He is a large land-holder, and carries on farming extensively, owning two thousand and sixty-five acres of land. His farm at home, which he cultivates, contains three hundred and twenty acres of this, and the remainder is rented to tenants. It is located in different townships, some in Berlin, and some in Hall and Shelby. The land being valuable affords a large income from the rents, and is constantly increasing in value. He had rendered very important assistance in collecting genealogies for this book (1889). He resides in Malden, Illinois. Notes taken from history done by Horace Piper.
      WILL OF H. H. PIPER
Filed for probate in court.
Lands to the Value of $648,000 are disposed of, the rest to be held in trust ten years.
The will of the late Hiram H. Piper was filed for probate in the county court yesterday afternoon. During the morning the nine children of Mr. Piper gathered at the law office of Jay L. Spaulding to hear the reading of the will. Six automobiles owned by the children brought the various members to Princeton. The reading of its provisions and the procedure that followed required about two hours. By the will land valued at $648,000 was divided among the nine children. The remainder of the lands, together with the loans, and stocks according to the terms of the will are to remain in trust for a period of ten years upon the expiration of which time another division will be made. For the present each child is given 480 acres of choice farming lands. This is the first will of a millionaire of Bureau county to be probated here.
            HOW WILL WAS WRITTEN
The will was written August 11, 1905, at which time Mr. Piper was ill and an operation was deemed necessary. It was feared he might not recover and upon his request Attorneys George S. Skinner and J.L. Spaulding, both of Princeton were summoned to the house. They took with them the late Marjorie Vaughan, stenographer of Mr. Spaulding, who transferred the document to typewriting. Mr. Piper was in bed but showed remarkable memory concerning the location and description of his lands. To the attorneys he gave the legal description to sixty-three different tracts of land, a thing which it is said, not one man in a thousand would be able to do. His sons June H. Piper and Ansel D. Piper, were named as the executors. The witnesses to the will are George S. Skinner. Miss Marjorie Vaugan and J. L. Spaulding. For several years before his death Mr. Piper talked of the matter of making a will and of holding all of his lands until his death. He said he preferred that way and did not approve of deeding lands away before death in order to avoid paying the state inheritance tax. Mr. Piper, during his life mentioned last week, always maintained a deep sense of honor and when it came to the writing of his will he said he wanted his estate to pay the state all it was owing by reason of the inheritance law. His estate will pay the largest inheritance tax every collected in Burear county. The estate is estimated to be worth more than $1,029,000 but the exact figures will not be know until the inventory is taken. About half of the estate is divided equally among the children by the will.
