Notes for Mary Beckwith: MARY BECKWITH AND JOHN MILES The Following was taken from a book entitled "Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Hill and Rebecca Miles" by Sr. Mary Louise Donnelly. Mary Beckwith, th oldest daughter of George Beckwith and Frances Harvey, was born in Calvert Co., Maryland abt 1659. Mary Beckwith grew up on St. Joseph's Manor, the patented land of her grandfather, Nicholas Harvey, and in the Manor House built by her parents. Mary had a delightful childhood surrounded by loving parents, caring servants, and the companionship of an older sister, and three younger siblings. When Mary Beckwith was about sixteen years of age, her father, George Beckwith, having recieved an inheritence in Yorkshire, England, made arrangements for a trip to his place of birth. About the time of his planned trip and possibly for her sisxteenth birthday, George Beckwith gave Mary a mare and a cow. Within the year after her father's departure for England, Mary's mother died. Then word was received that her father had died in London. Sometime in 1676, Mary Beckwith married John Miles. When John Miles was around 21 years of age, he came to the Province of Maryland with Edward Brooke. |
