There is a sad story connected to Daniel. When his father J. Lewis died, his step-mother Elizabeth sent him away with a napkin with bread and some matches. She told him to go and walk until he found someone to take him in. If he found himself in the woods at night, he could use the matches to build a fire to keep the wild animals away so they wouldn’t attack him.
