Notes for A
SA PIPER:
Asa Piper was born March 7, 1757, in Acton; a Congregational clergyman; married 1st, Mary Cutts, born in Portsmouth, N.H., in 1766; died Jan 4, 1802, in Wakefield, N.H.; 2nd, Sarah Little, born in Kennebunk, Me., in 1765; died Oct. 15, 1827, in Wakefield, N.H. He graduated at Harvard College in 1778, studied divinity, and was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church in Wakefield, N.H., Sept. 22, 1785. He continued in that office for nearly fifty years, or until his death, having had a colleague only the last seven years of that time. He was a man of much force of character and deep piety. His judgement was sound, and his opinions on the great questions of his day, correct. He was much beloved by the members of his church and society, and by his townsmen generally. Rev. Albert H. Thompson, in his Address on the "One Hundredth Anniversary of the Organization of First Church, and Ordination of the First Settled Town Minister of Wakefield, N.H., says of him: "He was of staunch English stock, a good scholar, and a priest of the Most High God. He was the first pastor of this church, and stands the head of the line in time and talent." He was about six feet in height and of fine physical development. He died May 17, 1835, in Wakefield, N.H. The time of his birth, as given by himself when he entered Harvard College, is March 17, 1757. The date March 7, given above, which is taken from the town records of Acton, Mass., is probably Old Style and he added ten days for New Style, making it March 17, 1757.
A genealogical record of the ancestors, and brothers and sisters of Rev. Asa Piper, of Wakefield, N.H., written by himself in 1833, two years before his death.
"The great-grandfather emigrated from England during the Revolution in the days of Charles the First. Which side he espoused in the controversy, whether for the King or the Commonwealth, is now unknown. He undoubtedly espoused the side of the Commonwealth. All his descendants in this country, of whom I have had any knowledge, have been strongly in favor of a Republic, and have had no sympathy with a Monarchy. He was probably one of those who, foreseeing the restoration of Charles the Second, emigrated to this country to enjoy greater liberty than could be had in England. He came from Dartmouth, in the south-west of England and settled in Ipswich, Mass. He had three or four sons. My grandfather , I believe, bore the name of Jonathan; he removed to Concord. His brothers' names were Nathaniel, Samuel, and Thomas, if I am not mistaken. Two of these went to Stratham; the other, I believe, died young. I think there was one daughter if not more. She married a Greenleaf. My grandfather had the following children: Jonathan, Nathaniel, John, Hosiah, and Joseph; and two daughters, one of whom married a Pierce; the other a Gould. Josiah, my father settled early in Acton, Mass., and left three sons and three daughters; another daughter died at an early age. Joseph also settled in Acton and had a large family. These spread in various directions, mostly in New Hampshire. My oldest brother was named Josiah, the other Samuel; my oldest sister Sarah, the next Mary, the youngest Elizabeth, all older than myself.
