theophilus Richardson the right and title they had in "the moiety or half part of the housing & land of Ezekiell Richardson of Woburn aforesaid, by executorship or otherwise" [MLR 2:154]. BIRTH: By about 1604 (based on estimated date of marriage and chronology of his siblings), son of Thomas and Katherine (Duxford) Richardson [Sarah Hildreth Anc 25-28]. DEATH: Woburn 21 October 1647. MARRIAGE: By 1632 Susanna _____. She married (2) by 27 March 1651 Henry Brooks [Sarah Hildreth Anc 30, citing MLR 2:36, 72, 154]. ASSOCIATIONS: Samuel Richardson and Thomas Richardson, brothers of Ezekiel, arrived in New England by 1635; Francis Wyman and John Wyman, sons of Ezekiel Richardson's sister Elizabeth, also came to New England [Sarah Hildreth Anc 25-27]. COMMENTS: "Ezech[ie]ll Richeson" was admitted as an inhabitant of Charlestown in 1630 [ChTR 5] and appeared in the lists of inhabitants of 9 January 1633/4 and January 1635/6 [ChTR 10, 15]. On 15 November 1637 Ezekiel Richardson was one of eight Charlestown men who admitted their error in signing the petition in favor of Wheelwright and who were permitted to erase their names from that document [MBCR 1:209]. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1876 John Adams Vinton published a comprehensive genealogy of the descendants of the three Richardson brothers [The Richardson Memorial, Comprising a Full History and Genealogy of the Posterity of the Three Brothers, Ezekiel, Samuel, and Thomas Richardson ... (Portland, Maine, 1876)]. In 1903 Walter Kendall Watkins published the data on the English origin of the Richardsons [NEHGR 57:298-300], and this material was incorporated in Walter Goodwin Davis's treatment of the family [Sarah Hildreth Anc 25-31]. Generation No. 3 3. JOSIAH3 RICHARDSON (EZEKIEL2, THOMAS1)1 was born 07 November 1635 in Charlestown, Mdlsx, MA, and died 22 June 1695 in Chelmsford, Mdlsx, MA. He married REMEMBRANCE UNDERWOOD 06 June 1659 in Concord, MA, daughter of WILLIAM UNDERWOOD and SARAH. She was born 25 February 1639/40 in Concord, MA, and died 20 February 1718/19 in Chelmsford, Mdlsx, MA. Notes for JOSIAH RICHARDSON: Ref. Richardson Memorial: CAPTAIN JOSIAH RICHARDSON,2 brother of the preceding, and second son of Ezekiel Richardson,1 one of the founders of Woburn; baptized in Charlestown, Nov. 7, 1635; married at Concord, by Capt. Simon Willard of that place, June 6, 1659, to REMEMBRANCE UNDERWOOD, born at Concord, Feb. 25, 1639-40, daughter of William and Sarah Underwood of that place. He and his brother James Richardson2 went to reside in Chelmsford as early as 1659, which, as just noted, was the year of his marriage. William Underwood, his wife's father, went in 1654, at the very beginning of that plantation.(*) (*) The origin of Chelmsford may be traced to a petition presented to the General Court of the colony in 1652, signed by about twenty persons--ten of them citizens of Concord, and as many more from Woburn--for liberty to examine, with a view to settlement, a tract of land lying on the west side of Concord River. The request being granted, and the petitioners being joined by about as many others, making thirty-nine in all, desirous of erecting a new plantation, they proceeded, the following year, to ask of the legislature a grant of land, bordering upon the Merrimack River, near to Pawtucket Falls, where is now the city of Lowell. They requested that the said tract of land might begin, on the Merrimack, at a neck of land next to Concord River [in the present territory of Lowell] and run up by said river south and west into the country, so as to make up six miles square. This would include the whole of Chelmsford and Lowell and part of Westford. About the same time, the Rev. John Eliot, as agent and trustee for the Indians under his spiritual care, asked the General Court for a grant near the Pawtucket and Wamesit Falls, for the exelusive use of the Indians in that neighborhood. The Court granted both petitions, and ordered both an Indian and an English plantation to be laid out. It was made a condition in the latter case, that within two years from the date of the act--May 18, 1653--at least twenty families should settle upon the tract so granted, so as to be in a condition to enjoy the institutions of religion. Capt. Simon Willard, of Concord, and