Notes for A
SA PIPER:
From the research of Robert H. Maybrier:
Asa Piper graduated from Harvard College in 1778. Enlisted 5 June 1789 in MA Continental army (12th MA Reginemt). Disscharged November 1781. He did not go home, but went directly to Virginia, where he became a school teacher. Later he went to Kentucky and married Margaret Ficklin on 12 June 1792 in Woodford County, Kentucky. He received a land grant from Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor, in Logan County. Martin D. Hardin was Secretary of State at this time. About 1825, he moved to an Illinois farm in what became Crawford County. He received a pension for his service in the Rev. War which he applied for in 1832. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Old Kitchell Cemetery on West Harrison St. in Palestine, Crawford County, Illinois.

From the Piper research of Jennefer Burke of Illinois.
She was researching Asa over at the Crawford County Courthouse a couple years ago and found paperwork where he and one of his sons was brought up on assault charges. I'm sure you know that he lived for many years in Kentucky, no doubt with a gun behind the door to protect himself and his family from all kinds of dangers. Well it seens that shortly after moving to Crawford County to live with his son, he discovered a family who had built a house on what he wholeheartedly believed was land that was owned by Edward. He and his other son, I believe it was Beverly, went to this family's door and accused them of being "squaters" and ordered them off the property. When they didn't comply, Asa and son proceeded to tear hes house down. I'm sure it wasn't much more than a cabin so it probably didn't take much. Anyway the guy filed charges and Asa and Beverly were arrested. Edward posted bond and had to appear on behalf of his father and brother. Asa was in his 70's by then. The land was apparently not Edward's.

Notes for E
DWARD CUTTS PIPER:
Edward Piper was born Dec. 30, 1789, in Wakefield; a farmer and deacon of the Congregational Church of Wakefield; for nearly half a century. He entered Harvard College in Sept. ,1809, one year in advance and dissolved his connection with it at the end of his junior year on account of ill health, which obliged him to abandon his intention of pursuing a professional life study, and to adopt a business which required labor in the open air. Rev. Albert H. Thompson in his Anniversary Address, makes the following quotation in regard to him; "He was the good old deacon, permitted for more than half a century to embellish, in his ancestral home, a hard-working farmer's life with the culture of a Christian gentleman. He had a apostolic beauty of character, and led a blameless life." He married Sarah Swasey (maiden name Sarah Jones), May 18, 1828, born March 18, 1790, in Portsmouth, N.H.; died Jan.13, 1866, in Wakefield. He died February. 27, 1881, at his home in Wakefield.
