Notes for E
LSIE MAY COMBS:
Elsie Combs Wilson was a woman of the soil, as many of the people of her generation were. Even in her later years when arthritis and "rhuematis" bothered her knees, she continued to tend her flower garden. In colder months when the weather prevented outdoor work, she continued to fuss over transplanted geraniums and other flowers that had grown in her garden. (To this day, I am still amazed at how she managed to get ONE flower to live so many years!!) When not tending her plants or cooking, she loved to do fine needle work. And as a youngster, I can remember grandma Elsie and various neighbor ladies setting up a quilting frame in the living room. They would make handsome homemade quilts for the families involved, and if memory serves me correctly, donated others for various community fund raising affairs.

Elsie belonged to various organizations and community clubs in the Marathon area. Even into her 90's, she still enjoyed a good game of pinochle and when playing partners were not available in the evening, she would sit at the kitchen table and play solitaire. And heaven forbid anyone accuse her of cheating at that!!!!! Elsie's health forced a move to a nursing home in nearby Albert City, Iowa, where she spent the remainder of her days. Her great pride and joy was when her grandchildren and great grandchildren would visit her. Even when her strength no longer enabled her to pick up a baby, she still insisted that new babies in the family be placed in her lap. She had a way to quiet fussy babies, even if it meant fixing one of her "toddies". ("Medicinal" bourbon mixed with sugar or white syrup.) Her "old remedies" somehow managed to "cure" minor fevers or infections.

Elsie died in the nursing home on January 23, 1983, when an aorta near her heart burst. With her death, a long, hard journey in life had ended.

Notes for A
RTHUR LESLIE WILSON:
Arthur Leslie Wilson was born a farmer's son and took that skill and knowledge, along with a new bride, to Marathon, Iowa, in early 1906. Less than 3 months after marrying Elsie Combs, they made the "long" move to Iowa....continuing a tradition of his forebears....moving west into the heartland of the country. The farming implements and household goods were loaded onto a train and moved to northwest Iowa from his father's farm near Bradford, Illinois.

It was only recently that I learned of my grandfather's ability to play the piano (by ear), and to entertain young relatives in his home with his "whistling". He had, quite obviously, picked up his fathers musical talents, as John Bruce Wilson was widely sought for his "fiddle playing".

Arthur was not only a highly respected farmer in the Marathon community, he was a community leader as well. He was a member of the Methodist Church, bank board of the First National Bank of Marathon, and the Marathon Community School Board. His untimely death on January 14th, 1927, came as a shock to his family and the community at large. He left a young widow and five children to make the way in the world. His farm land continued in the family until his wife Elsie died in early 1983. Arthur's forward looking will had ensured his children and widow would benefit from his efforts.

  Notes for BLANCHE MAY WILSON:
Blanche suffered a major stroke and died from the complications of the attack before any of the family could reach the hospital in Minnesota. She and Jack never had any children.

  Notes for JOHN FRED THOMPSON:
After serving in WWI and surviving German gas attacks, Jack returned home and served as a police officer for a number of years. Retiring from the police department, he established his own security business. It was while he was making his early morning rounds checking on businesses that subscribed to his service that Jack suffered a fatal heart attack. Although it was known to him that his heart was not good, a link back to his army service and the gas attacks was never established.

1047. v.   VIVIAN RUTH WILSON, b. Private.
