Notes for A
NDREW JACKSON SHRADER:
Andrew Jackson Shrader came to Platsmouth, Nebraska, as a boy from Richmond, Virginia. He and a brother, George, left their folks in Richmond, Virginia. Their father, Jim Shrader, fought in the War between the States and was wounded. Jack, then 18, took his father's place. After coming to Nebraska, Jack married, and one son was born in Nebrasks. Later, two more brothers, Joe and Zack, come to Nebraska. Jack was the only one who left Nebraska. The others all stayed and raised families at Platsmouth,Nebraska. Later, Jack went to Texas.

Andrew Jackson Shrader, known as "Uncle Jack", came to Old Healton in 1886 and camped two miles northwest at the present town of Healton. He came from Alvord, Texas in a covered wagon bringing his cattle and horses and crossing the Red River by ferry.

It was a hard trip, as they were worried about certain uncivilized Indians who were still on wild skirmishes. The Indians had killed a family near Alvord before they left Texas. He and his wife, Melissa, had five children at the time. They lived various places, share cropping and raising cattle, before settling the old home place two miles north of Healdton. This place had 70 acres of good cotton land. He built a big white bungalow house. There were, in those days, lots of outside land where he could run his cattle.

Another son was born after moving to Healton, but in 1891, his wife Melissa died and was buried at Mount Olive Cemetery, Healton, Carter Co., Oklahoma. He then married Belle Murtishaw, about 1900, and they had three sons. He finally settled in Healdton, Indian Teritory, where he lived until his death in 1921.