Capt. Edward Johnson, of Woburn, were appointed to lay out the plantation or township. This was done in June following. Within eighteen months, the condition aforesaid was satisfied, and a meeting was held at which provision was made for the support of Rev. John Fiske, the excellent minister of Wenbam, who had agreed to become their minister. Mr. Fiske came to New England in 1637; was a teacher of youth in Salem about three years, and at the gathering of a church in Wenham, 1644, was ordained its pastor. In 1655, he, with a majority of that church, removed to Chelmsford, and continued in the pastoral office there, highly esteemed, till his death, Jan. 14, 1677, aged 76. Some enlargement of the tract was soon found necessary, and the bounds of Chelmsford were eventually extended so as to include the Indian plantation already mentioned, and likewise all Westford, part of Carlisle, and Dracut on the north side of the Merrimack. The Indians in and near Chelmsford were peaceable neighbors to the whites. They were however, few in number. At their plantation in Wamesit there were, in 1674, only about seventy-five souls. This small number soon wasted away. They had little energy or foresight; they did not love to work; they lived mostly by hunting and fishing, and they were disposed to sell their lands to their white neighbors at a low rate. They therefore sold to individuals as they had opportunity, until they had but a moderate quantity left, which was known as the Wamesit Pasture. This small remainder, bounded east by Concord River, as far down as its now stands Lowell--bounded south by a little brook, called Speen's Brook. [Midd. Deeds, xii. 204.] Capt. Josiah Richardson2 died intestate, June 22, 1695, aged 60. His widow Remembrance and his seven surviving children divide his estate among them, March 12, 1695-6. [Midd. Prob. Records, as copied vol. viii. pp. 811-814.] His estate was appraised at œ697. 5. 6. iii JOSIAH, bp. Charlestown 7 November 1635 [ChChR 46]; m. John Bates was one of the purchasers of the "Wamesit Pasture." Jonathan Richardson passed his life in Chelmsford. He died Feb. 21, 1753, leaving a widow Elizabeth, an only son Jonathan, and seven married daughters, four of whom married Colburns. His will is dated Sept. 12, 1750; proved April 9, 1753. He had for those days a comfortable property; it was appraised at œ744. 17. This appraisment was made in "lawful money," resting on a specie basis; the silver wherewith to redeem the "Bills of Credit" having been received from England in September, 1749. It came from the royal treasury to refund the charges incurred by the province of Massachusetts by the capture of Louisburg in 1745. The old depreciated currency was not allowed to circulate after March, 1750. Rev. Thomas Parker, of Dracut, a son-in-law, was the executor. (*) Her name on the County Records is sometimes given as Mary Parris, which is manifestly incorrect. On the Town Records it is also given as Parris. Our ancestors said Parris instead of Parish, and Coburn instead of Colburn, and often in similar cases. The will mentions a grandson, William Adams, a granddaughter, Thankful Butterfield, who has children Benjamin and Thankful. This Thankful Butterfield was the wife of Benjamin Butterfield, and daughter of Elizabeth, the testator's daughter. The children of Capt. Jonathan Richardson were: 109. Jonathan,4 b. Dec. 28, 1693; m. widow Elizabeth Howard, of Newton, May 18, 1724. They probably removed from Chelmsford, as I find no record of any children there. This may be the reason why he was not executor of his father's will. He appears to have died in Pelham in 1753. +110. Elizabeth,4 b. Oct. 19, 1696; m. Edward Colburn. +111. Mary,4 b. MERCY5 RICHARDSON (JOSIAH4, JOSIAH3, EZEKIEL2, THOMAS1) was born 09 January 1688/89 in Chelmsford, MA, and died 25 December 1743 in Dracut, MA. She married MAJOR EPHRAIM HILDRETH 1707 in Chelmsford, MA, son of JAMES HILDRETH and MARGARET WARD. He was born 09 June 1680 in Chelmsford, MA, and died 26 September 1740 in Dracut, MA. Notes for MAJOR EPHRAIM HILDRETH: Ref. Cutter: Ephraim seems to have been a surveyor, and was repeatedly employed by the town. During his early life he was a resident of Chelmsford, and after the part ofthe town in which he lived became Dracut, he became