This name is spelled by some More, and by others Moore, John and Eben More, brothers, the former of whom settled in Parsonsfield in 1774, and the latter, the same year, in Newfield near by, spelled their names More. The younger sons of John More changed their names to Moore, and now nearly all the descendants of John and Eben spell their names Moore. Ira More has adhered to the spelling of his grandfather, John More. It is difficult to tell which is the original spelling. Miss Hannah More, the distinguished authoress and Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England, spelled their names More. Thomas Moore, the poet, and General Sir John Moore, the hero of Corumma spelled theirs Moore.
