Notes for ALPHEUS FELCH:
      Alpheus Felch, born September 28, 1804, in Limerick, Me.; graduated at Bowdoin College in 1827, entered immediately upon the study of law, and was admitted to the bar at Bangor, Me., in 1830. He first began to practice in Holton, Me., where he remained three years from 1830 to 1833. His health having become impaired by the severity of the climate, and desiring a more promising locality for business, he removed to Monroe, Michigan, where he resided ten years, or till 1843, and then settled at Ann Arbor, in the same State, where he has continued to practice his profession to the present time. He has held various offices of trust and honor; has been representative in the Legislature of Michigan, Bank Commissioner, Commissioner of California Land Claims, Tappan Professor of Law and President of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan, Judge of the Supreme Court and Governor of Michigan, and United States Senator from 1847 to 1853. He discharged all these offices with much ability and honor to himself and his State. In 1877 Bowdoin College conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. He married Lucretia Williams Lawrence September 14, 1837, an estimable lady, daughter of Judge Wolcott and Caroline (Stebins) Lawrence .born December 31, 1817, in Monroe, Mich. she died July 30, 1882, in Ann Arbor. He resides in Ann Arbor.
      The date of his birth has sometimes appeared in print as being Sept. 28, 1806, but the one here given is correct, having been furnished me by himself.
