THELYN MARIAN BAILEY:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 25, Ed. 1, Tree #0123, Date of Import: Sep 9, 1999]

Ethel grew up in Nashua. She had an encyclopedic memory of the plants, trees & flowers of New England. She loved to sight see. A ride in the country or a trip to the shore to view storm surf were among her favorite pastimes. She loved animals &, unless chased off by Buster or other Bailllie pets, area strays would show up at our back door for a handout. Her memory was excellent in most areas & extended to her old age. She had stories of a Bailey Pilgrim connection to Governor Bradford & Myles Standish & the presence of Indian blood in our veinns on the Bailey side. This family history would be infinitely more interesting had it been started during the time when Ethelyn was still lucid &had we thought to draw her out on family history. Ethel was a wonderful cook & baker. Traditional beans & franks for Saturday were something we all loved. Holiday meals especially were sumptuous. She loved to see a variety of color & content in her meals. Strokes in her mid 90s took her communications skills &she died as a result of a broken hip and ensuing complications.

RANK ALBERT BAILEY:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 25, Ed. 1, Tree #0123, Date of Import: Sep 9, 1999]

Frank Albert Baillie was an under age 2nd generation Scots farm boy from Iowa who ran away from home to enlist in the Navy. His was a vain attempt to be a member of Teddy Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet" around the world cruise. He would serve in the Navy from 1908 to 1912, attaining the rank of Quartermaster 3rd Class while serving in battleships MONTANA & MISSOURI. His Missouri Division Officer served on the ill-fated USS MAINE whose sinking led to the Spanish American war. A New England blizzard during a Nashua visit with his bride-to-be, Ethelyn, caused him to miss ship's movement, to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (known as "Gitmo"). Frank would be reduced in rank to Seaman 1st Class for his pecadillo. Both of their sons would appear at "Gitmo" at much later dates. He was put aboard USS CYCLOPS for transportation to Cuba. In 1918 CYCLOPS would disappear in what is now known as the Bermuda Triangle. Frank & Ethel had been married for about 2 years when he was discharged from the Navy. The young couple lived in Nashua briefly & their first child, Isabel, after both grandmothers, had died in infancy. Happily, Dorothy, was born in Nashua on 14 Oct 1913. The young family moved to Round Pond on the coast of Maine where Madelyn Louise made it a foursome. On 14 May of 1635 John Bayley of another Bailey branch arrived at Pemaquid Point, just a few miles away, in the ship ANGEL GABRIEL. On the following day a hurricane force storm sunk the ship, killed a number of people & caused widespread destruction in what came to be known as the "Great Storm of 1635". Ethel's Bailey ancestors had arrived in the New World at about the same time. Richard Bailey in the BEVIS in MA in 1635 &d his brother James, Ethelyn's direct line ancestor, about 1640. Both men settled in Rowley, MA. Only a few miles south of Round Pond lies Bailey's Island where Frank Jr. & wife Shirley bought steamer clams during his Navy tour with Fleet Air Wing Three at NAS Brunswick, ME. Bailey's Island was named for Deacon Timothy Bailey from Hanover, MA (in the Thomas of Weymouth line who bought the island in 1742. Ethel was not fond of living in the "sticks" of Round Pond, Maine & so the family moved to Taunton, MA at the suggestion of Ethel's brother Ed who lived there on Mt Vernon St with his wife Maude & stepson Harold from Maude's first marriage. Myrtle Eleanor ("Marge") & Frank Albert, known as "Frankie" were born in Taunton & it was here that the farmer-sailor became a railroad man. Frank worked for the New York, New Haven & Hartford RR for most of his adult years as a carman, a fireman & finally as an engineer. The family moved to nearby Brockton when "Frankie" was still an infant. The Ballie-Johnson-Monahan-Blais children loved to catch rides on Grandpa's engine in later years. A collision with a car trying to outrun Frank's train at an East Bridgewater, MA RR crossing damaged his health, brought on his retirement & may have led to his untimely death in 1960. The sale of the family home at 1167 Montello Street, Campello section of Brockton led Ethel to live in Madelyn & Billy Blais' new home at 36 11th Ave in Brockton. Failing health & the need for medical attention forced a move to the ---------- Nursing Home where Ethel would finally pass away on February 18th 1990.
