Charles Gardner (son of Joseph Gardner and Jane Thompson) was born September 15, 1845 in West Jefferson, Ohio, and died May 07, 1925 in East St. Louis, IL. He married Mary Bolin (Bolden?) on 1871 in DeWitt County, IL, daughter of James Bolden and Mary Jane Green.

 Includes NotesNotes for Charles Gardner:
Charles Gardner was born in West Jefferson, Ohio according to the death information from Kurrus Funeral Home, obtained 10/10/02.This record, states he died Thursday, 5/7/1925, at 2:30 P.M. at his home. His remains were shipped by rail, ICRR (Illinois Central Rail Road) , to Farmer City, Il., leaving Union Station, St. Louis, Mo, at 9:00 A.M. on 5/9/1925. He has no siblings listed on this record, from which the information was obtained from wife (Mary B. Gardner). This record states he resided at 303 S. 4th St. (East. St. Louis, IL), and had been a resident of the area the past 40 years. It also states he never served in the Military of the U.S. THe record states he was a self employed Carpenter. His parents are listed as Joseph Gardner, born in Pennsylvania, and Jane Thompson, born in England. The only surviving decendent is listed as a grandson, Raymond Gardner. His last physician is listed as a Dr. Doyle, who lists the cause of death as 'general hemaphlegia' (?)

I have yet to determine where he is buried in Farmer City, or the Farmer City area. I spoke with a woman from the Maple Grove Cemetery today (10/11/02), who stated she will try to find where he is buried, and will mail any information she finds. Sexton for Maple Grove Cemetery is Dean Scarbrough, (309)928-92211, which is the number where I spoke to the woman today. I also have the # for 'St. Joe' Cemetery, John Yeagle (Sexton), (309) 928-2851; Greenleaf Cemetery (Sexton) Bob Rockman, (309)-928-9768; and for McCord Cemetery, Donna Evans, who may be reached at Smith Johanns Insurance Agency, (309)928-9441. These are the only 4 Cemeteries in Farmer City, (according to the woman today).

She stated there is a William P. Gardner and a Minnie Gardner buried at Maple Grove. According to the Obituary I obtained through Interlibrary Loan, a W.P. Gardner who was Charles' Uncle, served as a Pallbearer. Two other Uncles serving as Pallbearers are named in this Obituary; J. F. Gardner, from Bloomington, IL, and Joseph Gardner, from Weldon. (Since one is named 'Joseph', the same as Charles' father, and is named as an Uncle, this causes me to believe Charles must have had at least one brother.)
The Obituary also states Charles and Mary had two daughters who preceded (him) in death. One was my Great Grandmother, Lucy, (mother of my Grandfather, Raymond), and the other may be Sadie Gardner. This I beleieve because the 1896 East. St. Louis City Directory lists Charles, Lucy, and Sadie as all living at 912 Missouri Av. , (but Mary Gardner is listed as living at 917 Missouri Av.)Lucy and Sadie Gardner are listed as 'dressmakers' in 1896. So far, no marriage record can be located for Lucy Gardner and Theodore Haps, (the father of Raymond, my Grandfather, who was born 8/30/ 1893).
The next City Directory I have seen so far, is the 1897-1898 City Directory, and in it, Lucy is missing, Sadie is at 8th and Walnut, as is Charles, but this time, Mary is not listed at all. Since Lucy reportedly died at an early age, this leads me to believe she was definitely living in 1896, but, died shortly thereafter since she is missing in the 1897-1898 Directory.
I am hoping if I can locate the grave of Charles, possibly Lucy may be buried wherever he is, if they had a family plot. Again, as with the marriage record, there so far has been no information on Lucy's death located thus far, nor any information on the death of Sadie Gardner (if she was still a 'Gardner' when she died).
