TRAPS DABLER HARDWARE EMPLOYEE IN VEHICLE'S CAB

      Alvin Piper, 32, Manlius, employee of Dabler's Hardware, Manlius and the father of seven children 9 years and younger, died Wednesday morning of crushing injuries when he was trapped in his pickup truck after a two-truck collision about 9:30 A.M. at a rural intersection three miles west of Manlius.
      Driver of the other vehicle, a gravel truck, was Mel Taets, Sheffield, Gold township highway commissioner.
      Piper, in the Dabler's pickup truck was going west on a gravel road, and Taets was traveling north on an intersecting gravel road. Tall corn in a field between the two vehicles obscured vision. Taets said he had looked for dust flying above the corn.
      After the trucks collided, the pickup driven by Dabler crashed into the trunk of a large tree and the gravel truck went off the road beside the pickup and near the tree. Taets said he ran to the pickup and attempted to free Piper, who was still alive at that time. Piper was so tightly held between the seat, steering column and dashboard that it was impossible to free him for several minutes. The Manlius fire department was called to the scene to assist in removing the body. A physician had pronounced Piper dead and requested removal of the body.
      Jerry Burba, Manlius, was first to arrive at the scene, and he called for police and ambulance. State Troopers Gordon Cleland and Wayne Goforth investigated. The intersecting roads are routes 20 and 15.
      Inquest has been set at 10 A.M. today in the Howard Johnson funeral home, Manlius. Funeral arrangements will be announced at the Howard Johnson funeral home.
      Mr. Piper is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Piper, route 2, Princeton, and had been employed at Manlius for about 10 years. His wife is the former Verla Lubbs, New Bedford.
      In addition to his wife and parents, he leaves seven children, Ray 9, Donna, 8, Milton, 7, Diane, 6, Kay Elaine, 5, Terry, almost 3, Edwin, almost 1, and three sisters, Mrs. Homer (Eunice) Brandenburg, and two sisters at home, Evelyn and Alice.
