He practiced medicine in Woburn, Mass., several years, and also in Chicago, Ill. He is an author and published, in 1852, "Operative Surgery," 8vo., 378 pages, illustrated with about two thousand engravings, made by himself; in 1855, an edition of "Maclice's Surgical Anatomy," 4to., illustrated with plates of his own engraving; in 1857, "The Trees of America," with illustrations; and has also contributed articles to the "New Orleans Medical Journal" and other scientific publications. He has given much attention to the study of microscopy, and is an expert in that science, being often called to make microscopic examinations in cases in courts of justice and elsewhere, on which he has made many reports. He has several thousand drawings of various objects, made under the microscope and admirably executed, which have not yet been bound in book form, and issued to the public. A writer in the "North American Review," in a notice of his works, says: "He has the eye of an artist, the hand of a draftsman, and the spirit of an enthusiast." He resides in Washington D.C. Stephen Howard (6) Piper, a successful merchant of Exeter, N.H., born August, 1814, in Stratham, is a descendant of the same ancestors as Richard Upton(6). being his brother.
