Notes for R
OBERT LEE SHRADER:
Robert Lee "Bob" Shrader was one of four sons and one daughter born to Andrew Jackson and Melissa Shrader. He was born December 20, 1879 in Alvord, Wise County, Texas. In 1886, his father heard of the fertile and near free land in Indian Territory. The family loaded up their belongings on a covered wagon and headed north for a new home. They camped overnight on Red River. To a seven year old, hearing Indians at night was frightful. The family was not harmed, however, some families were wiped out by the Indians. The family stopped the wagon in Indian Territory in May of 1886. His father leased 100 acres two miles north of Old Healdton. It took the whole family (sons George, Clay, Bob and Charlie and one daughter, Belle) to farm the land. While living in the wagon and camping out, they started building a one-room log cabin. Eventually, they added on another room. In 1889, Melissa Shrader died of pneumonia. About 1900, his father "Jack" Shrader married Belle Murtishaw. His father and stepmother, Belle, then bought fifty acres joining the family land. They built a fine new home on the land.

At age nineteen, Robert Lee Shrader, married Cassie Welch, the daughter of another pioneer family. They moved to a rented farm near Rock Springs School, four miles north of Healton. They had six boys and four girls. In the winter of 1919, Cassie took pneumonia and died, leaving nine children. The youngest was just a few months old. The older girls looked after the younger children, while the boys helped with the farming. A few months later, Holden, a son, died from an unknown infection.

On the next farm lived the Eli Jasper Hill family who had moved in from Spanish Fort, Texas. The Hills had two daughters and five sons.

One fall day as Margaret (one of Eli Jasper Hill's daughters) was picking cotton, Bob walked over and asked her to the dance being held at his brother George's house. She agreed, and just three months later, November, 1919, she became his wife and mother of nine. Margaret was only 15 years old at this time. They were married in a buggy between Healdton and Rock Springs, in front of a one-room school four miles north of Healdton. At this time the family moved about every two or three years as tenant farmers, never moving more than five miles from Healdton. Margaret and Bob had five girls and two boys. Roberts Jr., died at age one of pneumonia. Everyone in the family worked in the fields raising cotton, corn feed and peanuts.

During the 1930's when the great depression hit our country, the farmer, too, suffered. A cow would do well to bring $5.00. When Franklin Roosevelt became President, Bob went to work on the W.P.A. making $35.00 a month. This would help to put food on the table. There was also a drought at this time and nothing was raised on the farm. Many people loaded up and moved on.

In the 1940's during World War II. three sons served in the U.S. Army. Son, Freeman, was in Germany and England for four years. Son, Clay, was in North Africa and Italy for three years. Son, Sherman served in the States.

In 1950 Bob left the farm for good, moving to Healdton on Kewanee Street. In 1975, at age 96, he died in Healdton, the place he loved so well.

Margaret who later married Lloyd Powell, recalled sewing on a treadle sewing machine and washing clothes on a rub-board for extra money to help with the family needs. She lived in Healdton at 114 South 7th Street until her dead.

They lived through two World wars and the Great Depression.