identified with the history of the new town. He was town clerk of Dracut most of the time from 1713 to his death in 1740, and was succeeded by his son Ephraim. It is rather remarkable that the succession continued through four generations. After Ephraim Jr. came William and William Jr. in direct line. Ref. Richardson Memorial: He was an active and influential man, first in Chelmsford, then in Dracut; a major in the militia, and otherwise honored. He (*) It was not granted for any public service, but to compensate Woburn for its alleged smallness of area See Sewall's Hist. of Woburn, pp. 35, 283, et seq. owned and sold land in Pelham, which had formerly, I believe, been in Dracut. He died Sept. 26, 1740. His wife, Mercy, died Dec. 23, 1743, aged 55. Ref. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worchester County vol1: Ephraim seems to have been a surveyor, and was repeatedly employed by the town. During his early life he was a resident of Chelmsford, and after the part of the town in which he lived became Dracut he became identified with the history of the new town. He was town clerk of Dracut most of the time from 1713 to his death in 1740, and was succeeded as clerk by his son Ephraim. It is rather remarkable that the succession continued through four generations. After Ephraim, Jr., came William and William, Jr., in direct line. On March 3, 1800, Licutenant Israel Hildreth was chosen town clerk, making the fifth Hildreth in successive generations to hold the position. Major Hildreth was a commissioner September 3, 1734, from Dracut to other neighboring towns concerning a new county, of which Chelmsford was to be the county seat. He was sergeant in 1712. He was assessor, surveyor of highways, tithingman, town treasurer, trustee and selectman of the town of Dracut at various times. He served on many special committees for the town. He became captain about 1722 and major about 1736. His will was proved in 1740. It mentions his children by name. Children were: 1. Ephraim, Jr., born July 18, 1708; died in Dracut, Massachusetts, August 5, 1769; was very prominent in Dracut, town clerk, selectman, ensign and many other offices; married Mary Clark, of Chelmsford, February 11, 1735. 2. Josiah, born February 14, 1710; died in Dracut, August 7, 1754; married Rebecca Wright, of Dracut, December 20, 1740; was town clerk in 1747. 3. Robert (see forward). 4. Mcrcy or Mary, born January 27, 1715; died in Dracut, Massachusetts, December 10, 1729. 5. Zachariah, born September 26, 1718; died in Dracut, January 10, 1745. WILLIAM RICHARDSON4 (Josiah,3 Josiah,2 Ezekiel1), brother of the preceding, and youngest son of Lieut. Josiah3 and Mercy (Parish) Richardson; born in Chelmsford, Sept. 19, 1701; married, about 1722, ELIZABETH COLBURN, daughter of Daniel and Sarah Colburn, of Dracut. He settled in Pelham, N. H., in 1722, and cultivated a farm there; commenced housekeeping there that year. Pelham was a part of Dracut, but separated from it in 1741, when, by an order of the Privy Council of England, sixteen towns were taken from Massachusetts and annexed to New Hampshire.(*) He was many years captain of a military company. He was also a representative in the General Court of the province. His will is dated April 1, 1776; proved Nov. 7, 1776. He died in the interval. It may be found among the probate records of Rockingham County, at Exeter, N. H. He mentions wife Elizabeth, daughter Molly, wife of Jacob Fletcher, and other children as below. Sons Asa and Daniel, executors. Children of Capt. William Richardson, born in Pelham, but all recorded in Dracut: 235. Elizabeth,5 b. July 27, 1724; m. Capt. Joseph Butterfield. 236. Abner,5 no date given. 237. Mary,5 b. April 18, 1728; m. Capt. Reuben Butterfield. They had Asa (Butterfield) and James (Butterfield). She was living in 1794. 