John Wesley Gardner (son of Joseph Gardner and Jane Thompson) was born April 12, 1837 in Madison County, Ohio, and died August 24, 1914. He married (1) Sarah Jane Wilson on December 20, 1857 in Wabash, Indiana. He married (2) Elizabeth H. Cain on March 22, 1882.

Wedding Anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. John W. Garnder celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last Friday, March 222, with a gathering of friends and relatives. Those present were D.F. Cain, brother of Mrs. Gardner, and daughter Rachel. pf Solomon; Dr. and Mrs. Tyler, of Clinton;
Miss May Deanm of Stanford, and unt Mary Weedman, Mrs. R.D. Weedman, Mrs. T. M. Lewis, Mrs. Frank Gardner and E.T. Gardner. Several nice presents were received by Mr. and Mrs. Gardner. An excelent three-coourse dinner was served at noon and the entire day was spent very pleasantly.

John W. Gardner Dead. His Ilness ended in Dissolution Early Monday Morning

Monday morning, August 24, at 3:30 o'clock death terminated the illness with which John W. Gardner had been suffering for three weeks. He passed away at his home in the north part of this city surrounded by his children and thus ended the long life of one who had been a good husband and father, honorable in his dealings with all men, patient and courageous in affliction and beloved by the entire community.
"Uncle John" as he was called in affection and kindness by many, devoted his later years to the training and handling of horses, and during the final years of the Farmer City fair his "Osage" breeding establishment near the fair grounds was an institution of some importance. With the disbandment of the fair and the closing of the track he turned from road horses to draft stock, but continued to break and train colts for their owners. It was while engaged in the latter work a few years ago that he receivbed a severe injury and broken bones and after his partial recovery his health was never good again. A month ago he became ill with liver and kidney tro[u]ble and spent the last three weeks in bed.
The funeral was conducted in the M. E. church on Wednesday fore-noon by pastor, Rev. Thos. H. Tull. The memebers of Mt. Pleasant lodge I.O.O.F., to which deceased belonged many years, attended in a body and conducted their burial service at the frave in Maple Grove cemetery.
John Wesley Gardner, son of Joseph and Jane Gardner, was born in Madison couonty, Ohio, April 12, 1837; died August 24, 1914, aged 77 years, 4 months, 12 days. He married Sarah Jane Wilson at Wabash, Ind., December 20, 1857. She died March 19, 1878, at Wabash, where she is buried. The were blessed with six children--James Wilson, Louis Richard, Elizabeth Jane, Parker Jacob, William Harrison and Della May, who are still living. Libbie, as she was called in the home circle, died some years ago. Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Gardner moved to Illinois and for a few years lived in Clinton and on a farm notrh of that city, returning then to Wabash. There Mr. Gardner took an active part in the city's affairs, serving as alderman several terms.
Early in 1882 he moved to DeWitt county, Illinois, a second time and married Miss Elizabeth H. Cain on March 22 of that year. Dhe died March 16, 1908, at Farmer City. No Children were born to this marriage.
He leaves two brothers--Edward T. of this city and Charles of East St. Louis; five children, seven grand-children and one great-grandchild.
