      9. James4 Bennett (William M.3, Joshua2, Jehu1) was born December 31, 1819, and died 1891. He married Sarah Grimes December 11, 1842 in Crawford Co., Indiana, daughter of Samuel Grimes and Susan Goble. She was born June 17, 1811, and died 1895.

James Bennett is buried along side his father, William M. Bennett, in Provident Baptist Cemetery, Orange Co., Indiana. He lived all his life in southern Orange County, Indiana, where he raised a family of 6 children, and in addition raised his niece, Rebecca (Beckie) Bennett, who was left orphaned by the death of her father, Sanford, in 1863, and her mother, Catherine Yates Bennett. Beckie was about the age of James' own daughter, and many people thought them to be twins.


During a family argument in the John Brown family, a shot was fired into the home of James Bennett by an unidentified person, who apparently meant to kill him. The shot, however, hit his wife, Sarah (Sally) in the abdomen instead and caused the loss of their unborn child.

      12. Malinda4 Bennett (William M.3, Joshua2, Jehu1) was born August 08, 1826, and died April 11, 1904. She married Abraham Yates 1853 in Home of her half brother, Elisha Bennett at Wilsonville (Now Taylorsville), Kentucky. He was born 1807, and died 1884.

      13. George Washington4 Bennett (William M.3, Joshua2, Jehu1) was born May 17, 1827 in Harrison Co., Indiana. He married Nancy Grimes July 08, 1849 in Crawford Co., Indiana, daughter of Samuel Grimes and Susan Goble. She was born 1834.

Notes for George Washington Bennett:
GEORGE BENNETT was born in Harrison County, Ind., May 17, 1827. In a family of eleven he is the sixth. His parents were William and Rebecca (Pittman) Bennett, who were natives of Kentucky, where they were married. From that State they came to Indiana, locating first in Harrison County, whence they came to Orange County some time prior to 1833. Here they spent the balance of their lives and at their deaths were buried in Providence Cemetery. George Bennett received in his boyhood an ordinary education such as the early schools afforded. He was raised to a farmer's life by his parents, with whom he remained until twenty-two years old. At that age he was married, July 10, 1849, to Miss Nancy Grimes, who has borne him a family of nine children, named James, Dice E., Samuel, Rebecca, Alonzo T., George W., John L., Abraham F. and Isaac L. Farming is the almost exclusive occupation of Mr. Bennett and he owns a farm of 160 acres well improved and cultivated. As members of the Baptist Church he and wife have been prominent for more than twenty years in their community (Greenfield Township). He belongs to the fraternity of Odd Fellows and is a staunch Democrat in politics.
