      3928. John Miles, born November 05, 1654 in Goldaming, Surrey, England; died Abt. March 1696/97 in Beaverdam Manor, St. Mary's Co., Maryland. He was the son of 7856. Nicholas Miles and 7857. Mary Collin. He married 3929. Mary Beckwith 1676 in Calvert Co., Maryland.

Notes for John Miles:
The following was taken from a book entitled "Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Hill and Rebecca Miles" by Sr. Mary Louise Donnelly.

Sometime in 1676, Mary Beckwith married John Miles. When John Miles was around 21 years of age, he came to the Province of Maryland with Edward Brooke.

On July 31, 1686, a warrant was granted to John Miles of Calvert County by Lord Baltimore for 200 acres of land. By 1685 he was in possession of two tracts of land, "Summer Seat" and "Westfield" which had been patented by Baker Brooke in 1678. Why or how he came into possession of these latter tow tracts is not known.

The 200 acre tract was in the center of His Lordship's "Beaverdam Manor." John Miles cleared and cultivated part of this tract and built a substantial home. He referred to this property in his will as "My Right of the plantation."

"Beaverdam Manor" was originally surveyed for the Lord Proprietor and contained 7, 180 acres of land. In 1760 the land was resurveyed and contained 7, 680 acres of which 490 1/2 acres were patented land. The remainder was leasehold land.

In 1695, the area where John Miles lived, formerly called Calvert County, became St. Mary's County and was known as "Resurrection Hundred." John Miles was elected church warden of All Faiths Parish at their Easter meeting in 1696.

By 1697, John Miles held a civic office in St. Mary's County. He is listed with other officials of the county signing a profession of loyalty to King William.

The Miles family resided for a century on the John Miles plantation. As a carpenter, he built a substantial home which might have likewise stood for that period of time. John Miles, his son John Miles, his grandson, John Miles, and his great-grandsons, John Barton Miles and Josias Miles all lived on this plantation called "Maiden Fair" in "Beaverdam Manor." By 1782 the property was in possession of Sarah Drury and the land was now called "Chatham."

John Miles was a carpenter. His descendants after him became a part of the dominant class of Colonial Maryland - the planter. John Miles cleared the trees in the wilderness and built his substantial home. He and his descendants must have spent days plowing, planting, and cultivating the tobacco fields, their livelihood for trading purposes. Food was plentiful in the forest, river, and their gardens. For every other convenience of life such as clothing and manufactured goods, they depended on their sea link with England. As the men on these merchant ships loaded their tobacco crops for the English market, they shared with the Miles family news of the mother land.

The Miles' possessions placed them in circumstances that a later generation might call "deprived." Their furnishings showed most vividly the rude simplicity of their lives. Yet, for their day and age, the Miles were considered among the middle class or upper middle class.

MARY BECKWITH AND JOHN MILES

The Following was taken from a book entitled "Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Hill and Rebecca Miles" by Sr. Mary Louise Donnelly.

Mary Beckwith, th oldest daughter of George Beckwith and Frances Harvey, was born in Calvert Co., Maryland abt 1659. Mary Beckwith grew up on St. Joseph's Manor, the patented land of her grandfather, Nicholas Harvey, and in the Manor House built by her parents. Mary had a delightful childhood surrounded by loving parents, caring servants, and the companionship of an older sister, and three younger siblings.

When Mary Beckwith was about sixteen years of age, her father, George Beckwith, having recieved an inheritence in Yorkshire, England, made arrangements for a trip to his place of birth. About the time of his planned trip and possibly for her sisxteenth birthday, George Beckwith gave Mary a mare and a cow. Within the year after her father's departure for England, Mary's mother died. Then word was received that her father had died in London.

Sometime in 1676, Mary Beckwith married John Miles. When John Miles was around 21 years of age, he came to the Province of Maryland with Edward Brooke.