238. William,5 b. January, 1730-1; was an ensign in a company of soldiers under command of Capt. John Hazen, of Haverhill, raised 1758, for the reduction of Ticonderoga and Crown Point. Possibly I mistake the man. 239. Mercy,5 b. June 17, 1736; m. Jacob Fletcher. [In her father's will she is called Molly, an evident mistake in copying, for besides her there was a Mary, the wife of Reuben Butterfield.] (*) The charter under which Massachusetts was settled was granted by Charles I., king of England, to sundry persons, on the 19th of March, 1627-8. It conveyed to these gentlemen, well known as the Massachusetts Company, all that tract of land, that portion of the earth's surface, extending from a point three miles north of the Merrimack River, and every part of it, to a point three miles south of Charles River, and every part of it, and within these limits from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, or Great South Sea. With a view to ascertain the northern limit of this grant, a commission was appointed in 1639 by the government of Massachusetts. The limit was found at the outlet of the Lake Winnipiseogee, where the Merrimack leaves said lake, and where it begins to be the Merrimack. A certain tree three miles north of this was marked as the northern limit of Massachusetts. It is plain as the day-light that this is the true north limit whence the line should run, according to the charter. One of the last acts of that profligate and irreligious prince, Charles II., was to annul the charter, and thus deprive the people of Massachusetts of any title to their lands, which were all held under this instrument. It was a most flagitious and wicked proceeding, though done under the forms of law, in the Chancery Court of England, October, 1685. The rights and liberties of Massachusetts now lay prostrate in the dust. The government of New Hampshire, taking advantage of this unhappy state of things--for the new charter of 1692 did not recognize the old boundaries as established in 1628--after many efforts, continued through a score of years, at length prevailed on the Privy Council of England to issue the order referred to in the text. And thus, by a mere stroke of the pen, Massachusetts was shorn of a large portion of her heritage, of which she had full possession more than a century. Notes for PAUL HILDRETH: Ref. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worchester County vol1: (V.) Paul Hildreth, son of Robert Hildreth (4), was born at Dracut, Massachusetts, October 5, 1746. He was the first white settler at what is now Lewiston, Maine. He was a hunter. He built a log house there in 1770, and was a resident of the village in 1788, and was there when the place was incorporated on February 18, 1795. The route by which he went to Lewiston from Dracut was down the Merrimac river to the sea in a boat. He was towed by a sailing vessel to Harraseket, now Freeport, Maine. Thence he went by portages through the forest to Royalstown, now Durham, where he again put out in his boat and eventually arrived at Twenty Mile falls in safety. He was joined in 1771 by David Pettingill and one of the Dracut Varnums, and one other from New Gloucester. Before he was married he had his cabin on the island in the river above the falls. The light in his cabin, by which he frequently read late at night, was a beacon to guide the Indians who were not afraid of the rapids. On one occasion an Indian girl warned him of a plot to murder him at night. The Indians were jealous of his success in killing otter. Paul shifted the beacon, putting his lantern in his boat, anchored in such a place that if the Indians came and mistook the light for the cabin where it usually shone, they would be swept over the falls and lost. The trick was successful and the Indians, who never discovered the trick, left him alone afterward, believing that he had a charmed life. He married Hannah Merrill. The record of their children here is incomplete. Two of them were: 1. David, born November 9, 1770; died at Gardiner, Maine, July 12, 1848, aged seventy-seven years, eight months. He married April 22, 1792, Esther Moody, daughter, probably, of Samuel and Esther Moody who were early settlers of Industry, Maine. She was born in Waterboro, Maine, May 16, 1770. David Hildreth settled in Industry, Maine, in 1804, on the place now or lately owned by Charles S. Rackliff. He removed later to Gardiner, Maine, where he owned a saw mill. He was captain of the Industry militia company. His wife died in Gardiner, February 15, 1842. They had ten children, the two eldest of which were born in Lewiston. Maine, where Paul Hildreth lived and where David was born. 2. Robert (see forward). v. SUSANNA HILDRETH, b. 05 December 1748, Dracut, MA; d. Unknown. vi.
