Notes for S
ARAH MOFFATT:
Sarah Moffatt, born November 21, 1804, in Newburgh, Me. After the death of her mother, when she was eighteen years of age and went to provide for herself in Cincinnati, Ohio. After remaining there about a year she married Matthew Brown, December 25, 1823, born in Keighley, Yorkshire, England, October 17, 1806. He emigrated to this country with his father when only 6 years old and was educated here. When twelve years of age he began to learn the trade of cabinet-maker, serving five years, and became a first-class workman. When General Lafayette visited this country, in 1824, he was selected by the reception committee of Cincinnati to make an elegant chair for him to sit in. The chair was of extraordinary workmanship and in now carefully preserved with other interesting relics of the city. He followed the business of cabinet-making in Cincinnati about thirteen years and then entered into trade, and by strict integrity and close attention to business became a successful merchant. In the meantime, with much sagacity, he purchased real estate in the city, which rose largely on his hands and he became quite wealthy. After diligent labor in trade for twenty years or more, he retired from business in 1854, retaining a portion of his real estate in the city and purchased a country seat of ten acres at Delhi about four and a half miles from Cincinnati where he lived as a gentleman farmer and capitalist with his family to which he was much attached, in quiet leisure until his death, which occurred suddenly May 30, 1868, at Delhi. In politics he was a Republican and took a deep interest in the success of the Union Army in the War of the Rebellion. His wife died May 24, 1886, in Cincinnati, to which she and her surviving children removed after the death of her husband. She was an active woman, of medium size with dark hair and black eyes, of amiable disposition, and highly respected.
She told her children that she was born in "No. 2, Massachusetts." Maine was a part of Mass. till 1820. Newburgh, before its incorporation in 1819, was called Plantation No. 2, and was then a part of Mass. She was, therefore, correct in saying that she was born in "No. 2, Massachusetts." All children were born in Cincinnati except Clarissa, who was born near Peoria, Illinois. Notes taken from history done by Horace Piper.
