Obituary from the Morning Sun, Aug. 8, 1962
ARTIST DIES IN TUCSON AT AGE 63
Richard Currier Had Shown Woks Abroad
Richard Currier, prominent American artist and pioneer movie producer, died yesterday morning at his home on North La Jolla Ave. He was 63 and had lived in Tucson for 17 years.
His works were frequently exhibited in Paris and Rome. Many of them were featured on the covers of Town & Country magazine.
In the early 1920's, Mr. Currier produced some of the first films for RKO, in both Hollywood and New York.
A great-grandson of Nathaniel Currier, the famed American lithographer, he attended the Slade School in London and studied under A. H. Munnings. Mr. Currier was a graduate of Harvard, class of 1922, and a veteran of World War I.
His son, Stephen R., of New York City, is the husband of Audrey Bruce, heiress to the fortune of financier Andrew Mellon, who served as secretary of the treasury under Calvin Coolidge. Her father is a former ambassador to France.
Other survivor's are Mr. Currier's wife, Elizabeth, of Tucson; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Steinhert, of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. Kenneth Lindsey, of London; and three grandchildren.
The Currier home here housed many valuable pieces of art, including 35 Italian figurines from the 16th Century.
Private memorial services will be held at the home Saturday. The body has been cremated and sent to Petersborough, N.H.
Brings Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

from The Autobiography of Sir Alfred Munnings

"This brings me to the painting of the pictures and to Windsor, where my quarters were in an old hotel near the bridge, which had been built or lived in by Sir Christopher Wren. With me was an American friend from Boston, named Dick Currier, an amateur artist who had stayed with Mr. Prince near Boston whilst I was painting in America years before. When I was doing the Ascot pictures, Currier was doing paintings of the colossal bronze equestrian statue of George III, commonly known as "The Copper Horse". One of his canvases was a view of the "copper horse" under a starry sky. I will not relate how we went there on many nights after drinking bottles of Bern Castle Doctor of a certain year.
"How can a man paint the stars?" said Currier, lying on his back on the grass and gazing at the Plough and Orion's Belt.
      "God knows!" was my reply.
The huge, shadowy mass of horse and rider against the starlit sky was beyond our conception . . . " (pp.270-271)
